App: Definitely more brown than #8 with a lighter color, but equally voluminous head.
Smell: A heavy dose of dark chocolate dominates the nose. A bit of candied fruit in the back.
Taste: Similar to # 8 but much smoother and less bitter. The malt bill seems to fall a bit flat with little flavor. A touch of spice from the rye, however. Finishes with dominantly citrusy bitterness.
Again, seemingly thin mouthfeel for something this strong. I guess I like my full-bodied beers.

Pours a dark, murky brown with a tiny off-white head that disappears immediately. Scent is pretty "meh..," not too much going on. Some nice malty aromas, but that's about it. I'm guessing the sweet booze and other aromas have faded away over the last four years. Taste has a bit more going on. Dark malt flavors with some vanilla and dark fruits. Light chocolate with some grain and cherry flavors. Mouthfeel is nicely carbonated, but a bit watery. Drinkability is fairly high for 9%. You don't get much of the booze...just a little on the back of the tongue as the beer warms. Overall, it's a decent beer. I think this one would have been much better fresh.

12oz bottle as part of the 8-15th anniversary box set for $30. Has been cellared in the closed box for a year since I bought it. 9 year anniversary beer brewed with 9 different grains (2-row, dark crystal, chocolate, victory, munich, carapils, wheat, oatmeal and rye), 9 different hops (warrior, northern brewer, mt. hood, centennial, cascade, vanguard, tettnang, czech saaz, and willamette) and 9% abv.
Pours out to a clear very dark brown, near black, forming a tightly beaded, very creamy light tan head (like good cappuccino foam). Excellent head retention and solid thick sticky sheets of lace, moderate carbonation, ~2.5 carbs or so. The nose is redolent of prunes, figs, raisins, spicy hops that have mellowed a bit, rum, carob, a little touch of bourbon, and subtle black walnut. Mouthfeel is slightly acidic due to the hops, with a chewy but not syrupy mouthfeel. Cleanly fermented, no off-flavors, even at this age. The taste is a recap of the aroma with a pleasant medium bitterness, in perfect balance with the malts, and some mild dark roasted malt flavor. Reminds me of a strongly hopped baltic porter, but not as roasted or astringent as a robust porter or American stout. Finish of black cherries, leather, mild pipe tobacco and cola. Compared to the 8, this has a little more green spiciness and +~10 IBU's from the hops, a touch more cola in the aftertaste, a subtle but noticeably different grain husk note and I prefer the more substantial mouthfeel that this offers.
An excellent beer. Highly recommended.

12oz. bottle from the 2011 Holiday pack
(A)- Pours a very dark brown; almost black color. Some tan froth.
(S)- A good raisin dark fruits with rich malts for a smell profile.
(T)- Grainy malts with lots of raisin; straightforward.
(M)- A good carbonation level and a solid balance. Good raisin bits in there.
(O)- A solid porter. I definitely liked this better than the 8, even though that was in a different style.

The beer pours a dark brown color with a tan head. This beer was not as complex as I hoped it would be. The aroma is full of chocolate and roasted malt, with not too much else going on. The flavor is more of the same, with some sweetness from the chocolate and some medium to heavily roasted malt. The alcohol also begins to creep in, but it is not as in your face as it is in some of the other Jewbelation beers. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Review from 1/2011 notes.Bottle from the 2011 Holiday Gift Pack.Poured into a He'brew small shaker pint. Pours a very dark red brown amber. Thin head and light lacing. Light malt aroma. Taste is mild dark malts, some nut flavors, faint chocolate and coffee. Everything is very low key. What flavor there is, is very pleasant. Would have scored higher with a bit more aggressive flavors. A good, but not remarkable brown ale
