Poured into a pint glass from the bomber. The other half of the bottle was used in Smoked Gouda Soup, and it was fabulous. Leaving a nice off-white head, the beer was a copper color with tons of sediment floating in the glass. The sediment reminds me of a winter snow globe. The initial aroma is hops, this is obviously a beer by the Floyds. One also gets the alcohol in the aroma, but this is a minor issue. In the initial taste, the beer bursted with grapefruit like hops. A citrusy pineapple, a hint a peach skin and some pine were also present. Where this beer gets interesting is in the aftertaste. The tartness of the rye is accompanied by a grapefruit marmalade accent. The thicker texture really allows the flavor to linger and mellow on the tongue. And while the citrus mellows, the rye just seems top stay. A mild alcohol warming makes an impression, though it is surprisingly mellow for the ABV. Overall, this is a great beer. Best of all, no lines outside the building necessary for this one.

Great label, even better idea for a brew: a rye DIPA. Cheers!

A: A little haze on the pour, but it’s mostly a clean orange, pretty fizzy. The head is short and cream-colored, not moving from its original height of a half-inch; it’s a solid layer of foamy cream. Sparse spots of lacing.

S: A pungent, yet polished Three Floyds experience: hop aromas come out first in a big way, but with balance. In some other beers from this brewery, there’s a clear layering of juicy hops over caramel malts. Not here, though: the hops are a sweet and spicy mix of pepper, citrus, peach, and grass, and the malts have a good rye tone of pumpernickel spice and toffee. It all comes out spiced and dark, and I like it.

T: Not as crisp as the nose would have you believe, coming off more like a black ale than a spicy rye. Toasted malt flavors are what you notice first, toffee, near-burnt bread, dark pumpernickel tastes developing slowly and smoothly over the drink. It has a bit of anise, too, which makes it even more reminiscent of a black ale. Herbal, spicy hops give this a fiery cinnamon and lemon-pepper profile – more flavor than bitterness. This palate seems to be more about flavor maturity than hardcore IPA hoppiness. Finishes with a lingering dark spice, like the aftertaste of a garlic-heavy Italian dish (not in a bad way).

M: Excellent here: full feeling, though it keeps away from a syrupy thickness. Just chewy enough.

O: Maybe it’s my love of Dio talking, but this was one of the most satisfying Three Floyds beers I’ve had in a while. Usually I don’t like big black ale tastes (anise especially), but this has enough Three Floyds flair to counteract the norm; it’s something different from this brewer, and they nailed it.

Thanks to Robbie for this bottle! About 1-2 months old (but no bottle dating).

A - Medium orange, slightly cloudy with ahin layer of cream-colored head.

S - A massive frsh grapefruit aroma up front with a big pine presence as well. Some lighter peach notes and touch of spicy from the rye provide secondary aromas. Very fresh and very inviting nose!

T - Fresh grapefruit, pine and peach flavours accompany a very good but not overwhelming bitterness. Light caramel and spice from the malt base in the background. Very fresh and juicy.

M - Medium body. Chewy. Light carbonation. Lots of stick hop oils.

Poured into a medium sized stemmed tulip and served at 45 degrees.

Appearance: Bright orange color body with a white fluffy 2 finger head. Beautiful lacing, great carbonation and effervescence.

Aroma: Ridiculous tropical and citrus fruits, spicy rye, wheat, floral and piney hop aromas, caramel, bready malts & yeast on the back end. The aroma is so bright, strong, inviting and prevents you from putting down your glass.

Taste: Ripe and tart grapefruit, apricot, mango, orange, apple skin and lemon fruit. Spicy rye bread, zesty yeast notes, pine resin, earthy wheat elements, and mild bitter floral hops. The malts and barley are solidly represented, smooth. The malts really balance out the sweetness and the bitterness that dominate. This reminds me of 3FFF’s Dreadnaught but with rye malt added to the grist.

Mouth feel: Medium to full bodied, carbonation is perfect, drinks smoothly, fulfilling, refreshing, and almost too drinkable.

Overall: I am really impressed at how drinkable, balanced and well-crafted this is. I drank the entire bottle in less than 15 minutes and I only put the glass down once only for a refill! This is easily one of the top DIPA’s that 3Floyds brews and the best Double Rye IPA that I’ve had currently to date! I’m looking forward to getting this again! I’m positive that they will be releasing this again later this year, so do not pass this one up!

Shared 3 ways at lunch.

Slightly cloudy, orange pour. Some white head, solid retention. Strong aroma of fresh hops and rye, both prominent.

Hoppy resin and intense rye consume my palate, malt be damned! Unfortunately for them, I don't really like rye, and its abundance here is a turn off.

If rye and west coast IPAs are your thing, this is for you.

A - Pours a hazy orange/gold color with a massive billowing head and incredibly sticky lacing, carbonation is small and steady.

S - Alot of sweet, juicy, assertive and pungent fruit resin: mango, papaya, tangerine, and pineapple being the strongest aroma of the bunch. The only indication of malt anywhere in the nose is from the spicy rye and nothing else.

T - Taste follows the nose with a massive wall of resinous and oily tropical from start to finish. Up front is a massive wave of pineapple rinds, mangos, and tangerines and ends with a perfect sweet red grapefruit bitterness. The rye lends itself to a spicy, peppery character that adds to the intensity of the frutiness - lingering fruity spice. As the beer gradually warms a slight touch of caramel malt surfaces but it's buried way down there. There is some alcohol effervescence and warming as it slides down the throat.

M - Medium body, semi-dry finish, slightly oily, and with prickly carbonation.

O - For any lover of Imperial IPA/D-IPA's, this is a "fantabulous" beer and a must try before it starts fading. Thanks, jisom123!!

Thanks to Karsten for this. Very welcome in the Lone Star State.

A - poured vigorously into a tulip. Majestic. Sunset gold with slightly off-white, huge head. Carbonation is clearly evident. Really nice lacing. Can't find a fault, it's beautiful.

S - floral and sweet, citrus hops. Heavenly. I'm not getting a lot of maltiness, but I suck at picking that stuff out. It smells like heaven, honestly. That's it. Like ZD, or Lunch.

T - definitely sweet and fruity up front. There is a little spiciness in the middle of the tongue, which is followed by a nice hop bitterness. Not overpowering by any means though. The balance on this thing is amazing.

M - medium, well-carbonated, and a little oily. The bitterness sticks around for a bit but doesn't get annoying.

O - I'll admit that DIPAs are my favorite style, and the rye addition is excellent. I also didn't think Rye'd da Lightning was out of this world, so my expectations were a little low. However, it's hard for me to find a fault here. Seriously, the guys in Munster have outdone themselves. This is insanely good, and might be worth giving up a child for. Not a first-born, but one of the later ones for sure.

Very aromatic with a juiciness to the aromas of hops, Florida oranges, mangoes, and florals.

Full bodied with good depth and flavors of hops, mangoes and Florida oranges.

This was a really good DIPA. This didn't show much booze to it either and held the style really well

A: Pours a hazy cloudy orange color. Not a ton of head. Thin ring of white. Not a ton of lacing. Carbo low?

S: Well it fairly malty. I guess with a double rye IPA, that's what you get. Getting some nice hop character too: orange, citrus, pine the usual players. That rye spice is there.

T: Lots of hop bitterness on tip of tongue. The rye spice is there in the middle, along with a strong malt bill. I guess my palate was fatigued. This one is really starting to grow on me. As you drink those hop flavors come out more. Dry spicy finish. Lingering hop flavors.

M: Medium bodied.

Reviewing Rye'da Tiger from Three Floyds Brewing Company out of Munster, Indiana. HUGE thanks to Will "my name is fake" Wilberg for hooking me up with the bottle!

Bottle is from mid-September 2012. Served in a Founders snifter and enjoyed on 10/04/12.

Appearance: Pours a bright honey-orange color with a lot of color depth when held up to the light due its transparent quality. Can be a straight honey or orange color depending on the angle. Quite interesting! A finger of cream-colored seafoam head at pour settles to a ring around the glass. Excellent lacing and retention. I really dig the frothy head that clings to the side of the glass after every sip. What a beautiful IPA! On the second pour, there were some floaties in the glass that made this one a little less beautiful....still an excellent looking IPA though! 4.5/5

Smell: In-your-face doses of slightly candied peaches and tangerines upfront. Pineapple, orange peels, rye spice, pine, and lemon candy overlay a faint caramel malt backbone. This beer is just loaded with sweet tropical fruit juice aromas and a nice and clean, piney-hoppy counterbalance to the sweetness in the nose. Wow. Simply wow. I was not expecting something so balanced and robust! 4.75/5

Taste: Hoppy oranges, tangerines and peaches up front. This is pure tropical fruit IPA juice. There is also a nice and subtle spice kick on the front of the tongue that I presume is from the rye. The back end of the flavor of this beer is bitter, earthy hops, caramel malt and faint rye flavor. The finish is pretty bitter, but the tropical citrus sweetness really helps keep it from going to far over the edge. 4.75

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with carbonation on the heavier side of light. Super oily mouthfeel. The bitterness really layers on the tongue and makes for an interesting palate-experience when paired with the faint rye kick this beer packs. 5/5

Overall: What a world class, in-your-face IPA that is bold and unforgiving. Bitter, but dangerously smooth. The subtle rye complexity here is a real nice complement to the hoppiness. After my experience with Rye'd Da Lightning, I was not expecting something so great. Kudos to Three Floyds for creating yet another of the best hoppy beers out there!

Recommendation: Seek this out and and consume it fresh! Unless you hate IPA and hoppy beers, of course.

Pairings:Spicy, homemade beer chili (the kind that Chris Gierhart makes when you pony up to '86 the pork!).

Cost: $10 for a 22 oz (bomber) bottle.

t: Taste follows the nose but the rye seems to more pronounced. Initial burst of citrusy hops. Spicy rye really picks up mid taste and stays through the end.

m: medium body. Clean and crisp

o: This is ok but I much prefer Rye'd da Lightning. The rye was better nuanced in the latter. Good to try once but I will not seek out again.

Poured into FFF teku glass

Appearance: Looks like your typical DIPA especially one from FFF. Dark orange to copper with golden hues on the edges. Beautiful pillow like two finger head with a bone white color. Tons of carbonation is flowing up the sides of my glass.

Smell: Holy hell this smells great and very typical of a FFF DIPA offering. Up front a shit ton of tropical and citrus fruits. Grapefruit, orange peel, mango, pineapple, tangerine and some lemon zest. I am definitely picking up some of the spice from the rye at the back end but the nose is dominated by FFF signature hop notes.

Taste: Damn this is a fine DIPA with a twist. Sweet caramel and citrus with orange peel, and the others as noted in the nose. A noticeable pine bitterness at the back end and throughout the swallow with a drying finish. The rye is present with a notable spice also throughout the palate.

Mouthfeel: This has a medium body and a higher amount of carbonation. It's creamy and spicy at the same time and somewhat sticky.

Overall: Well FFF does it again! I really liked this offering from them and it most definitely has their signature all over it!

Enjoyed on tap at FFF. Served in a half pint.

A: Pours a clear golden yellow color with some amber hues. A fluffy white head recedes to a thin ring and leaves sticky sheets of lace behind.

S: Some rye earthiness and spiciness with a dash of fruity hops. Some nice citrus with grapefruits and oranges with a dash of sticky strawberry jam.

T: The taste is very much like the nose. Spicy rye with some citrus and sticky berry hops profiles. There is a touch of bitterness in the finsh as well.

M: Medium bodied with a sticky and oily mouthfeel. Medium carbonation with a bitter finish.

O: I definitely enjoyed this guy, but I found Rye'da Lightning a far superiour beer. I think it lost some of its drinkability with the imperializing of it. A good beer that I would like to have again, though.

The appearance is above average for the style: fine lacing, bright white head and red amber color which is transparent. There is some sediment at the bottom of the bottle that produces fish food in the glass.

The nose is excellent. There is predominantly tropical and citrus aromas from the hops and spicy malt from the rye. As the brew warms, the nose is dominated by the malt (both spicy and sweet) and alcohol.

The taste is rather average for a rye pale ale. I detect spicy malt and some bittering hops, but the alcohol bite cuts through. The alcohol disrupts the nice balance between the malt backbone and hops.

The feel is medium and provides some oily notes.

I am a big fan of Rye'd da Lightning, so I was excited to try this double version. If this brew can be made such that the alcohol does not push its way through the taste, then I'd give it a higher overall score. I think fans of Lightening should give this a try. However, this won't be a repeat buy for me.

A: Mango orange color, fairly cloudy with a frothy white head. Great retention and awesome lacing.

S: Tropical fruits, rye spice. Some sweet malts. It's got that classic hoppy tropical/grapefruit Three Floyds smell to it.

T: More sweeter in the taste then the nose. Again, its got that classic Three Floyds hop profile. More tropical fruits, big carmel malt backbone. Honey, orange, pineapple and really ripe grapefruit. A bit of rye near the end. Some earthy hops and a touch of onion. Finishes a bit sweet and a bit dry. Not overpowering in the hop bitterness at all, but they are there.

M: Fuller body, average carbonation. Feels fairly smooth.

O: Great beer. Great drinkability, not sure what the abv is, but it hides it well.

This poured out as a slightly hazy copper color, a nice sized sticky white head on top too. The lacing was pretty strong on this beer. The smell of the beer to me is a little funky, it's hoppy but it also has a minimal twang to it that is a bit off to me. The taste of the beer is big, it's got lots of hops, good malt base and solid bitter spicy finish. The mouthfeel of the beer is medium bodied, nice carbonated and oily. Overall it was a fun beer to have.

Pours a very hazy mango color with good head, retention and lacing. Juicy, tropical fruit aroma with somewhat sulfur-y notes. Tastes juicy, bitter, and flavorfully hop forward. I am pretty sure I wouldn't be able to identify rye if I drink this blind. Mouthfeel is medium, finishes clean and crisp with high carbonation. Has FFF written all over it.

Poured from a bomber into a MN renaissance festival goblet. Wow the aroma already is pungent with tropical hops, citrus and a rye spice, but I digress..it shows a billowing sisal colored head, creamy, over a golden hued beer. Incredibly persistent head with ropy lacing. The smell is fantastic..a dangerous rye edginess pervades an otherwise lucious grapefruit, orange, papaya and mango tropical salad. Taste. Outstanding. Mangos, pineapples, grapefruit pith, jabs of unrepentant rye spice intertwined with big hop bitterness. Did I mention I need a spoon to scrape the foam clinging to the inside of the glass? Rich, creamy, velvety mouthfeel. Malt settling in late to ease the bitterness just a shade. Finish is mildly bitter, juicy, spicy and clean. I may spread some of this creamy foam on a slice of pumpernickel for a quick snack. I don't know what sort of voodoo these folks at 3 Floyds practice, but they sure turn out amazing brews.

Looks like a DIPA, orange and beautiful!! A sweet looking white head that thins down. Lacing is fairly good.

FUCK ME this beer smells good! It's has a brutal spicy rye that punches you in the face with a bouquet of tropical fruits. This is the best smellilng beer I have had the pleasure to smell.

Again, the taste is just as good as the smell. The rye rapes you right away with a ton of tropical fruits to back it up. It's very bitter and hoppy, but not in a bad way. The bitterness is perfect and doesn't carry on too long. Unreal!!

Mouthfell is solid. Really carbed up and nice bitter aftertaste.

One of my all time favorites from any brewery!

S- An absolute ton and a great mixture of tropical fruits and spicy rye.

T- Exactly like the nose. Taste is really great. Everything goes very well together. Very outstanding brew.

O- One of the best DIPA I've had. This beer is outstanding.

Served in a Three Floyds shaped glass.

A: Poured out a fairly clear, golden color, with a slight chill haze and a bunch of suspended yeast. The head was about a finger or so and settled down after a bit. Awesome!

S: Smell of FFF signature profile right away: Grapefruit, orange, and pomegranate all wrapped up in a nice, neat, rye-infused package.

T: Candy-coated booze upfront, along with a substantial rye component that tried to compete with FFF's hop bitterness but couldn't. Still though, the rye contribution was just about perfect. I got most of it on the late, late aftertaste.

M: Perfectly carbonated, on the sweet side of the spectrum, but it was that "man candy," citrusy, sugariness that keeps people coming back for more and more. The lacing was substantial.

O: I've yet to try a single FFF IPA that didn't rock and this is no exception. One of the best of 2012 in my opinion!

I've had some doozies in my day, and am always looking for new IIIIPA's to try. This offering from three floyds was just about the best I've had (out of 100+ IPA-type brews). I didn't notice much rye, but there was a bit of spice as others noticed. Very fruity, sticky, and just awesome. I bought this down the street at Stoney's here in Indy after cashing in some of my grandpa's old coins (RIP R.M.!). I toasted to him, and enjoyed this amazing brew. Out on the porch, the sun shone through it and displayed amazingly evenly distributed particulates of.. I dunno.. hops? Couldn't say. Do NOT pass this beer up. I don't sign in to review many beers but this prompted action! My next action will likely be buying another bottle when I can.

Slightly hazy golden orange body with a dense white head and spotty lacing. Really nice looking color.

Smells of tropical fruit and citrus with a nice caramel sweetness. The spicey rye is barely perceptable in the smell.

Huge juicy tropical fruit and citrus hops, notably mango and orange. There's a healthy dose of pine and a peppery rye finish.

Medium bodied, good carbonation, and sweet.

Another delicious dipa from 3F, as to be expected.

It's pouring a hazy orange with over a 2 finger head of foam..I pulled it from the fridge about an hour ago.

The smell is all sorts of hoppy. Citrus, pine, volumes of tropical fruit pineapple is there for sure, and a nice spiciness from the rye. Overall, not overly bitter in the nose.

And then I taste it and all of what I've written is there as well as a very solid malty taste that adds just the right touch of sweetness. Wow, this is very tasty and I'm not getting much, if any, of a booze burn.

Full bodied with lighish carbonation, the mouthfeel is truly grand. Man, that rye really adds a great dimension to a DIPA. Thanks again, Tom! An awesome drinking experience is what I have here.
