Red hues shine through this amber ale. Small amount of head, doesn't last long; mild beady lace adorns my glass. Nose is malty with caramel, dark fruit, raisins, faint alcohol.

Fruity and slightly sweet up front, quickly fading to reveal surprising malt complexity. Caramel notes and more fruit mix with hops on the way out. Mild boozy warmth as it goes down.

This is a thick, creamy brew. Perfectly carbonated too. Far too easy to drink for a 10% -- this growler emptied faster than expected. Cheers!

12oz bottle as part of the 8-15th anniversary box set for $30. Has been cellared in the closed box for a year since I bought it. 10 year anniversary beer brewed with 10 different grains (2-row, dark crystal, chocolate, victory, munich, carapils, wheat, oatmeal, rye, and crystal rye), 10 different hops (warrior, northern brewer, mt. hood, centennial, cascade, vanguard, tettnang, czech saaz, willamette and simcoe) and 10% abv.

Pours out to a clear very dark brown, near black, forming a tightly beaded, very creamy light tan head (like good cappuccino foam). Excellent head retention and solid thick sticky sheets of lace, moderate carbonation, ~2.5 carbs or so. The nose is redolent of prunes, figs, raisins, spicy hops that have mellowed a bit, rum, carob, a little touch of bourbon, and subtle black walnut. Mouthfeel is slightly acidic due to the hops, with a bold, chewy and slightly syrupy mouthfeel. Cleanly fermented, no off-flavors, even at this age. The taste is a recap of the aroma with a pleasantly firm bitterness, in perfect balance with the malts, and some mild dark roasted malt flavor. Reminds me of a strongly hopped baltic porter, but not as roasted or astringent as a robust porter or American stout. Finish of black cherries, leather, mild pipe tobacco and cola. Compared to the 9, this has quite a bit more bitterness and the overall impression offers a roasted malt note that I didn't get from the 9. I also really like the substantial mouthfeel that this offers over the 9.

An excellent beer. Highly recommended.

12oz. bottle from the 2011 Holiday pack

(A)- Pours a dark brown color with some reddish highlights. Some tan to white froth.

(S)- A subtle roasted grain component. Some raisin and an interesting woody bark-like aroma.

(T)- Similar to the smell with cocoa and raisin in there.

(M)- A solid carbonation level. An ok balance, but it does get a touch abrasive with how heavy the grains are showing.

(O)- Overall, a bit abrasive in the mouthfeel, but still enjoyable despite that for sure.

Nearly black with a ruby glint in the wine glass. Modest head, but quite spritzy on the tongue. Subsequent pours show off the foam and add to the carbonation. They must have aged this in tanks and made sure it had enough spritz when they did the bottling.

Licorice is the single biggest flavor to my palate. Very dark roasted flavors dominate. There is just a whisper of sweet malt at first, but fairly dry as you sip. This doesn't seem to have the sweet base of residual sugars of most of the big Shmaltz beers. Rather sharp instead of sticky. Burnt figs is the impression once the hops start to dominate the finish.

Quite tasty, truly different, and maybe it's evidence that at least some beers can benefit from age. From the 12 oz bottle in the boxed set of older Jewbelations.

On tap at Hay Merchant in Houston, TX. Jewbelation 15 has already come out, so I guess this is a 5 year old keg. Pretty cool.

A: Pours a dark brown, nearly black color. A two finger dark beige head forms forms with good retention. Especially considering the age and alcohol. Light lace is left.
S: Big roast, coffee, and chocolate. It took me back a bit, almost a shock. Some oxidation is noticeable. Finishes a bit vinous.
T: Follows the nose, but I am ready for the big punch of roasted malt, coffee and chocolate. The oxidation becomes much more apparent as this warms. Again some dark fruits like grapes in the finish that makes this seem vinous. Plenty of alcohol.
M/D: A full body and still well carbonated after 5 years. Smooth at the same time. Plenty of alcohol, but still a nice beer to sip on. One snifter is enough for the night though.

This is a big, intense beer that is enjoyable. Though I could not take very much in a sitting. This has aged well, but still a monster of a beer.

The beer pours a dark brown color with a tan head. This aroma is full of chocolate and roasted malt, much like the Jewbelation 9. The flavor is more complex that the aroma, which is a good thing in my opinion. I get the same chocolate and roasted malt that I got in the aroma, but that is complimented by some molasses and a little bit of pine flavor from the hops. The alcohol is also quite present in the flavor. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

appears very dark brown, almost opaque. cream colored head, retains a thin covering. aroma of rich malt, brown sugar, raisins, figs. taste is also all malts, no hops detected. similar flavors in the taste. fairly thick, with low to medium carbonation.

overall - nice and complex.

Review from 1/2011 notes. Bottle from the 2011 Holiday Gift Pack. Poured into a Nostradamus flute glass. Pours a dark red brown with a trace of head, but sparse lacing. Faint malt and dark fruit aroma. Light taste of dark and roasted malts, dark fruit, faint hops. Very subdued. Nice flavors, but not assertive enough.
