Helltown Brewing
"Perverse Stout"

LOOK: Black stout ish looking brew. Off white head forms and dissipates quickly.
SMELL: Potent nose with roasted and milk chocolate aromas.
TASTE: Roasted malt, strong coffee and bitter, unsweetened chocolate. Minor hops presence in the background adding to the bitterness with a small citrus note, but providing little more than that and some acidity to the mix.
FEEL: Full bodied, all things smooth, well carbonated. Lingering coffee like finish.
OVERALL: As I expected, a fantastic stout. More please! Helltown kicks ass!

A fairly thick stout with powder-y cocoa tones showing more than anything else. Not as cohesive or as thick as I was expecting. It's consistent, sure. Feel is pretty smooth. Minimal nip of carbonation. Pretty decent. Somewhat thick flavor on things, but not overly interesting. A nice production, but I prefer and like Helltown's other productions much better.

I'll call it black. Not much room for head to form after the pour. Still had a cap. Had. A ring lies here now.

Smells of coffee and molasses with a smooth grain roast and note of Oreo creme. Mellow and somewhat sweet.

Taste is mostly black coffee notes with hints of cocoa and black strap. Roast is dark, but not heavy. Bitterness is average, if not a tad light. Maltiness pouring through with tempered grain and light syrup notes. Has a late tang in the finish.

Drinks easy. Low on carbonation. Some stick. Ok smoothness.

Nice. Hope they keep brewing this one.

pour is black with dark tan head, very tight creamy head. Nose is light, roasted coffee, hint of malt sweetness, and faint citrus hop. Taste is more roasted and well made coffee, a touch nutty, almost no bitterness with a hint of cream and faint citrusy hop. Body isn't overly thick or heavy, very creamy and smooth, extremely drinkable and well made.

appearance- poured into a boston lager sig glass...good beige to light brown head. ok retention that dissipates to a thin layer that on top of the beer constantly, without going away. Appearance isn't that impressive, it looks like it should.

The nose is actually a tiny bit hoppy on top of the roasty, nutty, caramel and brown sugar notes. The tiny bit of hoppyness is of the low alpha acid variety, possibly noble hops, maybe east kent goldings? but that's just a guess. You also have the typical brown sugary roasty coffee and chocolate notes that come with a stout. slightly alcohol pungent.

The taste is good. A shade hoppy for a moment, then there is a very nutty thing going on with the malt side of things on top of a bit of cocoa flavor-powdery bitter cocoa, not sweet cocoa. The hoppy character in the nose translates to great balance in the middle. No overbearing hoppiness in the middle which is right where it should be for this style, up front but not lingering.

The finish is very roasty. Finishes like a great cup of dark roast coffee taken black.

Overall this beer has a great malt bill all around. the malt bill definitely has a full range of roasts of malt, light medium and dark roasted malts up front and a balanced bit of noble hops. good stuff, I'd buy it again.
