Serving Type - 22oz bottle

Appearance - Dark orange yellow/burnt tan with a monster 3+ inch head and tons of sticky lacing.

Smell - Very tropical fruity, mango, peach, pineapple, grapefruits, oranges. Some nice smooth rye comes out also.

Taste - Big tropical hops right at first sip. Lots of mango, mellon and oranges. The rye comes out moreso after the first hit of hops but not as much as i figured. . Not overly bitter, really smooth and sweet. Alcohol is masked well, but there is a minor warmth at the finish.

Mouthfeel - Tons of hops coat tounge with tropical sweetness. The palate gets more hops and some of the rye. The finish is sweet, and rye, with tonge left a little bittered.

Overall- Another world class ipa from 3 floyds. Alot sweeter and smoother, and less rye then i expected. Unique flavors, very tasty, wow. A little pricey but worth the treat, as good as any other ipa they make, this is a must try.

Three Floyds' trek across hops and rye have culminated in Rye'da Tiger- A highly citursy, strong India pale ale with the husky spice of rye; and is all tied together with caramel, biscuit, and more pungent hops. It's a masterful blend that takes recipes like Dreadnaught and teases us with unexpected nuances.

The beer casts a amber-orange and slightly rusty hue,. The beer glows softly through its hoppy and unfiltered haze when back lit. Capped with a fluffy white head that liquifies as it condenses, its stubborn staying power laces the glass with broken strands of foam that provide an artistic, ribbon-like display.

Perfumy and earthy aromatics create a vibrant scent of orange blossom, ripe grapefruit, freshly zested tangerine, mango puree, spruce, and chives. The complicated scent weaves together with impressions of grain husk, pepper spice, bread crust, and caramel. The zesty ale seems both rustic and delicate all at the same time.

Medium caramel sweetness is met by hearty whole grain flavors, light biscuit, and a earthy zeal that seduces the early palate. Shortly after, the citrus, tropical, and earthy hop flavors take turns offsetting the grain sweetness with flavors of ruby red grapefruit, fresh squeezed orange juice, pineapple, apricot, papaya, chives, resinous pine, and crushed grasses and herbs. Earthen rye flavors carry an inherent peppercorn, crusted bread, and buckwheat taste that carries the vibrant hop flavors into a semi-dry malt taste and cleanly bittered finish.

Creamy and dry textures reside along side of each other, just as a malty meringue of carbonation and fruit gives an semi-sweet/semi-dry culmination. Its non-astringent rye spice is utterly unheard of with rye beers, but introduces minty-warm alcohol, resinous dryness, and clean earth flavors in aftertaste.

I hate to say "dirty", but the Rye'da Tiger seems to be a slightly lighter flavored, dirtier Dreadnaught. Dirty with both the husky rye flavor and feel, nutty malts, and grassier hops- but the soul of that famed imperial IPA is alive and well behind these special additions.

Poured from a bomber into a tulip. It pours out a beautiful hazy orange and yellow color very reminiscent of a Belgian Wit. There are 2 fingers of nice rocky head with outstanding retention. The nose is wonderful. Nice big tropical fruits like peaches, lemons, oranges, and grapefruits.

Wow, this beer has terrific flavor. It's really well-hopped, but not as wonderfully bitter as Dreadnaught. I definitely detect the rye on the tongue and that woody, earthy rye spiciness really comes through (if it was heavily-hopped, it might not). The beer has a nice, slick, creamy feel and there's a good deal of fruity sweetness underneath the rye and hops. I even get a bit of rye on the finish which, like all FFF's IPAs, is dry, appetizing, and lingering.

An incredibly well-balanced and well-constructed beer. So glad I got to try this. It's probably even better when it's super fresh. This is one I will drink again if given the opportunity. Highly recommended.

This was my favorite new beer of the Super Bowl Party this year. Drank after a Zombie Dust. Remarkably similar beer, just of greater degrees of ingredients (more, rye). But anyways, this is supposed to be about the appearance first, so without further ado:

Poured out a hearty orange liquid, 1" off white head, looks professional quality. Aroma, big time amarillo, citra and simcoe I would guess, its delicious for sure.

Taste, damn, three floyds can make some damn good hoppy beers. Alcohol warming, but not providing a negative flavor component. Hops are bright and shiny. Plenty of citrusness to it, tangerine I think is the biggest one, it isn't big and tropical fruit, this is sweet orange and tangerine. Rye is barely perceptible, which is fine by me. Pretty dry mouthfeel. What FFF does so well is make their beer hoppy, but you never get the bitterness unaccompanied by other flavors. This is hop flavor all the way with little in terms of that copper penny bitterness and nothing else that so many shortcutting brewers seem to be all about (high alpha acid, thin crystal malt = ugh more often than not).

A Jefferson Starship song comes to mind... Anyway, this stuff pours a hazy brass-gold topped by over a finger of cream-white foam. The nose comprises honeydew, light grapefruit peel, light cilantro/leek, and a very light dash of rye spice. The taste brings in more of the same, with the cilantro/leek character happily subdued and some pine sap, pine needle, light cedar, and light honey coming into the mix as well. The body is a light-leaning medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a drying finish. Overall, a rather nice and tasty rye DIPA, though one that doesn't seem to make efficient use of the rye. Still, good times.

Lets keep this one simple as I expect this to be in the top 250 beers before long.

L. The density of this is amazing, you can see yeast suspended in mid pour, huge bright orange body, and a nice white head that left a lot of lacing. A damn impressive double IPA look.

S. Rye bitterness dominates, giving way to sharp citrus notes and tropical fruits.

T. Make broo doo more intense and add a huge amount of rye bitterness and you've got this beer. Wow this is just damn amazing. So bitter but it's that rye flavor anyone having this is hoping for, but the three floyds malt and hops behind it.

M. Ok this is hot and bitter. It seems to work better than the sum of parts if you will.

O. Hoprod rye, you have a challenger. This is amazing beer....period end of story.

Just getting into IPAs and this one is right up my alley. Very floral nose of hops. A light-colored, non-hazy beer. Easy on the tongue with a bit of stronger hops in the aftertaste. But the sweetness of the hops calms it down before overwhelming my tastebuds. I would definitely order or buy again.

Pour cloudy yellow orange with a small puffed up white head. Slight lacing down the glass.

Aroma is sharp rye notes, citrus and pine. A bit of grapefruit zest and bread in the background.

Big grapefruit rind and other citrus flavor up front. A little earthy and bready before finishing with a rye-resin 1-2 punch.

Medium body and carbonation. Finishes pretty bitter.

Not too bad, but the flavors were a bit muddled. I enjoyed Rye da Lightning more. The extra hops seemed to overwhelm the rye to provide more flavor harshness and less of the wonderful citrus explosion with a hint of rye of its little brother.

From 01/25/12 notes. Brought this back from Chicago a few days ago, bought it from the store around the corner from Hopleaf for $13.99. 22 oz. bottle poured into my Bell's tulip.

a - Pours a hazy yellow-orange color with one finger of fluffy white head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of rye, citrus hops , tropical fruits, fruity malts, grapefruit, mangos, floral hops, some bready malts. Rye is prevalent in the nose, but a ton of tropical fruits and citrus hops as well. Really nice.

t - Tastes of grapefruit, citrus hops, fruity malts, rye, tropical fruits, lemon, floral hops, earthy notes, and some pineapple. More citrus here and less rye, but still very hoppy and awesome. Taste has some moderate bitterness to it, but not too much considering the ABV.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. Some moderate bitterness bite in the mouthfeel.

o - Overall a really nice rye DIPA. Rye is up there in the nose and lots of citrus and tropical fruits throughout. Would definitely have it again.

A: Pours a translucent brass with a puffy white head. Great retention.

S: Resinous pineapple, clementine, and grass aromas pop out immediately, followed by some sweet crystal malt.

T: Oily, piney bitterness, lactose-like sweetness, mango and grapefruit, more pine, lightly spicy rye, floral. Dank.

M: Medium-bodied with active carbonation.

O: The use of NZ hops in this beer is fantastic - very resinous and fruity. Could have used a bit more rye but perhaps it was covered up by the hop spiciness.

Half pint at FFF

A - slightly hazy light orange brown in color with a nice clean white head. nice head retention with fine sticky lacing.

S - tons of citrus, grapefruit, orange peel, a touch of rye and maybe pepper.

T - more citrus than even in the aroma, huge grapefruit and orange, maybe a touch of pineapple. a slight biscuit taste with a bit of spice near the finish?

M - carbonation is just right, slightly creamy with a medium body, there is a slight bitter aftertaste.

O - I liked this beer. My impression is its a slightly less balanced Dreadnaught, to the hoppy side with the bit of spice. Would have liked to get more than 1 bottle when I bought it. Will just have to enjoy it again on tap at FFF.

Poured into a snifter

Appearance: Transparent somewhat deep honey orange with a one finger white head. Also, two thick ring lacing's.

Aroma: Juicy grapefruit, apricot, mango, and a little pineapple. Floral. Some spicy rye.

Taste: Very similar to the the smell. Grapefruit, apricot, and mango. Some spicy hops. Rye and its spiciness throughout. Some malty sweetness. Rye and hops in the aftertaste. Some alcohol warming.

Mouthfeel: Slightly over median bodied and median carbonation. A little sticky. Hops bitterness is actually light but lingers for five minutes at the most. Finish is slightly dry.

Overall: I really enjoy this beer but would enjoy it more if it had more rye. If it had more rye, I would give taste a five. I consumed this beer well over an hour. Like most beers, it gets better as it warms, especially the rye. I would definitely have this again.

A: Semi-hazy bright orange with a towering 3 fingers of beautiful foam.

S: Huge aroma of candied mango and tropical fruit with a little bubblegum. Amazing.

T: Follows the nose with lots of dank, juicy tropical fruit, a bit of pine and some sweet bready malt. I love this flavor profile. Bright, vibrant, sweet and refreshing.

M: Crisp, slightly chewy and smooth.

Overall, this is one of my new favorite Imperial IPAs. I wasn't sure any thing could top Pipework's Citra Ninja but this comes pretty close. I can't find a bad thing to say about this beer. I tend to think 3 Floyd's is a bit overrated but this is a masterpiece.

Pours a slightly reddish orange with light layer of white head. Nose is chock full of ripe grapefruit, pine hops, and slightly spicy rye. Notes of lemon sneak in as well. Taste is somewhat sweet and malty with a nice bright fruity flavor that pairs nicely with a slightly spicy and bitter hop character. Mouthfeel is light to medium with moderate carbonation. Overall, another delicious hoppy brew from Three Floyds. Worth seeking out.

A-Cloudy amber orange, two finger head with some lacing.

S-Starts with rye spiciness, then a bouquet of citrus (orange and lemon) hop notes. Along with some floral.

T-Rye spices to begin with. Then a wave of citrus, orange and lemon again, some grass with nice bitterness in the finish.

M-Medium bodied, nice carbonation and hop resins.

O-A really good DIPA, the rye enhances it and is a nice touch.

A: Poured a glowing murky orange with a one finger bright white head. Oh wait, I see chunkc floating around, big ones.

S : Huge tropical citrus and fruit notes with some slight pine in the background. The rye was light on he nose

T: Intial rye preys on the taste buds, Some grapefruit, pineapple and some pine follow. The rye spices things up a bit midtaste but not to overpower the truckload of hops providing more tropical fruits and sweetness. It finishes dry with a strong tropical fruit backbone. Some slight rye also fades away in the background of the finish.

M: Full bodied IIPA, well carbonated, dry, lingering sweetness with bombs of fruitiness andsubtle pine

O: Very good, no major complaints. I wanted a little more rye though.

22oz bottle poured into a FFF Teku glass. From the most recent December/January 2012/13 release.

Rye'da Tiger pours a lovely bright copper color, hues of orange and gold, somewhat cloudy, lots of sediment floating in the glass with a few bubbles rising up from the bottom. A nice, thick, cloudy, white head rises out of the beer, nearly 2 fingers high, tightly packed bubbles that has great retention and leaves behind a large network of soapy lacing. The aroma is superb, bright citrus with light subtle floral notes, resinous pine and some earthy grass lead to sweet pale grain and a bit of fusel alcohol. Bright citrus hits the tongue, grapefruit with lighter tangerine, lovely floral notes come out with a big burst of sticky, oily pine and bitter, earthy notes of grass and weeds, prickly rye is apparent with some sweet grain and strong astringent alcohol. The body is somewhat oily and soapy, medium carbonation, coats the mouth well and has a slightly dry finish with a touch of alcohol bite.

Verdict: A wonderful Imperial Rye IPA from Three Floyds. The hop profile is so bright and vibrant, really shows off the freshness of the beer, the rye is a subtle touch that adds a nice bit of complexity and while this is certainly a boozy beer, the alcohol is never that much of a distraction, a very worthy IPA for any hop head.

I'm thinking of Ronnie right now, specifically Rainbow-era shit.

Had this this twice in the the last few days, once on tap and now the bottled version. Going to attempt an awkward consolidated format review, as that's what the current fashion dictates. Looks like a He-Man powercat on the label... yesss.

Huge creamy head of white foam, leaves sheets of lace all down the glass. Murky orange otherwise.

Dank aromas of tropical and citrus fruit, mango, tangerine, grapefruit medley all up in your area. Chewable sweet tarts. Initial whiff of bubblegum yeast esters.

Smooth delivery and only the slightest nuance of booze to the skull. Extra fruity with and enchanting arrhythmia of sensory flavors akin to Pee-Wee's Playhouse. Still listening? Ok. Lots of citrus peel, earthy mango, apricot sweetness, dry and mildly bitter aftertaste. Squarely kicks the hop craving right over the horizon.

22 oz. bottle poured into a Founders snifter.

Appearance: Pours a slightly cloudy pale amber with a huge fluffy white head. Good head retention. Leaves a nice lacing down the glass.

Smell: Citrus and floral hops with a big dose of rye spiciness up front. Some biscuit and caramel malts peek through. Same great in-your-face hop profile that Three Floyd's seems to always bring.

Taste: Sweeter than expected. A good balance between caramel malt and floral/grapefruit hops infused with rye spiciness. Finish is a bit floral with more caramel and rye balanced by bittering hops. The rye works brilliantly with the hop profile. Excellent.

Mouthfeel: Medium to heavy body for the style. Rye makes it a bit chewy. Carbonation level keeps at least somewhat crisp despite the thickness.

Overall: One of the best rye beers I've had, and I love my rye beers. Strong rye presence, great hop profile (no surprise coming from Three Floyd's).

Bomber poured into a Duvel tulip.

If you are a 3 Floyds fan, you will like this beer. I am a fan, so I do enjoy it.
It has all the earmarks of their offerings: Great head retention, citrus-like aroma,
and lingering bitterness. Yes: rye spice to boot. It's rusty orange, with plenty of sediment.

Many of the 3F hop-forward offerings taste similar to me, and I like most of them.
Solid offering: hoppy, balanced, and offers a twist with the rye. Not quite as complex as D'naught, but worth a try. I like it more than the "Lightning" version. Looking forward to Boru in a month or so!

Aroma pretty straight forward for me-hop flower, pink grapefruit and papaya.

This turns into a hop bomb! Big and bold! Definite caraway, white pepper, burnt caramel, honeyed biscuit and grapefruit pith. Like chewing on a hop head. Beautiful lacing.

Mouthfeel is semi sticky and pleasant hop aftermath.

Another FFF masterpiece. Nothing to prove, but again showing what an exceptional brewery they are.

A - Clear amber, orange with a fluffy white head and patchy lace.

S - Grapefruit, orange zest, spicy rye and tropical fruit.

D - I saw a review call this man candy and I can't argue with that statement. Hoppy but with enough sweetness. I don't think 3F can do a bad hoppy beer.

Bomber poured into a tulip

A- Pours slightly hazy golden orange with a two finger of a slightly off white head. Noticeable alcohol legs.

S- This beer is a citrus BOMB. There is a ton of pineapple, mango, oranges and a slight pine on the nose. Not much rye, if any but a very sweet malt backbone.

T- Not as much of an intense bitterness at first but a huge hop flavor. This is again, a citrus bomb. There is more pineapple, mango, lemon and pine then I know what to do with. There is also a nice bit of of a herbal hop note and an ever so slight spice from the rye. Malt flavor is not very existent on their own but they do back the hops quite well and extenuate the hop flavors, which are this beers main focus.

M- Not as palate destroying as I was expecting but a hopped up beer never the less. A slightly spice and incredibly fruity aftertaste. Drinks quite easy and keeps you wanting more.

O- Like many of 3F beers, it isn't quite what you would expect from the style but as a hop head, I don't really care.

From a 22 ounce bomber.

A. Yellowish amber appearance with a nice three finger, pillowy white head that recedes slowly. Laces like the dickens. Nearly perfect.

S. Mango, pineapple, pine, hop oils and bready grain. Nicely done.

T. Complex fruity entry of pineapple and citrus. Hop bitterness, pine and rye pokes through on a fairly long finish.

M. Medium bodied with nice carbonation.

O. A very enjoyable and drinkable beer from FFF. This stuff is fresh and it really shows. I need to grab another bottle before this disappears. Highly recommended.

Presentation: Big thanks to Brydeen for this bomber bottle. Chilled and poured into my Dogfish Head tulip.

Appearance: Bright orange in color. Maybe a touch cloudy but pretty clear for the most part. Pours a nice, white, creamy, two finger head with good retention. Leaves a nice lacing all along the glass.

Aroma: Really nice pineapple and tropical fruit sweetness. A touch of bitter pine as well. A touch of a bready tone as well. Really nice fruity and citrusy tones throughout.

Taste: Tons of citrus and pineapple tones from the hops. A lot more on the tropical and citrus side than pine, but there is a touch of pine bitterness at the end. An interesting, spicy, slightly bready note at the end from the rye.

Mouthfeel: Surprisingly crisp and refreshing upfront. There's definitely some body to this beer but its drinks very light.

Overall, a really crisp and refreshing double IPA. The rye does add a nice dimension and mixes well with the sweet tropical tones from the hops. Really drinkable and tasty considering the ABV. Definitely a nicely made beer.
