First had: on tap at Beermongers, Portland, OR

A small sampler of this was enough to convince me to go for a full snifter. A dark brown, semi-opaque liquid topped off with a nice cap of foamy, cream-colored head reminiscent of a well-crafted quad; nice retention and lacing. Aroma of caramel malts, chocolate, and molasses. More of the same in the taste: caramel, chocolate, molasses, with a definite bready rye spiciness, and some leafy hops in the finish. Woody and dry, but still mildly sweet throughout. Smooth, medium body, and great drinkablility.

On tap at Bailey's Taproom in PDX last night.

This beer pours a very dark brown with very good head retention and considerable lacing. The nose is attrative, and (like the flavor profile) shows a considerable rye component. Otherwise, I get some brown sugar and dark chocolate in this is easy drinking, moderately sweet, easy to appreciate beer. The chocolate and rye flavor blend together very well in this beer, and it has a very nice, soft plush mouthfeel. Also, the rye and noticeable hoppy finish seem to dry this beer out a bit at the end. Drinkability is very good, though I wouldn't have minded if the rye flavor was dialed down just a bit.

A nice, solid, winter holiday beer from New Old Lompoc.
