Almost pitch black with some ruby brownish notes around the edges. The head is brown, a finger thick, but fleeting; leaving a nice ring of white creaminess on top.

Very malty. Roasted barley, toffee, coffee and even a bit of chocolate fill the nose. Lurking in the background is the alcohol.

Tons of malt. Despite 15 types of hops, there's little hop presence. Coffee and bittersweet chocolate. Again, the ridiculous amounts of alcohol are there, but masked til the finish. Has a grainy alcohol taste.

Despite everything in it, it's a creamy beer. Almost sweet, then slightly acidic before the bit of heat in the swallow. Full bodied.

Really, a pretty good beer here. The ABV scares me and I know I'll be asleep in no time, but it's gentle on the palate and taste buds.

Properly (but accidentally; forgot about it) cellared bottle. Poured into an Elysian snifter. a very dark russet brown, appearing black in the glass. Thin light tan head with good retention and lacing. Aroma of toasted and caramel malt, dark and dried stone fruit, hint of chocolate and red wine. Flavor of caramel malt with hints of toasted malt, dried stone fruit and raisins, slight cherry and chocolate. Complex and well integrated. Warming, but not boozy, which is amazing. Medium bodied with light carbonation. Wish I had tried this fresh to compare, but with one year on it, this is very, very nice and very possibly much better balanced. Lots of barley wine elements, but also lightly toasted and sweet malt. Wish I had put two away, but glad I had a chance to try this.
