world class in my book! wish they had this for sale in bombers because i would've bought a case. this is by far the best stout i have had in a very long time.

A: black with a tan head that is there the entire time you drink it.

S: oatmeal, alcohol, vanilla, bourbon.

T: WOW. everything i said in the smell is in the taste, at least for me it is. outstanding!

M: full bodied, which is a must for me in a stout, i dont want my stout to be thin.

O: i wish i would've gotten more and i wish it were around 24/7/365

Cat pee and coffee: a winning combination.

Looks--there's two kids next to me right now talking about how the fact that all your feelings come from nerves are proof that god is a materiality. There's progressive metal blasting. The guy who poured me this beer has a goatee tattooed onto his face.

The Floyds is weird. You think you're gonna show up during off hours and just sneak a quick one for the road and it turns into a big drunk ordeal.

But right now, this--this has the distinct taste of cat pee. It's a particular form of high-acide hoppiness I've noted before but never has it been more prominent. And never, shamefully, has it been so tasty.

The stout nodes a bit tart but the cat pee sees them through. The body is a little thin but the cat pee sees it through.

I need to be arrested.

Appearance - Dark, dark, dark! Lives up to its name. 1 finger of head disappeared quickly. Nice lacing.

Smell - Sweet citrus hops! Some floral hints intertwined.

Taste - Fruit! Hints of grapefruit. A citrusy stout, so unique. Loving it. Chocolate/espresso notes come out in the aftertaste. The alcohol is blended so well, it's ridiculous. Light, pleasant alcohol vapor on the breath afterwards. Not hot whatsoever. Just right.

Mouthfeel - Thick, a little bit of chew to it. Finishes slightly dry & sticky on the lips.

Overall - Amazingly unique brew. Lives up to their slogan "It's not normal" and then some. I will be getting this every time I come down to the brewpub. If they ever bottle it, I will be getting it then too. 10.4% ABV?! Haha. It goes down so smooth, it's not even funny. The most dangerously drinkable beer I've tried to date. Awesome.

Serving Type: 10oz goblet

A: Black, near opaque color with minimal head. Nice alcohol legs and some slight lacing

S: Hops, nice citrus hops. A bit of booze, some good caramel & toffee roast notes. A great smelling hoppy stout.

T: This one is mostly malts, nice roasted malts. Chocolate, toffee, slightly sweet. Barely any hops as I was expecting from the nose on this one. Very slight on the booze notes, dangerously drinkable

M: Medium mouthfeel. Coats the mouth nicely with roasted malts with a hint of booze.

O: A great stout. Deceptively drinkable, i could drink this all day, then be plastered. The nose is wonderful but the taste doesn't follow the nose, which is good IMO. One of the best beers I've tasted from FFF this year.

Enjoyed on tap FFF. Served in a 10 oz. goblet.

A: Pours an obsidian black color with a fluffy tan head forming on the pour. Recedes to a thin ring and leaves little splotches of lace.

S: Citrus hoppiness with some noticeable booze and some chocolate. Light roast as well.

T: Roasty malts with some sweet booze. Milk chocolate with a minimal citrus hop backing. Some black licorice as well.

M: Medium to heavy bodied with a little chew to it. Smooth, roasty and sweet finish.

O: A very nice and big stout. Boozy, tons of chocolate and roast. One of the better stouts from FFF.

I am not normaly a dark beer drinker, but i was told that this brew i could not pass up.

Pours dark as night with a chocalate colorded head about a hlaf inch high.

Smells of coffee, toffe and chocalate with a nice almost citrus like aroma.

I was taken away by the taste of this brew. Righ in front you get hit by the hops in this one. Almost a citrus/cascade dry hop. Very full body, lots of booze. Again hints of choclate, toffe, and pine.

From three floyds, i was expecting a rather bitter finish, but is was quite subtle. Went down with out a backlash of bitterness.

overall i wish this was a beer that they continue to make and hopefully one day bottle.

Poured in a snifter.

I was expecting a more if a barrel aged taste, and smell off of this. At first I was a bit disappointed, but after the first big sip I enjoyed the hell out of it!

Citrus taste in a stout!!! So weird, but so damn good! It's a beer that almost needs to be drank to fully appreciate the nature if this beast. It's like a IPA and a stout hybrid. Grapefruit, pineapple, all sorts of citrus with some chocolate! So wonderful and complex!

Reviewing the Blot Out The Sun Stout from Three Floyds Brewing Company out of Munster, Indiana. My presumption is that this is a barrel treatment of their Irish Dry Stout, Black Sun. This beer is aptly named after the infamous Simpsons story arc "Who Shot Mr. Burns?"
Score: 88

Tap pour served in a 10 oz glass at the Three Floyds Brewery and enjoyed on 12/28/12. Review is from iPhone notes.

Appearance: Deep brown color. Served with thin layer of khaki tan head that settles to a ring around the glass. Average lacing, above average retention. 3.5/5

Smell: Smells like a brown sugar infused IPA. Piney hops, brown sugar, and non-descript tropical citrus. There is a faint hint of bourbon, but not much barrel characteristic present at all. 4/5

Taste: Are we sure this is a stout and not a black IPA? malty brown sugar and grassy, tropical citrus hops. Very hoppy. Hint of cocoa. No booziness. Mildly sweet. Virtually no barrel characteristic present. 4/5

Mouthfeel: Medium-full bodied, low carbonation. Sticky, malty and hoppy. 3.5/5

Overall: Outside of their variants for Moloko and Dark Lord, I have been very disappointed by Three Floyds' barrel program.

Recommendation: Worth drinking, but not worth going out of your way to try. This beer is overpriced for what it is, and for what you can get (even at a bar, even in Chicago) for $8, in my opinion.

Pairings: Hamburgers.

Cost: $8 for a 10 oz glass.

I had this on-tap at Three Floyds on Christmas Eve.

Served in a snifter.

A: Despite the extreme noirness pertaining to the color (or lack thereof) of the brew, this had a rather MASSIVE mocha head. Totally not used to that in Imperial Stouts. Looked dangerous.

S: Hoppy and fruity as hell! Was this supposed to be an Imperial Black IPA? Pineapple, grapefruit, mangos, and others from the tropics all wrapped up in a roasted, dark raw cacao, blanket.

T: Seriously, I can't believe I tasted pineapple first in an Imperial Stout. That's most definitely a first! Sure, it also had a roasty, chocolatey, malt bill as well, but the pine and grapefruit could not be ignored. Was this supposed to be an Imperial version of "Black Sun?"

M: Char bitterness on the end to let us know that this was supposed to be a stout, fruity, organic sweetness, low carbonation, and with ridiculous lacing.

O: I will NEVER forget that I tried this beer for as long as I live. Did I mention that it was also awesomely delicious?

On-tap at Three Floyds, served in a tulip:

A - Cocoa colored 1" head with good retention, lacing was meadium to heavy. A nice cap and collar . The Color is very dark with maybe a hint of raspberry at the sides. Obvious by the name of the beer, light does not pass through this one.

S - Moderate hops, chocolate and a bit ofcaramel. There is no obvious alcohol on the nose. it is an interesting blend of the hops and chocolate.

T - Tastes just like it smells, maybe a bit more of the citrus character of the hops comes through. I get no sense of the alchol but there is a trace of smokiness on the finish that I really enjoyed.

M - Carbonation was moderate, a nice thick brew.

O - Really enjoyable, I could see having one of these while sitting by a fire. This is one that is on the edge of being a sipper. If they bottle this, I'll rack a few. If not, I will get it again next time I go to the Brewpub.

Enjoyed at the brewpub.

Pours damn near black with a fingers worth of tan head. Lots of legs.

The nose is very hoppy and has some malt and cocoa nibs as a backbone. Some caramel and coffee notes also linger after the hop takeover.

The flavor is very well integrated with hops up front and sweet malt finishing the flavor. Some citrus and pineapple fruit notes are sharp upfront. There is chocolate, roasted malt and coffee at the finish.

The mouthfeel is heavy with light carbonation. Smooth and silky.

Overall, I loved this because of the great balance of hops and stout characteristics.

On-tap at Big Star. Served in a hybrid pint-pils sort of glass.

A - Mocha foam with good retention eventually settles to a thick cap and collar, leaving behind thin fingers of lacing. Near-black with a hint of ruby transparency at the edges of the glass.

S - This is one ridiculously hoppy stout, verging on Black IPA levels. It's also really sweet; I'm curious if there's some type of sugar added to this? Very little roast, with hefty doses of milk chocolate and caramel. The hop aroma is the signature citrus and floral combo that graces many 3 Floyds offerings. No obvious alcohol here.

T - The taste is quite similar, with tons of citrus hop flavor mixed in with sugar malts and milk chocolate flavors. There's a touch of smoke in the finish, but this is very much a hop and sugar bomb; the balance is more evocative of Imperial Black IPA than Imperial Stout (although the feel is more of the latter). Again, alcohol is totally concealed.

M - Viscous and chewy, with low carbonation, and a mouth-coating sticky finish. Minimal alcohol warmth. Just a really big and decadent; perhaps almost overly so.

D - I easily crushed the glass, and I could have had a few if it weren't for the slightly obscene $10 price tag. The hop profile really reminded me of Black Sun, so I'm wondering if this is an Imperial version of some sort. Some of my friends disliked this beer, but I thought it was really enjoyable.
