Woah, spicyness ahead! Bottle 76/817.
Lemme make something clear right off the bat: spiciness is *not* a flavor. It's a sensation, and it's often overused to mask bad (or bland) flavors by lazy/incompetent chefs. When used properly, it augments the existing flavors to enhance the overall experience. We cook at home with habanero peppers almost every week because they are delicious; the spiciness they impart is merely a bonus we happen to enjoy. If you can't stomach intense heat like that (which is often a physical -- not mental -- limitation), do not drink Cognac De Muerte anytime soon. :)
Anyway, ancho chiles jump out in the aroma as green peppers and sweetness melt into the booze. Taste is dominated by chiles though, with relentless heat burning the back of my throat after each sip. Yikes, that is hot! Hard to notice the roast and cognac-y, fruity sweetness when the chiles overpower everything like this. Even for a guy with an above-average tolerance for spicy food, this is a little too hot after every sip. The heat distracts you from appreciating the delicious imperial stout underneath, and that stout is quite good.
If you have a bottle of Cognac De Muerte, sit on it for another ~6 months; the spiciness should subside dramatically by then. Still, I actually really like this beer, and that's truly surprising to me because although I love peppers in savory foods, I typically despise them in beers, desserts, and other sweet dishes. And that's a testament to how good the barrel-aged RIS underneath is.
Would love to revisit this in 6 months.

Thanks to a few people we were able to put together the entire vertical and almost all the BA variants. Lots of fun gents!
From a 750 into a snifter
2012 vintage
Bottle 203 of 817
APPEARANCE: Just like all the rest of them. Pours relatively clear for an imperial stout. Produces a small, one finger medium-looking head that quickly fades to a wisp and ring. Black body in the glass with some carbonation evident. Only a ring remains until the end and leaves no real lacing down the glass. A little too light a pour and an average head at best.
SMELL: Very scary. I'm sure they were going for this though. There's a hint of cognac and oak in there, but this is mostly chillies and leather, and not in a good way. I would definitely trade it in for what's behind door number 2 if I had a chance.
TASTE: Yikes! The chillies are just overpowering here. Not a nuanced approach at all, this is an all-out bomb. A hint of dark chocolate at the swallow as well, but this is just chillies and more chilles. Too hot and spicy for anyone but the most seasoned in this department. Undrinkable.
PALATE: Slightly lighter than the base beer, but still big enough. Just like the other DL variants as well. Medium body with medium levels of carbonation. Creamy enough, goes down fine and finishes rather sticky on the palate. Piles of chili heat drowns out the booze and heat, but the spiciness is just absurd.
OVERALL: This is for the people who seek out the hottest, most dominating suicide sauce for chicken wings. I understand the desire for extreme, but in this case, this is extreme gone wrong. Dominating, one-dimensional, painful, and emotionally scarring. Words like sadness, revenge, hurt, insult, disappointment, waste, anger, violence, etc., come to mind. I had a few sips and passed the rest off to my man Doopie, who personifies all the nouns above. Undrinkable drain pour.

750 mL bottle, red wax, Thanks Chris!
Pours a dark viscous, opaque dark milk chocolate with a trace light tan head. Aroma is slightly hot, with booze and green peppers and slight cognac sweetness, but overall it is surprisingly mild. Thick and syrupy body, covers the palate with a silky, smooth coating. Flavor starts with a strong cognac and rich malt chocolate presence before holy hell peppers! So hot and very little else is making sense to me midway through the palate and long into the finish.
