Ummm... I can't beleive tha oppourtunity to have a beer in one of the most famous brew pubs in the world. The capital of smoked beers. I actually did a brewery tour which is about a few miles away. That was amazing and a must do. It's near the Spezial beer garden and a good idea to do them at the same trip.
The brewpub is expceptional and atomopehere an A plus. great service, way above avg German pub fare which suprised me. It was some of the best German good I had on the trip, well done! Only beef is that all the beers were not present for sampling. But still, and amzing visit and Bamberg is worth going out of your way to visit.

No clue why I didn't review Schlenkerla on my last trip, but here I am. Heller-Trum is in the heart of old-town Bamberg and is honestly pretty close to almost any area of town thanks to its central location.
While most people associate Bamberg with smoked beers (thanks to this brewery in most cases), Shlenkerla is one of only two places that truly features the style on a regular basis.
Like most places in Bamberg, Shlenkerla is laden with wood throughout, although it's much larger than almost all of the other halls in town. There are 3-4 different indoor areas and a biergarten in the back that opens up to an alleyway as well.
In terms of beers, Schlenkerla always has at least their normal maerzen rauchbier and weizen rauchbier on tap. In addition to those, they also offer an ungespundetes (not smoked), bottled versions of their helles, bock, oak doppelbock, and potentially some seasonal beers as well. On my visit in 8/13 they were serving their Krausen, which is a milder gravity-keg based rauchbier that was absolutely wonderful. Their pre-Easter Lentbier is also particularly sought-after.
For food, they have a full Franconian menu, featuring dishes like sourbraten, schnitzel, and their specialty "Bamberg Onion." In addition to that, I can vouch that their obadzda might be the best I've ever had and is spiked with a little bit of relish.
No Bamberg trip is complete without a trip to Schlenkerla, and there's nothing wrong with that at all. The beers and food are good, the atmosphere is nice, and seating is readily available as well. Plus, the staff is also nice.

As others have said in the old town. I did think there were some tourists because of that, Special and Fassla had much less being across the river. Didn't take anything away from the place, just made it much busier. We were going to eat here but it was too crowded even on a Sunday afternoon. Obviously people like the food.
Cool wood timbered old building, hallways and separated rooms everywhere. If you snake through the garten is out back. Also reachable through the side alley.
Only the Marzen and Weizen on tap, was hoping a least for the Urbock, but I was still satisfied.
A great town you can easily spend a couple days sight seeing in, with some brewery visiting in between. This is definetely a cool must stop.
If I lived here I would have the minikeg available for purchase in my house at all times. Definetely cheaper at the source.

Went to the brewery while I was in Bamberg. Great atmosphere! I have a family friend that lives in Bamberg! I had a great time with great friends! Not so much a tourist place. Alot of locals are present. They have a great history and a great staff! Must see if in Germany!

This was the best place I ever ate in Germany. The atmosphere was outstanding. The food was nearly perfect, and the beer was a classic complement. I had the Schweinehaxe with Knoedel and Red cabbage, and paired it with the Rauchbier straight from the tap. Pure heaven on earth. Try it, you won't be disappointed.

Perceived as the crown jewel of Bamberg regarding beer culture and for good reason; their smoked beers are delicious. Judging by the crowds on the street with and without glasses of Aecht-Schlenkerla in their hands, I would think that this area also has a lot of sightseeing. There are a few rooms to Schlenkerla, which I was lucky to find a rare empty seat for myself. The cool part being I was at the place which makes a style of beer which I love. The downside being that there were only two beer options; the smoked marzen, or the smoked weizen. I stayed classic and got the marzen, which was very well balanced between the smoke and malt, better balanced and fresher than anything I could get in California. Both styles are served in their own glass and in half-liter quantities, and at €2.50 and €2.70 respectively, is actually cheaper here than at any bottleshop where I live! Go for the experience, have a rauchbier, and get back to taking pictures of the town.
