He'Brew Rejewvenator (Year Of The Grape) 2010 | 500 ml. | 8.2% ABV

Brewer: Shmaltz Brewing Company (He'Brew)
Style: Doppelbock
Glass: pint

Appearance:
Somewhere between burnt umber and cherry red. Frothy 1" head and drapes of lacing along the side of the glass.

Aroma:
Barley malt, brandy, fermenting grapes, brown sugar

Taste:
Figs, barley malt, caramel, grape juice, and a touch of brown sugar. It's an odd mix, the grapes and the figs, but I like it.

Mouthfeel:
A bit thin and watery. Otherwise, it has decent carbonation.

Harmony:
It's an odd brew, but I think the doppelbock + grapes combination actually works.

Would I get it again?:
Yes.

Served from bottle into a Boulevard tulip. Poured a massively dark red-orange with a half finger off-white head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, grape, bread, and dark fruit. The flavor was of sweet malt, grape, and bread. It had a light feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a pretty decent brew. I went into this one not really expecting too much and it definitely delivered. It was fairly good for the style, but definitely lacked complexity in my opinion. I know they said it was the year of the grape on this bottle, but maybe they should have tried something else??? If you like grapes in your brew this one is for you, but if not, I wouldn’t bother.

22oz bottle into Duvel tulip.

Appearance: Free pour yields a 1/4 inch bonewhite head that dissipates quickly. Pours a hazy dark red and leaves no lacing.

Smell: Sugary malt with some grape undertones. Some clove-y/fig-y Belgian yeast. Very inviting. Grape tinge plus dark fruit makes it a bit red wine-like. Sharp kind of watery note (sounds weird, but I don't know how else to describe it) present as well, but mainly fluffy sweet pastries with grape and Belgian yeast highlights. Makes me want to drink it.

Taste: Pastry like malt up front, grape juice through the middle, watery finish that gets redeemed by an estery Belgian yeast-forward aftertaste. Same powerful Belgian dubbel flavors present up front in the next sip, followed by some chocolaty flavors and a caramely finish. Stays pretty diverse and tasty.

While this is half doppelbock, half dubbel, with grape juice added, I'd say it tastes more like 80% dubbel, 20% doppelbock, with some grape highlights. Regardless, it's consistently more satisfying than the previous year's Year of the Date.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied. Bit overcarbonated. Nice dryness in finish. Flavors would benefit from some smoothness/creaminess.

Overall: Not on par with Shmaltz's best beers (e.g. Jewbelation 13 original release was revelatory), but very satisfying. Huge step up from the 2009 Rejewvenator.

A: The beer is clear reddish amber in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a thin beige head that quickly died down, leaving patches of bubbles on the surface and a thick ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: There are aromas of Concord grapes in the nose along with some notes of malts.
T: The taste is similar to the smell and also has notes of raisins. There is a slight amount of sweetness with no apparent sweetness.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a low to moderate amount of carbonation.
O: The bottle says this is half doppelbock and half dubbel but I don’t really see many similarities from either of these styles. It’s pretty easy to drink considering its strength.

Consumed at Blue Palms Brewhouse, Hollywood CA on January 27, 2012.

Beer is a dark amber brown with ruby highlights. Very fine one-finger off-white to light tan head.

Not much aroma - some red grape. Tiny touch of musty malts.

Flavor is strong and none too pleasant. Tastes like Manischewitz Concord Grape wine with bitter wood accents blended with musty old malts. Kind of like sneaking some wine in a cellar. Not enjoyable!

Slightly dry on the finish, which goes a little way to ameliorating the frankly bad flavor.

It is safe to say I did not care for this beer at all, though I did manage to finish my glass.

this was aged 2 years, 22oz bottle poured into a Duvel tulip.
Appearance: Good look to start, Browish-red, with very little head, no retention, and very little lacing.

Nose: Grapes, Figs, dates, and candy sugar

Taste: Grapes and raisins at the beginning with a bit of malt and toast, then it just fades into a nasty grapey finish that is hard to overlook

Mouthfeel: Carbonation supporting a medium body, but it's impossible to shake the grape aftertaste, it carries over into the finish.

Overall: This started out nicely, but there was way too much grape and raisin- it was a drain pour for 4 out of 7 of us.

Had this on 2011-12-08 in Columbia, PA

A - Mildly hazy mahogany with a 1/2 finger head that fades quickly and leaves light lacing.

S - Concord grapes, citrus, molasses, dark fruit, some floral

T - Medium roasted malt, belgian yeast, pumpernickel, less grape than in the smell, raisn/prune, orange peel bitterness, spice. Less sweet and more sour and bitter in the finish than I expected.

M - Medium-heavy body and light-medium carbonation. Creamy. Resinous.

O - I enjoyed this brew although nowhere near as much as the Lenny's R.I.P.A
