Review from 4/2010 notes. Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a dark red brown, one finger tan head and lacing. Aroma of dark fruit, caramel malt, floral hops and alcohol. Mmmm. Creamy, malty, malty. Malt and caramel, dark fruits with a bit of a hop bite in the finish. Aggressive flavors and a bit boozy on the finish. Shmaltz does a great job on the malty beers.

He'Brew Jewbelation 13
Appearance: dark brown, very small head, and good lacing.
Smell: alcohol, caramel, roasted malts, and a slight apple.
Taste: dark fruit, roasted malt, and a candy sugar sweetness.
Mouthfeel: medium and smooth.
Overall:
This is a great jewbelation. The flavors are extremely well balanced and pleasing. Alcohol isn't tasted, but it is prevalent in the initial aroma.

Obtained a bottle of this through the jewbilation beer-menorah pack with Jewbilation 8-14 + Vertical of all the years included in the pack. We made our own Vertical at a tasting party but it tasted like straight booze!
A: Pours an extremely dark amber with a creamy biege head that lingers but dissipates the more you drink it. A truly beautiful pour.
S: BOOZE. Malt is heavy on the nose with slight hints of caramel on rye. Interesting scent that's quite pungent, malt and booze are heavy throughout the tasting of the brew.
T: Malt heaviness with a slight burning from the alcohol. Hops are present in a more strong ale/barleywine style, but it's very well done. Definitely not a session beer by any means, but it is quite delicious.
M: Geeze does this taste linger in your mouth. Mixes well with dessert and as a nightcap for your beer drinking session, but damn does that taste linger!
O: A beautifully crafted ale in the strong beer category, but not necessary for everyday drinking. A great late night porch beer that you can sip on for an extended period of time, but do not pass this around! Savor the taste for yourself!

Had while at Brewvival! Served from tap into a sampler Brewvival imperial pint. Poured a deep brown with a slight red hue with a half finger khaki head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. There was no lacing evident throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, slight roastiness, rye, and alcohol. The flavor was of sweet malt, roastiness, rye, alcohol, bread, and a very slight nuttiness. It had a medium feel on the palate with mild carbonation. Overall this was a fairly nice brew. Based on how much I hated the regular-13, this one was quite a surprise. I could see myself drinking more than half a bomber of this one without a problem, but would like grow tired of it by then. A nice spin on a brew that I was apparently born to hate.

A: Dark brown color; almost no light. poured a 1 finger tan head with fair retention dissipating to a thick skim. Laced in wide rings.
S: Fruits, chocolate and coffee. Floral hops. Lots of alcohol.
T: Much like the nose. Dark fruits and phenols come through prominently. Malt comes through really big in the taste. Clean and warming in the finish for a big beer.
M: Light to medium body. Moderate carbonation. Dry and hot iin the finish.
D: Complex and flavorful. The ABV is evident; definitely a sipper.

On-tap at Twisted Spoke. I'd never heard of this until I got my menu. Served in a tulip. Described as He'Brew Jewbelation 13 (Bar Mitzvah) aged in a Sazarac Rye Whiskey barrel.
A - Served with a finger-plus of light tan foam that featured great retention and lacework. The body is a slightly transparent dark amber and strangely is much lighter than the regular 13? For a 13% strong ale it's very attractive.
S - Big rye notes, with some caramel and vanilla as well. Malt-forward, with some earthy whiskey and a light faded hop note. Gets more chocolate-heavy as it warms up.
T - Taste is quite similar, but with more bread and yeast complementing the earthy whiskey and rye notes. Some brown sugar, licorice and candi sugar as well. Flavor seems a little too busy - you can begin the perceive the kitchen sink approach to brewing. The 13% is surprisingly well-hidden.
M - Smooth, medium body. Very creamy, with a pleasant, light carbonation tingle. Doesn't seem overly sticky or cloying, which is a welcome surprise.
D - It's perhaps a little too sweet and heavy for sessions, and the jumbled malt flavors are a bit fatiguing. That said, it's definitely the best He'Brew offering I've tried and worth a spin if it pops up at your local bar.

On-tap at the Porter Beer Bar in Atlanta. I wish I could remember the type of barrel but it escapes me and I can't find it listed anywhere. Knowing Schmaltz's propensity for rye it's a good bet this is the correct listing.
Pours black with a half-finger brown head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving solid lacing.
Smells of robust roasted malts with mild amounts of heavy molasses and dark chocolate. Also present are slight amounts of char.
Tastes similar to how it smells. Smooth roasted malt flavors kick things off and are soon sweetened by good amounts of molasses. Midway through the sip dark chocolate flavors temper the sweetness of the molasses and carry through to a mildly bitter ending.
Mouthfeel is very good. It's got a nice thickness with grainy carbonation.
Drinkability is good. I finished my glass easily and could have another.
Overall I have to say I thought some of the complexity from the non-BA 13 was lost on this one but it was nice that the sweetness was not as prevalent. I'll be interested to try this again with a bit of age on it. Still, even as it is it's worth a shot.

The beer pours a ruby red, almost brown color with a thick frothy off-white head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It has a solid malt scent that boasts of pale, roasted, and crystal malts. The hops are big and bold and round out the aroma. The rye barrels really compliment the overall aroma. The taste is much the same. Hops hit you up front and balance well with the malts, while the barrel aging brings it all together. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a tasty beer. Well rounded and smooth.
