A: A very dark brown pour with a good sized, dense light brown head. Fades slowly, leaving a pretty decent amount of lacing on the glass.

S: Huge aroma, can smell it across the room. Doesn't smell very far from a spiced rum. Boozy, loaded with molasses, figs, grapes and raisin. Lots of caramel in there too and perhaps some toffee and brown sugar. No real evidence of hops found, but not really that surprising given the strength of the malt base. Super big and super sweet.

T: Very thick and ridiculously sweet. I'm getting tons of sweet caramel and molasses up front with a touch of brown sugar. Some dark fruits kick in, especially the fig and raisin. Aftertaste has a touch of cocoa in it as the sweetness fades away. Pure malt sweetness all the way through. Just a hint of alcohol burn in the aftertaste but it's mostly covered up by the sugary sweetness.

M: Ridiculously heavy, syrupy and cloyingly sweet.

O: Some big beers try to balance their sweetness with hops. This beer is like drinking maple syrup. Over the top sweet. It's like drinking an iced english barleywine or something. I had a tough time putting down the whole bottle it was so rich. Then again it also hides its alcohol well and its very complex. Hard to decide on a score.

Properly (but accidentally; forgot about it) cellared bottle. Poured into an Elysian snifter. a very dark russet brown, appearing black in the glass. Thin light tan head with good retention and lacing. Aroma of toasted and caramel malt, dark and dried stone fruit, hint of chocolate and red wine. Flavor of caramel malt with hints of toasted malt, dried stone fruit and raisins, slight cherry and chocolate. Complex and well integrated. Warming, but not boozy, which is amazing. Medium bodied with light carbonation. Wish I had tried this fresh to compare, but with one year on it, this is very, very nice and very possibly much better balanced. Lots of barley wine elements, but also lightly toasted and sweet malt. Wish I had put two away, but glad I had a chance to try this.
