Days out, and now on my way back east, days away yet. Last time here, 5 and change years back, the brewpub was only just under construction and they were dealing samples and the like though a brewery space hole in the wall. As such, I was up for seeing what’s what. And you know I would’ve been here earlier, but someone put the rest of Iowa and the entire state of Illinois between my hotel and here (fucker). Now waiting in line with the others wanting in, ‘cause it’s Saturday late in the day and it’s Three Floyds...
Called in at last (bar space for one, please, something with a view) and placed at the end of the bar, a laminated wood slat topped ½ octagon, (turn, turn, turn again), with a wood lip, base & footing, and seating for 14 on black leather swivel chairs. Glassware rack “L” over the end of the bar, holding hanging guest glassware, tulips, snifters & chalices. Barback wall holds shelved pints & mugs and some beer books, with house growlers lining the shelves above, and steins & toys shelved atop (I see Simpsons play, including a comic book guy action figure, and another one of Ozzy). On the around the bend barback wall, a row of 20 taps over stainless steel. A large Daliesque ‘Last Supper’ or something colorful print sits above, it’s like Redbone’s basement on overdrive.
The walls up front in blue, yellow & green, and white walls to the rear showing a 3 stooges movie, the rest done with brewery logo pieces, other brewery signage & tins. Artwork, brewerania, all sorts of sensory overload. Three Floyds 22’s in a row along an I-beam above all toyed up, guest tap handles lining the topside of the wall, De Ranke prints, an Ed Grimley doll (I must say), crazy 3F muralage, displayed shirts, couches with vine lined & festive colored lighting. Do not come here while on acid, you will not bode well. Black ceiling with fluro blue ducts, green splotched concrete floorings. Blue bullet lamps, track spots, spinny fans and a few TV’s.
This room holds 4 tables on one side, low cushys to both sides of the door, and 3 hightops behind me along the hop lined windows. Other room to the side holds 9 tables (high & low), and couchings up front for lounging.
On tap, well for starters, there are 13 hours beers; Alpha King Pale Ale, Robert the Bruce (Scottish), Pride & Joy (Mild), Gumballhead (American Pale Wheat Ale), Sand Pebbles (American Strong Brown) , Dreadnaught IPA, The Ostemoller (Smoked Helles), Owd Engwish Barley Whine, Drunk Monk (Hefe), Infinitas Attero (English Mild), Broo Doo (Hop Harvest), Moloko (Milk Stout), Gomorrah (stout).
Started with a sampler of 3 (Sand Pebbles, some very good maltiness, nutty & roasty; Infinitas Attero, bready, with some mild citrus flavors, an overall meh; and the Drunk Monk, a solid Hefe where banana lives), and then moved onto another set of 3 (Gumballhead, wheat & light citrus, pure love; The Ostemoller, aka Osti, big bacon aroma, good smoky flavors; and the Broo Doo, piney, citrusy, spicy, it did not suck). Had an Alpha King as it seemed the most reasonable thing to do, citrus, piney, good stuff. And then the girl next to me gave me a hit of her Moloko, which was lactose sweet, and as much of it as I needed. No sooner written than it kicked and was replaced by a bourbon barrel aged Mokolo called the Conquistador De Muerte, done with 3 peppers (Ancho, Guajillo & Passilla) and methamphetamine in Woodford barrels. And I also just missed the Gomorrah (Stout), a small beer run from the Sodom (impy), I woulda liked to have had at that. Alpha King Pale Ale, Gumballhead, the Ostemoller & Broo Doo were the best of ‘em.
The other 1/3 of the taps are guest entries. 7 of them, a few from elsewhere in Indiana (New Albanian Beak’s Best ESB, Oaken Barrel Razz-Wheat), some other regionals (Jolly Pumpkin Luciernaga, Great Divide Belgica, Victory St. Boisterous), and a few imports (Klokke Roeland, Murphys Irish Stout).
Also, a bottle list of 2 dozen + offerings; from PBR to Rochefort 10 and things in between. (Lovely) Orval runs a big $8, as do the De Dolle Oerbier & Dulle Teve. The Stone Vertical Epic 030303 however, runs a slightly pricier $200. That’s a lot of money for not good beer.
Food, hmmn. Hey, hit me with a pair of tacos, will ya’ kid? One chicken (with salsa verde, queso fresco & slaw, cabbage & cilantro) and one Chorizo (with pork & red chili sausage, cilantro, salsa roja con queso). The chorizo taco was money, man, and now I’m on the fence as to whether it’ll be another round of tacos or the chicken sandwich. It’s a tough one, but I’m diggin’ on the tacos, and so it will be.
Beer was fresh & tasty, the food held me well, and yeah, it’s a cool scene. But I’ve got to start looking East again so I guess I’ll take the check. And Dreadnaught & Broo Doo bottles to go, please.

2011: Waited about an hour on a saturday for a party of 6, not too bad considering. All manner of eye-catching schwag on the walls, an original Dreadnaught label painting, psychotronic art, flags, posters, soccer scarves, etc. Imagine a Bennigans approach to decor, acid dipped in Willy Wonka psychedelia. Great atmosphere, efficient staff, great food. Seems they are trying to position themselves as a restaurant, which was slightly odd. Was told at the door we couldn't stand at the bar for this reason. Overall a convivial experience though, and plan to return when time allows.
I've been here several times under various circumstances, most recently this past weekend. It was a busy friday night, the lot was packed, but we got in and found a table right away. After 10pm it seemed to clear out. They had a movie or film show projected on one wall.
We had appetizers and the homemade dessert special, which was strawberry rhubarb cobbler. Mad Anthony IPA was a guest draft, along with that I sampled a Dreadnaught in a 10oz. for $4. There were a few pub-only drafts, which are worth a trip alone.
Our server Sophie was really friendly and knowledgeable about the beers. We got a couple Gumballhead growlers to go, and also bottles of their latest small batch, Blackheart IPA.

Exactly a 12 hour drive from my house, on the way to Chicago. (its about 1 hour or so south east of Chicago, making the immediate area a decent place to stop outside of town) Casual, funky and comfortable place. Unusual location, in a industrial park, quite differant from what I am used to...great beer stop, growlers and bottles to go, 12 FFF selections on tap, with 8 quality guest taps, and 24 qual bottles. Tasty pub grub. The turkey burger and fries I had was a cut above the usual. Inexpensive compared to places in my local area, with 4 and 5 buck pints and 8-12 $ entrees on the food side. Gotta love a place that has "Good fellas" being projected on the wall, by the bar! Had a great visit...If in the area or anywhere close, check this place out

So my wife and I finally got to visit the mythical Three Floyds Brewing! With such high expectations surrounding this place and the beers, I was bracing myself for a disappointment. It did not happen.
Three Floyds is one of the best brewpubs in the nation!!!
The location is weird (in an industrial park) and so is the atmosphere, kind of college-town-coffee-place-meets-the-beer-industry-in-Chicagoland. But it is quirky nice inside, and comfy.
You're here for the beer, of course. 18 taps of 3Floyds, plus 4 guest beers. Good? I thought so! :-) Some rarities like Gamorah, Sodom and Barrel-Aged Moloko, plus a variety of styles and ABV's (from 3.4% to 11%).
Food is extremely good. No nachos or spinach dip here! Tapas-style, fancy grub that would go well in a NY or SF restaurant.
A great chorizo taco, pig's head terrine (yum!), boudin (made of pork liver)... pizzas look good. I love how meat-centric they are, and that they make everything in-house.
Service was very good on a busy Wednesday night, and not so good on an empty Tuesday afternoon at lunch time (they had only one waitress and one cook).
Prices are good for the food but HIGH for the beer. $9 for a snifter of Barrel-Aged Moloko!! $30 for a growler of Dreadnaught!!! And they don't refill growlers for some sanitary reason only they know. But other than these minor issues, 3 Floyds is DA BOMB!!!
Beers I tried: Dreadnaught (kind of disappointing), Sand Pebbles (disappointing), Alpha King (got growler, drinkable and nice), Owd English Barleywine (weird, too hoppy/citrusy), Barrel-Aged Moloko, Sodom RIS. On my second trip I had: Robert the Bruce (disappointing), Gamorah/Gomorrah (interesting) and Broo Doo Harvest Ale. From a bomber I bought at the brewpub I tried Moloko, which I also had on tap at The Sugar Maple in Milwaukee along with Arctic Panzer Wolf DIPA. This makes eleven 3Floyds beers I've tried!
Also: Lord Admiral Nelson, Thick White Freeks.

After a long drive from Morgantown WV, I was overjoyed to belly up to the bar at the brewpub. The location of 3 Floyds was not what I was expecting, and initially I thought my google map directions were off (yet again). The area looks like a school and hospital district, and at 10:00 at night, the area was completely dead. However, sure enough, after making a turn off of Superior Ave., there was the brewery/brewpub to the right.
The pub area itself is a modest size affair; as you walk in from the large parking lot you notice a smallish dining area to the right, and then a somewhat larger drinking area and fair size bar to the left (there is a small "take out" store area farther back to the left). This being 3 Floyds, there was all kind of great art work and sci-posters adorning the walls, along with beer and sports paraphenelia as well. There were also a few TV screens, and I think they were showig a movie (Apocolypse Now) on the back wall next to the bar. The vibe is very laid back and comfortable; very conducive to kicking back with a beer or three.
As for the selection, today they had some 20 different 3F selections on tap (one beer on cask), along with three guest beers. They also have a bottle list, with what appeared to be another 40 or so selections (nothing mindblowinig, but a solid list). Quality was excellent of course. Fresh Zombie Dust was just delicious, and I enjoyed the seasonal saison style beer and dreadnaught as well. I also ordered the Chicharroni nachos, just because they sounded intriguing and looked great (they were pretty good in fact). The folks next to me ordered a pizza, and that looked terrific as well. I get the impression that like their beer, they take their food pretty seriously here. Service was also quite good. The bartenders were quick, friendly and knowledgeable. Drink orders came quickly, and everyone at the pub was friendly and in a good mood.
Obviously, this is a great spot, and given my love of Zombie Dust, I'm sure I'd be over here all the time, just to drink that, if I lived nearby. Prices were OK as well I thought (especially given the proximity to Chicago), with most beers selling for $5 (imperial pints of Zombie Dust for $5!).
Any time I'm within 50 miles of this place, there's no doubt I'll made an effort to stop by again. Very glad I decided to stop in (even though I was pretty wiped after the 500 mile drive).

I've been meaning to stop at Three Floyds for a long time, but they're a long way from anywhere. I finally found my way there during a trip to Chicago, and had mixed feelings. Yes, they had a decent selection of 3F on tap (Alpha King, Rabid Rabbit, Drunk Monk, and more) and also some other good beers on tap and bottle (Bear Republic stout, Chimay Blue, Orval, Delirium Tremens, and so on). But I'd hoped to try Dark Lord or something else reasonably difficult to find...
Anyway the atmosphere was clean and inviting, nice woodwork on the bar and plenty of rare beer posters and sci fi geek crap on the walls. I was happy with the 3F beers I ordered and the food was not bad. I actually tried a hard boiled egg coated in sausage and deep fried which is bound to cause explosive gas soon. I bought a Dark Lord T-shirt but was shocked that it cost $25. I followed through on the purchase anyway but it still stings.
Good stop, but not worth a special trip unless it's Dark Lord Day.
EDIT: I just re-read this review, written 5+ years ago. I've since been to FFF dozens of times, on special occasions (DLDs) and just everyday stops. This place is awesome and there is always something good on tap. The prices are a bit high on some of the growlers and they don't refill (my only real complaints), but they make seriously good stuff and that's why I always return.

i stopped in for the first time this afternoon while travelling between chicago and south bend for work-related items.
i always imagined that exit 1 off of I-80 would be a strange place for a brewpub of this caliber because the area is rather crummy. i was pretty right as this place is located off a dirty-busy nw indiana road in a warehouse district underneath a watertower. diamond in the rough indeed
I was in around 4pm on a tuesday and had the joint mostly to myself. the interior was pretty sweet with cool 3F artwork everywhere and nice vibrant colors. I got the vibe that all of the employees were probably the coolest people within a 20 mile radius.
obviously, the beer is of the highest possible quality.
service was pretty strong as i was the only person at the bar.
the selection was great. There were 12+ 3F taps including a 5 or 6 that i had never come across. I had an alpha khan and a gorm noire and picked up 4 alpha kong bombers to take back to madison. there were a bunch of guest taps as well that were all top notch beers, most of which appeared to be imports. There were also a number of guest bottles and a variety of 3F bottles available. Growlers appeared to only be available for a few standard beers.
food: everything looked good but i did not eat

I've been to around 250 brewpubs in North America including a previous visit to 3Floyds a couple of years back when it was an infomal tap room with a picnic table. Three Floyds is one of the best in the midwest for beer.
Playing movies on the wall (Ferris Bueller's Day Off ) with no sound.
No smoking - I love smelling my beer
Comfortable lounge feel in a bland industrial park setting
Well staffed and good service
Good selection of beers tilting towards Beligians
Ideal intial stop for trip to Chicago from the East (a very nice Hampton Inn around the corner)
The beers are all excellent*
*The Christmas ale was a little heavy on coffee and I would have liked more of a spice (ginger) approach. Just my preference.

I've been to Three Floyds a few times now but it hasn't lost its luster.
The atmosphere is every bit as eclectic, authentic and accomplished as the beers. They have great music, a varied and interesting decor and a comfortable atmosphere. The crowd is usually passionate and diverse.
The beer is phenomenal. FFF knows hops like few others (only RR and Alpine come to mind). I really enjoy Gumballhead, Zombie Dust, Dreadnaught, Arctic Panzer Wolf and Apocalypse Cow. They're all outstanding but I was surprised to find myself favoring the smaller beers; especially Zombie Dust. Maybe it's my age.
The service certainly depends on the crowd size. On busier visits, I've felt a bit neglected. But after being shut out by long lines once, I'm always happy just to get in.
The food is fantastic! On our latest visit, we had the brisket tacos, short rib burger, mac & cheese and poutine tots. They're all pretty rich but are out of this world!
Three Floyds does everything right. I just wish it were bigger.

This isn't your mom and dad's brewpub, where it is more likely you see big tatooed men arm wrestling. But don't let the looks scare you, as they are good people and make good beer...besides that is part of the places charm. The service was ok and the selection was good, although with the amount of world class beers this place has could be better. Tried a hand full of beers I wasn't able to try before in Wisconsin, where the word of the day was hops. While I do like a good IPA, I'm not a big IPA fan but need to give credit where credit is due. Really liked their scotch ale, and the art that adorned the walls. Seemed a little pricey, but you get what you pay for. Will go back again and have 3 times.
