Hits the style. A strong ale of piney citrus grapefruit hops with a large floating mass of grain. Very hoppy, which raised the interest. Good drinkability, above average mouthfeel, suitably carbonated. Cloudy light brown coloured body, with large retained head. Surprisingly fresh aromas.A good find in Maine last August.
Further sample at Bar Volo, fresh. Good hoppy wheatwine.

A: Poured a cloudy deep orangish in color with crimson hues heavy internal carbonation, medium tan head that lasts, slightly hazy

S: Very aromatic, big citrus, orchard fruits, some buckwheat, sweet like sugar cookie and some light booze stings the nostrils

T: Reminiscent of the nose. Initial citrus, sweet syrupy and buckwheat which persists with some light heat and herbal notes come to fruition. The finish is a little sticky, a tad syrupy, sweetness

M: Very nice. Full bodied, well carbonated, sweet and sticky, loads of flavor sit on the palate.

O: A very good representatio of the style. I would def drink this again.

Pours slightly hazy orange to amber with slight bubbles and nice lacing.
Smell is grass/wheat and malt sugars with the alcohol bring up the rear.
Taste is nutty at first almost like almonds. Very sweet and malty and this one hides the booze pretty well.
You get the phenol feel right at the end and it makes the palate sticky to some extent.
Still this is a good beer from two great brewers but I think it needs more time to sit. The alcohol is almost too much.

Semi-cloudy, dark orange body with a very thick, very dense off-white head; sticky, clinging lacing on the glass. Heady, sweet aroma; light caramel and toffee notes. Sweet malt flavor, grainy and nutty; strong bitterness and excellent alcohol warmth. Medium-heavy body; sugary and smooth.

A spiffy little beer. Despite the buckwheat component, the beer exhibited a heavy brewing malt sweetness although the buckwheat probably contributes greatly to the slight nuttiness I taste. Super complexity and with an overall nice balance of features for such a bold beer. Nice collaboration beer for a unique and uncommon style.

A: poured an orangish brown in color with pale brown highlights and a thin head that left very little lacing sticking to the glass.

S: lots going on in the aroma but I managed to detect plenty of caramel, burnt sugars, toffee with maybe a little molasses, hints of orangy citrus, maple syrup quality, dark fruits and berry undertones/

T: The taste was just as complex as the nose consisting of lots of caramel, toffee, burnt sugars, molasses, maple syrup, hints of chocolate, plenty of heat from the booze, signs of nuttiness, a touch of orane citrus peel flavor, mild hoppy accents, and dark fruits.

M: the brew was full in body with moderate amount of carbonation which had a sweet, slightly fruity, boozy, dark fruity, nutty, and sticky finish.

O: very nicely done complex wheatwine that was a little to hot on the booze for my liking but was very delicious.

Fighting hurricane Sandy one barleywine at a time.

Deep, deep amber with a tight laced head. Thick drifts or retention throughout a couple refills.

Smells like syrupy lemon, grapefruit, orange cough drop. Or candied pineapple. Pretty much any combo of citrus or acid fruit and uber sweet sugar will work. Alcoholic.

Toffee, grapefruit and lemoncello. The caramel and citrus kinda tastes like a beery long island iced tea. Smells syrupy but the body is quite pleasant.

Nice. Still aggressive after almost a year in the cellar.

A - Cloudy orange pour with a white fizzy head. Decent lacing. Some carbonation is visible.

S - Scent of caramel malt, some citrus notes, and a bit of dry sherry. Has a boozy smell as it warms.

T - Strong malt flavor with a bite of sharp berries. Finish has a potent bite. Very sweet component to this.

M - Strong sipper that really goes well after a meal. I was glas to split the bottle with a few friends. This is not a style that I'd like to have too much of.

O - Enjoyable collaboration and well worth trying.

Poured from 750ml into tulip. Bought this back in January I think and its been sitting in my closet ever since...
Pours a deep burnt orange/copper with a good amount of thick foam. Very hoppy rye aromas, hints of sweet malts. Taste is very rye-like. Its sharp rye malts, bitter hops, resin, and stinging paint thinner feel; though there is some sweetness. I had really high hopes with this one, but it was just to sharp for me. I think this was my first wheatwine, so this may well be how it should taste, but regardless, this was slightly lacking in drinking enjoyment for me.

P:  A beautiful cloudy body of orange copper that displays a 2 full fingers of milky taupe head that lingers. 

S:  Fresh bursts of citrus sun drenched wheat, grapefruit, orange peel, mango, toasted caramel malt, barnyard must, dried hay and hints of fresh rolled oats. Once swirled a timid lacquer, and orange pinesol aroma hit the nose. Alcohol is sweet with a dash of spicyness. 

T/M:  Dark malts flood my palate, toasted caramel, toffee, charred wheat, and burnt orange bitterness to round out the complex flavor. Orange dark chocolate liquor filled candy is the most noticeable flavor profile.  The bitterness us a triumvirate array of tropical fruits, orange zest, grapefruit and pine resin. Fluffy mouthfeel, nice warming and a dry semi chalky finish lingering orange oil and pine resin. 

O:  A hop forward wheat wine that is loaded with complexity. Flavor changes drastically from cold to warm with it being much smoother once warmed. Hats off to Mikkeller &Three Floyd's for a deliciously well crafted treat.

A - Pours a deep, cloudy amber. Lovely 2 finger light caramel head. Great retention & lacing.

S - Hoppy on the nose with caramel, toffee & dry malts.

T - Hoppier than I expected from the style but it still has a lot of depth. Slightly sweet with lightly roasted malts and caramel. Hints of orange as well.

M - Medium body, not thick or cloying but has tons of carbonation.

O - Very enjoyable... I expect hoppy from 3F no matter the style of beer.

poured into a tulip glass.

Appearance: glowing orange witha slighly hazy body. Almost 3 fingers of an offwhite colored head. Crazy thick lacing sticking to everything it touches. Head drops to a nice thick cap.

Smell: Citrusy hops(grapefruit and orange zest), pine, pineapple, and tropical fruits. A hint of wheat malts.

Taste: No surprise here 3 Floyds brewed a hoppy beer. Lots of citrusy hops grapefruits, oranges, pine. I am getting a hint of honey sweetness and wheat malts.

Mouthfeel: on the high end of a medium bodied beer with moderate carbonation. The beer has got a little booze heat to it, but its not overstated in the beer and does not become distracting.

Overall: Its gotta be one of the better wheatwines that I have drank besides Founders 09 Nemesis. Really great collaboration with the gypsy brewers & 3 Floyds! I really want to try Rugoop now!

Have had this bottle since about January, bought at Rick's in Alexandria, VA for $14.99. Poured into my Duvel tulip from a 750ml bottle.

a - Pours a hazy orange-brown color with two fingers plus of fluffy light tan head and moderate carbonation evident. Leaves a tons of lacing on the glass.

s - Smells of Belgian yeast, grapefruit, lemon, buckwheat, citrus, toffee, and caramel malts. Nice mix of citrus and caramel.

t - Tasted of grapefruit, citrus hops, Belgian yeast, spice, bready malts, fruity malts, caramel malts, toffee, and citrus. More malts in the taste and less hops than the nose.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. Body is very smooth and creamy. Very drinkable; alcohol is not present here.

o - Overall a very nice wheatwine. Lots of citrus and lemon hops in the nose and nice caramel malts throughout. Definitely did not feel like 10.4% ABV. Would have it again.

Inch tall light beige fluffy head. Body is a murky dark orange color. Wonderful head retention and resinious, splotchy lacing. Beautiful looking beer.

Oranges, slight lemon zest.

Sweet citrus at first then heads into a more wheaty taste. Grapefruity/orange-tinged hops play a big part in BooGoop. Relatively clean finish for a wheatwine.

Full mouthfeel, medium carbonation.

One of the lesser boozy wheatwines I've had, which has always been my beef with them. This one excels in that regard.

Thanks to Bendurgin for sharing this nice tick! Poured into a chalice. The color is hazy light amber. There is a nearly perfect looking off-white head of about a half inch that has a lot of sticky lacing.

The aroma is hoppy to begin with. There is some nice caramel malt aroma to go with the hoppyness making a sort of caramel apple effect.

The taste has a nice caramel sweetness. Slight orange hop bitterness is in the finish; balancing out the sweetness.

This is pretty enjoyable. I like it.

Poured into a chalice. This one pours a golden straw color with a finger of fluffy white head. A bit of sticky lace.

The aroma has a nice forefront of grassy hops with some hints of sweet caramel in the background. Big malt backbone here with hints of toffee and caramel. Surprisingly hoppy finish giving this one a nice bitter edge.

The body is medium with good carbonation. Overall this one is not to bad. Certainly unique.

A: Pours a deep orange amber color. Big fluffy pillowy head. Off white. Looks like tons of bottom conditioning. Already leaving lots of sticky lacing. Some alcohol feet for sure.

S: Through the nose, I still got a ton of hop aromas. Lots of fruitiness actually. Mango. Papaya. Pineapple. Maybe that overripe peach is there. Then the nice bready malt sweetness. A buddy of mine described the smell like fresh baked soft pretzel, and I sort of do get that as it warms.

T: Pretty solid brew. Up front you get some bitterness on the tip of the tongue. Still a good amount of hoppiness in this one. Lots of sweet juicy fruit hops. Then in the middle of the mouth those delicious malts come into play. Don't know if it's the buckwheat, but it makes for a really pleasant flavor mesh with the hops. Still a good amount of bitterness on the back end of this one. It sticks with you. The ABV is dangerously hidden, don't taste it but I assume I'll feel it in the end.

M: it's medium leading to full. Really more in that medium DIPA range.

O: A- actually upset I waited this long on this.

750 ML poured into a snifter

A- This beer pours dark, dank amber brown. Its clear, but dark. It poured with a massive head off off white/tan bubbles, extremely dense and great retention. Nice lacing as well. An absolute beast of a beer.

S- I get a lot of hop bitterness and hop aromas. I have been sitting on this bottle for quite some time now so the hop aroma has faded and the hop character that is still around smells of age. There is pineapple, grapefruit, pine, overly ripened fruits. There is also a strong sweetness, a malty, sugary backbone that gives it a kick.

T- A huge bitterness up front, absolutely three floyd'ed. Hop flavors are extremely strong in here for the age. There is a ton of pineapple, and pine. There is some overly ripened grapefruit and apricot. Malt profile is sweet but still has some breaddyness to it as well as a nice feel which keeps it in check.

O- This is a beast of a beer but it's drinking easier then I had expected. The hop profile may have faded with age but the bitterness is in check, very much so. Carbonation is on par. Aftertaste is bitter, dry and hoppy.

M- An awesome beast of a beer. I wish I had tried it fresh because three floyds hops are out of this world. However, with the age I put on it, it drank quite easy. Look forward to the future of the "goop" family. Next time I will try to get one fresh and age another for about 2 years.

On the path of New Holland's Pilgrim's Dole and Founders Nemesis '09; this new wave of buckwheat heavy ale comes alive with the remarkably intense citrusy hop character.

A rather viscous pour looks like creamy corn syrup but with a tint of burnt orange and garnet. An eventual froth separates from the beer underneath for a very sturdy and dense retainage of mild yellowish foam that clings confidently to the glass.

Strong and surprising hop notes of grapefruit, oranges, pineapple, and and mangoes spring to the forefront just ahead of a candied scent of straight up caramel, cotton candy, and marshmallows. Strong alcohols present a light booze note that hides just behind the hops and gives the beer a rosy floral overtone throughout.

Strength is also the name of the game in taste, but this time the malty richness of caramel, maple, honey, confectioner's sugar and fruit flavored candies gives a palate a sweet coat with robust wheat breads, grain, and spicy rye-ish buckwheat. The full appreciation of malt is short lived as the mid palate provides an onslaught of hops that change the tone of the beer toward American barleywine territory in a hurry. Citrus and tropical fruit flavors battle it out with ripe red grapefruit pulp, tangerine zest, pineapple, apricot, mango, and passion fruit notes that plummet into a deeply resinous bittering that finishes the beer briskly, semi-dry, and somewhat refreshing.

Full bodied for sure as the protein rich wheaty quality clings onto the unresolved sugars and deeply embedded carbonation for an expansive mouthfeel that extends very deep into the finish. Even as the hop dryness and alcohol thinning works to dry the beer, the malts release very late to allow the hops to provide final bitter impressions that linger well into the next sip.

A memory that reminds me of pineapple upside down cake, tropical fruit juices, and pine sap continues to develop beer flavor well after the glass is gone. This is a masterfully crafted ale that delivers the obscure flavors that intrigue beer drinkers but with an excellent balance and execution to find familiararity as well.

A - Amber to copper, rose closer to rust, turbid and a enormous off white almost pink-tinted head.

N - Strawberry, grapefruit skin, lemon zest, lactic sourness; strong touch of esters and phenols, plastic, granny smith apple, juiciness, vinous, fresh mint.

T/M - Candied fruits, toffee, viscous and syrupy mouthfeel but a crisp and drying-tannin like finish; some vinous suggestions, grape skin, vegetal, herbal, rose hips, lavendar; whole lotta shit going on here.

D - This was such a pleasant surprise as I have not been overly blown away by wheatwines in the past. More akin to a nice barleywine but toes the line of refreshing.

consumed on 7/19, while I was "on Hiatus." picked up locally. shared with my wife, enjoyed from a mikkeller wine glass and a FFF teku.

a - brew poured a deep murky orange brown with a finger plus of foamy, almost IPA looking head. lacing was chunky and left lines on the glass.

s - big toffee with some nice hop presence. smells like a nice american barleywine.

t - boozy toffee caramel with some nice hopping...again, very american barleywine. wheaty.

m - tingly. lots of carbonation...prickly.

o - overall, this is a really nice beer. my wife dug it too. very impressed, wish it was still on shelves, would love to nab another bottle.

A: Deep red orange in color, heavy internal carbonation, medium tan head that lasts, slightly hazy

S: Moderately fragrant, complex nose with heavy citrus and dark fruits, some apple, light alcohol

T: Much reminiscent of the nose, dried fruits citrus, some herbal elements, even hints of what seems to be black licorice, powerful, mild alcohol

M: Incredibly smooth, melts in the mouth, quite strong, almost overpowering, slightly drying and lingering, citrus aftertaste

O: An excellent example of the style, great flavor, complex nose, smooth and an amazing appearance, a must try

750mL shared by a buddy. Served in an oversized snifter. 

Pours a cloudy burnt orange with two and a half fingers dense yellowish head. Plenty of lacing. 

Smells of herbal and citrus hops with grass, spice and a little booze. 

Taste follows the nose. Grassy, herbal hops, spicey, lemon, slight orange, an almost smokey or burnt wheat and traces of alcohol. Much less alcohol than I expected for the over 10% abv. 

Medium, almost full feel. Moderate carbonation. Slight alcohol "cooling" burn. Long, dry bittersweet finish. 

A nice brew. Much hoppier and more bitter than other wheatwines I've had with less sweetness. It's a unique take on a relatively underdone style. My friend and I both got bottles earlier this year. He agreed to share his now and I'll share mine later. I sure hope I can wait another 12-18 month to let those hops fade and see how much residual sweetness is hiding behind all that bitter. Either way it's freakin tasty.

A: Tawny brown with a huge frothy head and great lacing

S: Lots of booze; grainy--lots of wheat characteristics; pretty hoppy too with lots of grassy, herbal, and citrus hop characteristics; this is boozy and grainy and grassy with just a touch of that cat-pee, dank aroma that comes out in some heavily hopped beers--but in a good way, I promise

T: Man, this is grainy and grassy and boozy; the alcohol is strong but it plays so well off the citrus flavors from the hops and the grainy, herbal, grassy malts

F: A touch thin but a medium finish and sticky, oily texture makes up for the somewhat thin beginning

O: This is a tasty, boozy beer; so grainy and malty and hoppy and boozy and mmm

A deeply hazed dark orange beer with a huge, fluffy, cream-colored head. Retention and lace are both very good. After quite a few months the aroma is still aggressively hoppy; pineapple and citrus leap out of the glass, followed by a heavy, bready malt note and lots of brown sugar and caramel. As the beer opens up and warms a bit more details emerge, in particular a distinctive coconut aroma that was very attractive indeed.

The beer drinks like an enormous DIPA; you can tell Three Floyds had a hand in this one; the hops remain aggressive and bitter; pineapple, citrus, dank resins lash the tongue, a huge wave of chewy malt, molasses and caramel follows, and the beer ends up with a long and lingering bitter aftertaste. Finishes semi-dry with some residual sweetness hanging around.

Medium-full bodied with medium carbonation; this one is a monster to be sure. I came in from work at 11pm Saturday night thinking I’d have a few but after sharing this 750ml bottle I was done for the night.

750 mL bottle poured into a CCB snifter. Reviewed from notes.

Appearance - Deep orange body with a nice off-white head. Sticky lacing.

Smell - Citrusy hops. Nice sweetness, but not overpowering. Fascinating smell, but I don't know what buckwheat smells like. I had some buckwheat pancakes once, but that's not enough for me to identify it readily.

Taste - Great citrus hop flavor. Expected from Three Floyds. Barely any sweetness, but it's different. Slightly spicy, but different from rye. Moderate bitter finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium-heavy body. Not an IPA. Good slick feel with nice carbonation.

Overall - Really nice. Hoppy as hell. The malt flavor is interesting enough to keep me from getting bored with it. A nice change from a standard wheat/barleywine.
