Notes:
Now this is a saison! This refreshing Belgian-style ale is the combined effort of Three Floyds and De Molen’s fantastic brewer Menno (the real Dutch Hercules). This spicy and bracing ale was brewed in Munster, but look out for the one we brew in Holland at DeMolen. Cheers and drost!

Bomber poured into a FFF Teku glass. Looks a lot like gumballhead except for the thicker white head; the marigold orange is a bit surprising for a saison, but hopefully the aroma and taste will bring me back around.

Hmmm... dry-hopped with amarillo? There is some spicy white pepper, alcohol, lemon, and grapefruit on the nose, but the hop-forward quality is sort of building what I am starting to expect this to be: a very FFF take on a saison - a bit maltier and hoppier than I had originally anticipated. The flavor no longer takes me by surprise - a bit sweet, malty, strong on the citrus hops, a strong kick of alcohol, some peppery bite but not much. Although I'm not surprised now, I am a bit disappointed - it's lacking in the dry, light drinkability that I tend to go for in a saison and instead is a bit heavy, sweet, and not dissimilar enough from some of FFF's normal lineup of (delicious) hoppy ales.

Overall it's probably something some folks would really get behind, I'm gonna stick to the FFF brews that they excel at when I want a more hop-forward drink and get my saison fix elsewhere.

Notes from a review on 11/30/12

This is the biggest 'saison' in every way. It pours a completely opaque hazy gold/orange with a great white head made up of mostly small, tight bubbles. The aroma is very yeast/cereal like with HUGE citrus hops - ripe grapefruit and mango, orange juice. The tastes follows the nose - very bready but also very bitter from a strong hop presence. Just crazy huge citrus hops.

This is a fantastic beer - don't know if I would call it a saison, but more of a DIPA with saison ingredients.

Consumed 4/7/13

Cheers to Goblinmunkey7 for sharing this beer

Appearance: Somewhere between deep, dark orange and light amber - hazy, cloudy - nice, big, white head - leaves a nice cap and a wall of lacing

Smell: Very fruity and very sweet, in a fruity way - yeasty, earthy, dirty basements - musty, with some rotting/rotted fruit - doesn't smell much better as it warms up - like, moldy melons

Taste: Funky and fruity - flowers, dirt, and a damp, wet basement - yeasty, with some yeasty spices, like clove - sweet fruit, orange peels, grapefruit peels, melon rind, and some rotted fruit - some caramel malts, some herbal bitterness

Mouthfeel: Medium body, nice carbonation, sticky, rotten aftertaste

Overall: No no no

I'm almost inclined to think (hope) this is infected because there's something here that seems genuinely rotten. There are some nice funky, herbal, fruity notes here, but it doesn't really come together, and it disappoints overall.

Split with angrybabboon.

Appearance: Deep burnt orange. Head is bright-white loose and rocky. Drops to a clumpy cap and collar. Some small ropes of lacing. Moderate carbonation on the pour.

Smell: Tons of orange. Flesh and pith and zest. Sweet. Bready with some mild funkiness. Fruity esters. Some pear and tangerine. Pineapple and grass. Earthy. Hoppier than expected. Underripe peach. A bit mealy. Hints of alcohol. Aggressive for the style. Sweet syrupy toffee booze. Lots of sugary sweetness.

Taste: Sweet candied peaches and nectarines. Lots of orange flesh and juice. Caramel, toffee, And some brown sugar. Strong punch of citrus from.the hops. Ripe melon. Big malt backbone is biscuit with a good caramel malt sweetness. Sharp bite of alcohol on the finish. Crazy boozy and sweet. Some Belgian yeast spice. Touches of clove and banana. Floral. Slightly toasted.

Mouthfeel: Slick and just in the under side of full. Moderate carbonation. Wet and juicy. Relatively clean finish.

Overall: Meh meh meh.

About what I expected. Crazy sweet and aggressive. That's what these two breweries do and that's what they did.
