Poured into oversized snifter. Black opaque body, zero light breaking the surface. One and a half finger sandy colored head. the head recedes rather quickly leaving a full sheet of lacing stuck to the walls of the glass.
The nose blends and interesting combination of chocolate, dark fruit and bright citrus. Rich chocolate, deep caramel and subtle molasses aromas greet the nose. Just behind the dark fruit aroma comes out. The raisin and prune scents merge with the chocolate up front beautifully. On the back a brighter citrus aroma provides some levity to the overall bouquet.
The flavor is not exactly what you would expect from the aroma. The same characteristics are picked up the the balance and intensity vary a bit. Chocolate flavor develops first but immediately transitions into a heavy caramelized sugars then on to a raisin and prune flavor. The flavor brightens a bit as it moves back. An underlying citrus sweetness combines with a sweet raisin flavor on the back. A lingering combination of chocolate, burnt sugar and sweet raisin remain after the swallow.
Medium to full bodied, a big beer but lacks viscosity. Carbonation is moderate and appropriate. Slightly slick texture left on the tongue. Finish is fairly long.
Overall another impressive offering from He'Brew/Schmaltz. The most impressive characteristic is the integration/cloaking of the alcohol. Very smooth beer, interesting combination of flavors but layered very well. Easy to drink, rather enjoyable. The price is right, no reason not to pick one up.

Properly (but accidentally; forgot about it) cellared bottle. Poured into an Elysian snifter. a very dark russet brown, appearing black in the glass. Thin light tan head with good retention and lacing. Aroma of toasted and caramel malt, dark and dried stone fruit, hint of chocolate and red wine. Flavor of caramel malt with hints of toasted malt, dried stone fruit and raisins, slight cherry and chocolate. Complex and well integrated. Warming, but not boozy, which is amazing. Medium bodied with light carbonation. Wish I had tried this fresh to compare, but with one year on it, this is very, very nice and very possibly much better balanced. Lots of barley wine elements, but also lightly toasted and sweet malt. Wish I had put two away, but glad I had a chance to try this.
