Behold! The fifth collaborative effort of Three Floyds and Mikkeller. This complex ale is just the beverage for canal boat trips in Copenhagen or the brutal Chicago winter. This year’s offering will be brewed in both Europe and in Chicago. Look for both editions and the subtle differences in each. Cheers and thanks for supporting craft beer.

Had on tap at Stout Barrel House. Served in a snifter.
A: Pours a solid apricot color with a thin white head head forming on the pour. It recedes to a thin film that leaves some sticky sheets of lace.
S: Candied oranges and tangerines with a sweetened cereal grain malt body balancing it out. Nice lemon and lime zest to give a bit of kick. This smells like a big DIPA as opposed to a barley wine.
T: The taste is much more malty and yeasty than the nose. Some sweet candied sugar with a grainy malt sweetness make up the body with some yeasty chalkiness that provide some fruity esters. More lemon zest like the nose with some bitter orange peel as well.
M: Medium bodied with a malty body and a medium low carbonation level. Slightly drying as well.
O: This was solid overall, but it didn't quite know what it was. The nose was extremely fruity and the taste was much more malt forward.

Pours a clear golden color with a frothy inch and a half cream colored head that lingers.
Floral hops and pine dominate the aroma initially, with sharp citrus notes of grapefruit and pineapple leading into a dank, resinous finish. It's a hop explosion!
Flavor reveals more fruity hop character, with sour orange, grapefruit, lemon, and mango underlying a lightly bready backbone. The finish is fairly dry, with notes of resin and grass adding character. There's a touch of bitterness.
Body is moderate to full, but the relatively high carbonation lightens the mouthfeel. Alcohol warmth is substantial.
Overall, a hop bomb of a beer loaded with complex aromas. The flavor is excellent, albeit slightly less complex.

On tap at the pub (or crazy house as I like to call it! :) )
Brought a few bottles home like normal.
Shit is good! Damn, good.
Happy to stop in for a snack at lunch and see this Mikkeller collar on tap, well that and got the first bottle of Moloko as well!
A: looks delicious. golden clear pour with a 1/2" head to stick your nose into
S: Jumps out at you. Barleywine? No. Three Floyds Barleywine yes. I say that because I'm not a barley wine fan yet. This one is citrus, orange, grapefruit and hops. Consistent with FFF.
T: grapefruit citrus off the bat. The malty sweetness comes immediately after, then hops to finish it off. It seems to linger in your palate wanting you to take another sip. At 10.4, a sip is good at lunch time!
M: standard carbonation. Smooth and tastey. As expected
O: Wow, didn't think I'd be that head over heels for this one. BooGoop was good, but not even close to RisGoop. This is my style. Call is a Barleywine, call it a IPA, call it whatever you want. This shit is good! Didn't i already say that! :)

A: single finger head on a clear golden with slight copper hue. Very nice lacing.
S: Very floral ad citrus. Excellent hop character and range of aromatous hops.
T: light on the malts with full array of hops included with floral and citrus dominating with subtler earthy and herbal flavors. Mild pine and sour citrus in the finish.
M: medium body and moderate carbonation.
Overall: Exactly what you would expect from these two breweries; a complex and flavorful brew. A must try.

Enjoyed from the tap at the Three Floyds Brewpub and served in a snifter.
The brew is a clear, deep golden with a touch of amber adorned with a one finger bright white head. The head is present as long as some brew remains as well as abundant web-like lacing. The nose is filled with citrus and flora and certainly is reminiscent of other FFF brews. Orange blossoms, juicy grapefruit, and bitter citrus rind are dominant. Milder notes of fresh cut grass and a touch of pine fill out the aroma. Opens with grapefruit rind and a blast of juicy citrus hops however the bitterness is immediately met by a light sweetness and velvetly malt which heads off the bitter bite. Instead of overt bitterness the tastebuds are treated to a long lasting juicy tangyness that slowly relents in the finish which is silky smooth and ends fairly dry. The mouthfeel is very unique as a heavy malt backbone is present, yet the density seems lighter than it should be. Extremely creamy and absolutely no hint of the high 10.4% abv. Enjoyable, a very unique brew.
Note: Having had the bottled version as well, I would suggest trying both versions as there are some distinct differences which led to slightly different experiences.

On tap at the FFF brewpub.
From the menu;
Behold! The fifth collobarative effort of Three Floyd's and Mikkeller. This complex ale is just the beverage for canal boat trips in Copenhagen or the brutal Chicago winter. This year's offering will be brewed in both Europe and in Chicago. Look for both editions and the subtle differences in each. Cheers and thanks for supporting craft beer. 10.4 % ABV. $9 snifter.
Well... That's a pretty useless menu blurb if you're looking for info about the flavor profile... But here we go.
Clear, honey-touched golden body with some orange hues. Ecru head of one fluffy finger. Great retention and nice lacing.
Not a lot of malt presence on the nose-- perhaps some crystal? I know this is brewed with rice, but I can't find it in the aroma. Smells hoppy though-- and some booziness coming across as well.
The flavor has a light sweetness up front, then dries out, shows off some big bitterness, and finishes dry and boozy. The hop flavors aren't nearly as prominent as the hop bitterness, but some floral and spice notes come through... Perhaps just a hint of citrus as well.
Feels pretty hefty-- ample carbonation though. Firm body with an oily lingering sensation.
Overall-- not the best from Munster... In fact, this is the worst of this collab series... Still, it isn't bad, it's just that perhaps my expectations were too high, or maybe I was hoping for a flavor wallop! This seems too boozy and bitter, and riceay have been a poor choice (to be fair, what else is left? They've done oat, wheat, rye, and rice?!)

ok so i was lucky enough to find this in my hometown, and i wasn't sure if $20 would be worth it.. and i was right, i probably wouldn't buy this again at that price.
A: golden hue with a white fizzy head.
S: citrus, hops, dryness.
T: very smooth for the amount of hops you can smell. taste is excellent.
M: sort of dry, fizzy, hoppy.
O: this is a great brew, like i said the price would keep me away from it again. $20 is a bit steep for what you get but if you have the chance to sample it then go for it because it has a great flavor and smell.

Thanks to CuriousMonk for the trade. Cheers!
Appearance: Puors a thick orange/yellow egg yolk with a thin two finger head that dissipates rapidly to whispy one finger cloudy white head.
Smell: Belgium yeasts and some citrus
Taste: Wow this is nice and crisp and super refreshing beer. I cant believe it is 10.4% I want to drink this on a boat in the sun. Ok, so the taste. Sweet yeasty taste up front with some hops in the end. There are some citrus notes, orange peel, slight lemon peel.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a nice thick lasting finish on the tongue. slight dryness in the very end, most likely from the hops.
Overall: Not sure of the style but this is great. it says rice beer on the label but I thought it was supposed to be a bwine. Anyways, this is a really nice beer that is easy drinking and nice yummy subtle notes that keep it on point. Cheers

22oz bottle poured into a 3F pint glass
A: Golden color with a one-finger head that lingers for quite some time; noticeable carbonation
S: You can smell the pine hops from a mile away. As your nose gets closer there's also notes of citrus, grass and a multitude of florals
T: A strong hop bitterness up front, but there's a lot of malt underneath; lightly roasted with a bit of toffee. Also a distinct orange note as others have mentioned, particularly on the fairly lengthy finish
M: Pleasant carbonation that smooths out the bite from the hops; lingering finish
O: Another FFF winner, not much else needs to be said

Thanks to lurchingbeast & CaptCleveland for both dropping bottles of this in boxes. 22 oz. bomber split with my wife to kick off a nice, post-work Friday evening of cooking ribs & Breaking Bad. Or is that breaking ribs & Cooking Bad. Anyways.
Pour is orange that the eye is not able to see through. The nose is akin to walking through the flower section of a farmer's market: heady floral scent with a tropical bent. Barely discernible is a brash pine hop, but it's there.
Risgoop reminds me of something I can't quite put my finger on. This might be better tagged as an orange barleywine, because there's an orange orchard dripping down my throat after the first swig. Then a surprisingly strong hop presence, mirroring the nose, white pine, then grapefruit, & other sweet, light fruits. Odd malt sweetness (the rice?) arrives late, along with an in-your-face hop bitterness that stings & sticks. I find myself reaching for the glass frequently to find out what's going to come out of the liquid next. Intriguing.
Ignores the stylistic invisible fences, which I appreciate, but this veers wildly into IIPA territory with the huge malts & pummeling hops. Lovely complexity, excellent hopping, but a bit chaotic. Nonetheless, a very good beer.

Thanks to my great work friend Emily for picking this one up in the Elkhart region back a few months ago.
Served in a FFF shaped glass because they simply won't release those Goddam Teku glasses anymore.
A: Poured a slightly chill-hazed orange color, with a much bigger head than I was expecting. Beautiful beer, and very IPA-like for a Barleywine.
S: I smelled this bastard from the git-go. FFF hop profile upfront, citrus-orange, and with a DIPA disposition. Pretty self-explanatory.
T: Definitely more FFF than Mikkeller, freshly squeezed orange juice, candy-coated booze, and very streamlined grapefruit/bitter component on the finish. Remarkable.
M: The carbonation was perfect, some booze, but it was of the candy-like variety, and lotsa lacing that looked like suds in a bath tub.
O: Totally blown away by this. One of the best I've tried in 2013 so far.

A - Pours a clear, bright orange with a 3/4 inch off-white, tan head with decent retention.
S - Very hoppy, lots of pine and orange citrus. Some sweet malt also.
T - Hoppy pine and orange, alcohol is noticeable, then some sweet candy-rice.
D - Medium carbonation and a light, but sweet body.
O - Hopped up and sweet. Rice is there, I kinda liked it.

Goop
Pours a hazed orange. 3 inches of fluffy white head. Tons of lacing.
The grassy hops accompany a slew of fruit stew. ABV is zorro.
Flavors are sweet as well as the suggested nose. The rice has offered a slight vanilla soy taste, similar to the soy milk poured in your cereal.
The mouthfeel here is the highlight. So creamy smooth with a light integration of carbonation. Creamy espresso.
Overall, I could do rice based brews for a while, as long as they stand up to this one

I see Three Floyds is going after the elusive Asian beer-drinker dollar with a rice beer…classic marketing strategy. I am both offended and impressed.
A: Pale amber orange body with a ton of haze – looks like apple cider. An eggshell head of chunky foam climbs to about a half-inch; not much in itself, but it is impressive how long it stands. Thick lacing all around.
S: White rice scents provide an overarching earthy tone. Unfamiliar, but not unwelcome. I never imagined I’d pair a barleywine with a rice dinner, but thick caramel and molasses notes lay out as the other big hitters of the nose – lots of dark sugars at play here. Brighter aromas of citronella, vanilla, and pear balance these scents, along with a light pineapple and mango flourish from the hops.
T: A sweet palate that maintains an appropriate balance at all times. First tastes are laid thick with honey, lactose sugar, and vanilla, but with the drying snap of resinous hops and mildly astringent rice tastes. At first, the hops give off a floral, grassy character, but that soon turns into a taste that’s slightly oniony – “pungent” would be a good word to describe it. Sustained aftertaste of caramel with a touch of dry, lemony hoppiness.
M: This is a big, sticky beer, one you can feel all the way down – and that’s even with all the stinging hops. I’d drink this one quick as opposed to cellaring it; after a few years it would probably be too thick to stomach. A little alcohol heat, but not much.
O: I don’t like a ton of residual sugars in my beer, so I’m not digging on this one too much. Still, this is an original idea in hoppy Three Floyds + Mikkeller style, so I’d pick it up if you have no qualms about spending about $20 on a rice beer. For me, it’s one and done.

A: Pours a glowing orange with a nice nice, fluffy white cap with some staying power. Even after a few minutes and a few sips the lacing and head on this persists.
S: Big tropical fruits, you can smell the sweetness on this and booze lightly stings the nostrils
T: A moderate amount of initial hop bitterness followed by tropical fruits-mango, pineapple with some sweet, stickiness and sharp, pungent booze. Finish is hot, lingering bitterness and sweetness. A bit sticky.
M: Well carbonated, hefty body on this, electrifying booze and fruits crush the palate and coat the mouth
O: This beer was fantastic in almost all aspects. Big nose, great appearance, taste and mouthfeel are on target. I would love to have more of this. Consensus was best beer of the night which included some great beers

Split with angrybabboon.
Appearance: Slight has on a dark gold body. Head is bright-white and drops to a small bubbly loose collar. Spots of lacing.
Smell: Loaded with orange and grapefruit. Bright fleshy fruit. Solid malt backbone. Sweet bready elements. Some peach and tangerine. Pale and sweet. Some pithy bitterness in the back. Sweet. Pine and grapefruit rind. A bit of snappy cracker. Vague herbal spiciness as well. Straight up booze.
Taste: Orange flesh. Pithy grapefruit. Loaded with pine. Malts are sweet and biscuit. Some thin clean pale maltiness. Leafy and herbal. A ton of hop aggression. Touches of mint. Pushes toward marmalade. Pale sweet malt. Crackers and biscuits. Floral, very floral. Spearmint and fruit preserves. So much orange. Undercooked dough. Cooked pale grains.
Sharp bit of alcohol on the back.
Mouthfeel: Juicy medium body. Moderate to light carbonation. Some astringency.
Overall: Uh, it's aggressive.
Better than Boogoop, but that's about it. Hoppy and sweet. Boozy.

Cheers to Goblinmunkey7 for sharing this beer
Consumed 1/19/13
Appearance: Hazy orange - white head, fades to nice wisp of a cap that sticks around, leaves some nice lacing
Smell: A rice barleywine? Honestly, this smells more like an IPA (win) - citrusy - orange, grapefruit, and some tropical notes including a ton of mango - malts are interesting - bread and some white rice - some pine, too
Taste: Citrus, rice, and bread - oranges, tangerines, and mango - oily pine - bitterness is low despite the hoppiness - lightly bready with some serious rice - a lot of booze and grass in the finish - decent balance overall
Mouthfeel: Full body, smooth, lightly sticky, nicely carbonated
Overall: Mad goop, yo
This is a very strange beer. Very hoppy, with a strong undercurrent of rice. It's reminiscent of a bizarre Asian cuisine.

22 oz bottle courtesy of Stephanie, thanks for mule-ing this back! Pours a hazed, light gold color with a bubbly white head, a few wispy strands of lace.
Nose is uber-hoppy, and reminds me of Zombie Dust. Sharp and leafy, with a biscuity malt. Grainy without a doubt and has an aroma of the dust around the crusher at the homebrew shop.
Taste is light bodied grainy sweetness with a nice shot of wheatgrass-y hoppiness. I find it to be more wheatwine than barleywine, its got a wheat tanginess to it along with a strong alcohol and the body is most definitely lighter than any other barleywine I have had. It is smooth though and the ABV is really well integrated considering what it is hiding behind. Tasty treat here, me likey.

Poured from bomber bottle into tulip glass. A hazy, cloudy orange color with a massive white head lacing around glass.
Complex aroma of hops with pine resin, orange, mango and some pineapple. Very little malt presence. Big in your face hops where aroma feels like I can eat the hops. Reminds me of Dreadnaught.
Taste is all hops and very similar to their other Doubles. Big bitterness, complex hop flavor. Some subtle sweet caramel notes. The rice malt gives smooth but cleaner and dry finish. It's very subtle versus the other DIPAs they make. I can't even tell the malt is there, the hops dominate. Total Cascade.
Heavy bodied beer as you would expect but very easy drinking. Hides ABV too well.
I didn't touch this beer for a while and thought I might not like it because of the rice build but it's very hard to tell the difference. Very creative and awesome beer. I love FFF.

Three Floyds & Mikkeller Risgoop
Appearance: This rice barleywine collaboration pours what looks like an IPA/IIPA. It is a slightly golden orange color with no evident carbonation. There is not much head, only a finger or so of white foam, and it is gone very quickly. The sediment is clearly there and creates a haziness, but it is not unappealing. There are no alcohol legs, and the lacing is nothing special, just like the rest of the appearance.
Aroma: There is lots of citrusy aroma here, with grapefruit and pink grapefruit dominating. Oranges are there, too. There is a faint, sweet toast/cracker malty smell, but the malt is mostly hidden. This basically smells like a Three Floyds beer, with nothing really standing out as unique. Still, the folks at Munster set a high bar so this is decent praise.
Taste: Three Floyds’ typical hop character comes through initially, which is immediately followed by a sweet, ricey, malty flavor, almost like horchata mixed with cajeta, the classic Spanish class drink. The rice is quite prominent, and it is actually welcome. The hops are rindy and bitter as well as grapefruity, lemony, and overall a citrus blast. Stop the presses, an intentionally adjunct beer that tastes good?! This definitely tastes nothing like a barleywine, however, so a half-point deduction needs to be asserted.
Mouthfeel: Not much to say here. The mouthfeel is medium, creamy, and the carbonation is perfect. The hops provide great astringency, and the finish is surprisingly dry. I would have liked some more syrupy feel, considering the style, but it is not unpleasant. The alcohol comes through in a very, very slight warmth at the tail end of the drink.
Overall: The rice adjunct really works well in capable hands. This beer is interesting tasting, but it really, really eschews style, even for the American persuasion of barleywine. Even Behemoth is not as ridiculously hopped as this beer. This is the first time I have been able to see what people are saying with Three Floyds overhopping their beers, and it really hurts the beer by throwing it more into the IIPA world and out of the barleywine world. Still, it tastes great for an IIPA, and that is really all that matters. 14.5/20

22 oz bottle, poured into a snifter.
A - Orange/amber color, about an inch of head, settles quickly.
S - Citrusy hop smell, reminiscent of FFF's IPAS/IIPAS.
T - Taste is also citrusy, with slight maltiness. I can't taste the rice at all.
M - Sticky, hop flavor coats the tongue.
O - Not what I was expecting, much more of a Double IPA than a Barleywine, a solid beer, but not too different from FFF's other hop bombs.

Honey-amber pour, slightly hazy, a small off-white head settled to a thick collar, leaving splotchy lacing on the glass. Fruity esters on the nose, caramel candy, slight earthy hop notes. More caramel candy in the taste, sweet overripe fruits, citrus zest, earthy hops, somewhat of a caramelized rice cake or caramel corn sensation, but that could just have been my brain processing the fact that this is a ricewine...or it could've been authentic. Medium body, medium carbonation, slightly oily, with a slightly drying finish thanks to the mild yet lingering hop presence. Alcohol was pretty well hidden, making this a pretty drinkable brew overall.

A- This beer pours a slightly hazy bright orange body with a gentle carbonation of tiny bubbles. There is a sticky antique white head that last and last
S- The blast of beautiful hops almost sting the nose with aromas of pineapple weed and pale green hop flowers that smell just pick of the bine.
T- The mellow creamy note blends to fresh pineapple weed and dandelion flower hop flavors finish to a dry mellow but full pungency that has some nice bitterness as it opens up.
M- This beer has a medium-light crisp texture with all the alcohol hidden somewhere.
O- This beer is lovely with lots of exploding hop aroma/flavor and a good depth to it aswell. There is no real bitterness and alcohol but just enough pungency to offset the floral character of the hops. I don't know where those 22 oz. went.

Aroma of sweat yet a wine taste. A big bubbly head and lots of lace. Gino’s bottle from 3 Floyds visit. A wild yeast strain, with bravo hops I think. Sweet and hoppy. A big mouthfeel, tangerine and grapefruit flavours. Not super drinkable.bee-aye 6600.
