poured a very thick dark (solid black) pour with a finger of tan head. excellent retention with patchy lacing. smells of roasted grains, sweet lactose sugar, cocoa, tobacco, roasted pecans. taste is subtle .. very sweet with a roasted finish. tastes of sugar coated pecans (like the ice cream topping ones), burnt caramel, roasted grains, ashtray (very earthy bitterness), dark chocolate. medium body (strange, since it looked to pour extremely thick) with a nice amount of carbonation makes it easy to drink and the subtle mix of bitter-sweet makes it very refreshing.
if i had regular access to this, i'd make it my go to stout, especially for the price tag. this is my 2nd beer from this brewery, and i have to say i was already sold on the first (size 7 ipa).. but this one just confirmed their consistency to pull out two completely different styles of beer so damn good.

Steel Toe Dissent Dark Ale, 7% ABV, Steel Toe Brewing, St. Louis Park, Minnesota.

Solid black color, short, cocoa-tinged head of foam.

Roasty-toasty aromatics, right from the start, nicely bittered. Bittersweet espresso, with hints of chocolate.

Taste: more of that roasted malt on the tongue, dark, rich, deep and tasty. Mmmm, all the pleasures of an oatmeal stout, all the smoothness and the depth, the richness and the satisfaction, all here. Full-bodied, long-lasting finish. Just right.

More can I say? It's nailed, like the others.

Appearance: Black, good head, sticky lacing.

Smell: Big roasted grain aroma.

Taste: Nicely balanced chocolate, roasted grain, and mild sweetness. Very tasty.

Mouthfeel: Moderate but not too heavy.

Overall: Another Steel Toe brew that I tried on tap, loved, and so bought a bottle to review. Very tasty stuff, hits a nice balance between sweetness and dark chocolate bitterness along with having a nice feel to it. Good stuff.

at republic uptown served in a pint glass with a thin finger of dark tan frothy head that leaves little lacing and breaks down rather rapidly. Brownish black in color. Aromas of rich dark chocolatey malt. Notes of rich toasted sugar as well. Flavor is rich dark toasted malt with characteristics of heavily roasted coffee. End note is a tad bitter from the dark malts. Medium bodied with a carbonation level a bit high that seems to bring out the lingering almost astringent aftertaste from the roasted malts. Overall a decent beer that could benefit from a little less in your face dark malt and better balance.
