Why is this beer not listed under Mikkeller?

Appearance - Pours semi clear and amber with a nice off white head...it was very dark in the room I tried this in. Nice lacing lingered in the half sized imperial pint glass.

Smell - Toast, under ripe green melon, butter, faint citrus notes

Taste - Fruity hops up front. Butterscotch, caramel, toffee out the back. Cold soba/buckwheat noodles, I know it sounds odd but that's what I got. Werthers. Slightly creamy and buttery.

Mouthfeel - Smooth, nice carbonation.

Overall - I really dug this collaborative effort. Very drinkable for the high abv. I'm looking forward to getting it on tap at my work and analyzing it further.

On-tap at Hopleaf. Served in an imperial half pint glass.

A - A finger of creamy foam settles to a thin cap and splotchy lacework. Lightly hazed Shirley Temple-esque body that's partly red and partly orange?

S - Extremely fruity, with red fruits and berry notes, honey and treacle malt sweetness, and perhaps a bit of toffee. This doesn't have the same aggressive dry hop aroma that the other 'goops had when fresh - I'm guessing that's because it was made in Belgium and shipped across the Atlantic. I'm not sure I actually perceive the buckwheat, although the combo of sweetness and grain is mildly evocative of pancakes.

T - The taste deliver the flavors hinted at in the aroma - caramel-soaked buckwheat, with some sweet marmalade topping in the periphery. There's a bit of zesty twang in the finish that's reminiscent of rye, and then a surprising hop bitterness(?) in the aftertaste.

M - Medium-full body, with moderate carbonation and well-hidden alcohol. There's a lightly burnt syrup/crystallized sugar kind of texture to it.

D - Very rich stuff - I appreciate the serving size, and not as much for the alcohol as for the sweetness. While I was disappointed that this lacked the hoppiness of the other 'goops, I have a feeling this may age more gracefully as the malt bill seems to have more complexity.

1st BA Review... I was lucky enough to have this on tap at the Holy Grale in Louisville, KY.

A - This rare beast pours a beautiful red-orange with a white, foamy head. It left a creamy lacing that lingered around the snifter.

S - Aroma is sweetbread with strong caramel background, also a bit of citrus.

T – Excellent. Taste is bready, citrus, and vanilla/toffee spice. Buckwheat pancakes with spicy citrus marmalade... Balanced and delicious.

M – Very smooth and an easy drinker, especially for a brew labeled at 10.4%. There was a medium body, which I found to be not as syrupy as I expected. However, the mouthfeel was still thick and velvety.

O - Finish highlights the rye followed by a light burn. Another great retired brew from FFF and Mikkeller: an awesome surprise to try this out on tap.

Thanks Tyler and Lori for having the best selection in town.

*There is a large variation between bottle and tap; the tap was great, but the bottle seemed to be missing something.

From the tap at Holy Grale, into a wine glass.

Pours an amberish color with lots of orange highlights. A dense, foamy head that displays great lacing as it is drank down.

Lots of orange rind and other citrus aromas on the nose, with a touch of iced yellow sponge cake sweetness.

Again, a decent amount of orange and tangerine citrus rind. Then transitions into a nice peppery, smoothed out sweetness that can be compared to lighter colored dessert cakes.

On the heavier side of medium bodied with faint carbonation. Smooth and thick, yet still quaffable.

Alot of great citrus hops with and interesting peppery sweentness to it. Pretty good wheat wine, one of the best I've had.

A: Pours a hazy gold with orange highlights and a creamy, clinging white mousse that leaves a thin trail of white lace down the sides of the glass.

S: Aromas of pine, grapefruit, mint, orange, and lemon are nicely balanced by a grainy tartness from the buckwheat. For such a strong ale, there is no alcohol on the nose. It smells quite inviting.

T: A resinous, bitter entry reveals notes of bitter orange, lemon, pine, grapefruit, sage, orange candies, and buckwheat. The finish is hoppy and plenty bitter with the expected interplay of tart citrus and grain flavors.

M: Medium-to-full in body, perhaps closer to the latter than to the former. Carbonation is present, but not particularly intrusive. This ale is rather sticky and resinous in the mouth, so it's not particularly drinkable. Treat this one as a sipper.

O: This is an endlessly fascinating ale that I would have no problem buying again if it were ever available. Despite the high alcohol content and ridiculous amount of hops used, there is nothing imposing or overwhelming about this beer. A really fascinating, innovative take on the wheatwine style, and a beer that I would have no reservations about recommending to anyone.

On-tap at FFF XV and poured into a tasting glass.

A - Pours a burnt orange color, white head, thin collar, thin cap.

S - Burnt sugars, sweet malts, orange chewy candy with sugars. Very sweet and rich, big and bold...still quite balanced and the alcohol is hidden well.

T - Sweet orange candy, burnt sugars, slight caramel, slight hoppy notes. Again, very sweet and rich...the alcohol is there but pretty well hidden for over 10%. Syrupy orange/sweet finish.

M - Medium, light carbonation, creamy, sweet syrupy finish.

O - A decent wheatwine...I had no problem finishing my pour. This is a desert beer and an enjoyable one, at that. Would have again, if I had the chance.

On tap at the maproom, probably the last pour.

Color is a hazy golden orange color. Creamy white head with excellent retention and spiderweb lacing.

Aroma is very strong and mainly resinous, piney and citrus hops. Tart wheat fermented malt is in the background.

Taste emulates the nose with a very heavy tart fermented wheat malt with loads of citrus and fruity hops to go along. Low bitterness follows and alcohol is mildly apparent.

Body is heavy with moderate to low carbonation.

Great extreme beer from 3F. It has a low drinkability but a lot of flavor.

A - Clear amber colored beer with a white head that left some nice sheets and lace down the side of my glass.

S - I don't usually like grapefruit in a beer, but this one has a great grapefruit quality that is quite pleasant. Slightly earthy with some nice hops that balances our the wheatwine sweetness.

T - Taste is great. Some caramel, honey, grapefruit, and nice hops. I really dig this one, possibly my favorite Wheatwine ever.

M - Nice carbonation, beer is really smooth, medium bodied.

O - Goes down easy, way too easy to drink given the ABV. This was a great beer, and for style, one of my favorites.

On tap at the Map Room. 12oz poured into a tulip glass.

A – Dark Caramel, no light coming through. Nice head dissipates in the middle, hangs on to the edges forever. Lacing clings to the side of the glass all the way to the rim.

S – Not overpowering. Lemon-orange. No alcohol, definitely has hops. Very refreshing.

T – Freaking delicious. Delicious malty pale ale beginning gives way to a hint of lemonade. Flavors hit, do their job, and then let the next flavor in. Very well rounded. Not overly sweet. I get some alcohol, but it’s the tiniest amount and in a good, warm way. It balances what sweetness there is.

M – Carbonation hits and then it’s smooth, thick.

O – Awesome awesome beer. Complex and fun to drink. Very glad to have had the chance to try it—will seek out again.

On tap at The Common Table after the Jester King/Mikkeller beer dinner.

The beer pours an orange-amber color with a white head. The aroma has a lot of biscuit malt, as well as a lot of orange citrus notes from the hops and some sugary notes.

The flavor is a nice mix of caramel malt and honey, as well some some orange citrus and pine notes from the hops. There is also the same sugary sweetness that I got in the aroma. There is also some alcohol present but the beer is still easy to drink. Overall, I think the beer tastes like a bigger version of Alpha King, with the same hop profile that I get in a lot of the Three Floyds beers.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Glad I got to try this one, which I found to be very good.

On tap at Map Room's 19th anniversary party.

Served in a tulip, bright saturated orange tone, with a compact layer of white foam on the surface. Drippy lave all around the glass. Lasting retention.

Unique hop aroma, slightly woody and earthy, reminds me of sorachi ace a little bit. Flavors of rich caramel and resiny crushed hop cones.. Smooth feel, sweet and sticky on the lips. Medium bodied with a long bitter aftertaste. Overall pretty hop forward, as much of FFF's output is. Better than past goops, at least those in recent memory.

I had this on tap at the brewpub.

A - Copper, amber with a nice white head that didn't linger for more than just a few minutes. This thing has great legs as well.

S - Malty and sugary. Very little hop character.

T - Mostly malty, with some honey. It has a definite wine character to it. There was little hoppiness, but I did taste the slightest amount of grapefruit bitterness on the finish.

M - Quite viscous. It goes down like honey butter.

O - I really enjoyed this. Rich and malty with a wine like character. Nothing to powerful, but definitely a very enjoyable sipper. The alcohol crept up on me. Yah. Nice. It's different enough from a traditional barleywine to be considered "not normal". That's what the Floyds do best.

This was sampled at the FFF 15th Anniversary party. This was a must try, a buckwheat wine.

This arrived a pumpkin orange in color with a one finger white head. The nose is overpowering malts with some slight fresh hop aromas. It is extremely sweet on the nose. The flavors too are pure malts, very heavy on the caramel malts, with some light and fresh hop character. The malt dominates so heavily that you don't get any hop bitterness. You surprisingly don't get any of the 10.4% in either the nose or flavors. The sugar however prohibits this beer from showing much complexity. It drinks like an American barleywine and thankfully isn't like the other wheatwines that I've had (although this is a buckwheat wine). It's just hard for me to get past all the sugar. It drank exceptionally smooth on draft but this, like the other 'Goops is an acquired taste.

Had on tap at the FFF Anniversary party. Served in a plastic cup. Brewed in collaboration with Mikkeller, Buckwheat wine.

A: Pours a clear amber and deep gold straw mixture with a solid white head. Sheets of lace are left down the cup.

S: Grapefruits, sweet candy, honey and solid oat malts all fill the nose.

T: Candied sugars with a touch of semi-sweet honey. Grapefruit hops with a little touch of flower.

M: Medium to heavy bodied with a syrup like quality. Coats the entire palate. Little low on the carbonation.

O: This tasted pretty good and another solid addition to the "goop" family. The mouthfeel kind of lacked for me which was my only real knock.

Thanks to Mike for bringing this one - always willing to try something from Three Floyds. Boogoop comes out of the bottle looking slightly copper with a swampy, brown-ish hue to it. Translucent, topped with a half-inch head that's off-white in color and pretty quick to recede. No real lacing left behind, though that's not too shocking for a 10%+ ABV wheatwine.

Aroma is VERY buckwheat heavy. I haven't had much buckwheat in my life, aside from in pancakes and such, but its aroma is very noticeable and very easy to recognize - very dry and grainy. Booze is apparent but isn't too hot or off-putting. A nice bouquet joins the aromatics about halfway through; perfume, roses, flowers, leaves - smells more like a forest or a handful of grass rather than actual hops.

And not so far from the aroma, the flavor is so, so heavy on the buckwheat. Extremely dry, grainy, and borderline abrasive. The floral hops are noticeable from the start - flowery and grassy in all their glory - but unfortunately they get buried by the robustness of the buckwheat. The booze starts off mild, but starts to open up with time and by the end, you're definitely getting a little bit of heat.

Caramel malts and some sugary sweetness from the malt help to balance the beer, but sadly there isn't much hope. The buckwheat and the booze are too heavy to be balanced properly, which is a shame, because some of the flavors from the malts would probably be quite nice. Pretty thick body with a sticky, almost syrup-like mouth feel, low carbonation.

Well, I'm glad to say I got to try this one, but it fell awfully flat for me. If you're a dedicated lover of buckwheat, then you'll surely love this beer. But it was quite overpowering and heavy, and the dryness from it was a bit too intense to be consistently enjoyable. Not awful or undrinkable, but not something I'd care to try again. Either way, big thanks to Mike for cracking it open.

Swampy red brown, stripes of thin beading just below the head, a few fingers of khaki head recede down to create a fat dollop that floats around the middle of the glass and great sticky lace.

Fat caramel and dessert sweetness, honey and citrus, toasted grains... nice.

Mmmm... bittersweet pineapple and wheat... warming booze is well integrated, orange and pear, mouthfeel is a little chalky and dry, allowing the finish to linger between tastes.

Glad to finally try this one - good shit.

Sweet pour - dark amber color with a full head at pour that persists well. Unfiltered & cloudy - appears to have good body. Great lacing. Served chilled in a Bell's Snifter.

A- Deep burnt orange with a two-finger eggshell head that slowly dissipates to one finger. Solid lacing.

S- Toffee, mild heat, woody resin, pine, grapefruit, brown sugar and caramel.

T- Bitter cocoa bean, mild pine, grapefruit, toffee, dryish, sweet finish.

M- Mildly drying, very little carbonation, not as sticky as I thought it would be.

O- Very interesting, a nice balance between hops and malts. Shockingly easy to drink for this abv. Bold and challenging, yet a pleasure to drink, what would you expect from these two breweries.

a nice amber in color with lots of off white head which dissipated slowly and gave off some excellent amounts of sticky lacing.. seems a little over carbonated. smells really sweet like a barley wine, a slight hint of oxidation, grassy hops. the taste is bitter up front from earthy/grassy hops, then the sweetness of the wheat kicks in. a very flavorful bready treat with a hint of oxidation. medium body with moderate amount of carbonation. this is my first beer of this style and i think i'm in love. a really malty beer with excellent lacing, color, and a nice overall bready smell/taste.

(This is a very old review I'm only just entering, I haven't hung onto this beer for two years)

Pours a coppery red colour, thins out at the edge. Head is massively generous, ballooning up to the top of the glass, in what is really pleasant consistency. Leave gorgeous, jaundiced lace behind. Too much head, but seriously, looks a treat.

Smells pleasantly floral. Lots of hop on there, giving light, pleasant tropical aromas - pine-lime mostly, with some other citrus, cake battery malt. Some woody resin, rosewater maybe too? Yes, very light and pleasant.

Taste is oddly sweet, with a lot of light vanilla-coated malt throughout and hint of rye spice. Develops some floral notes on the mid-palate, a touch of resin and maybe some citrus - then the hops pretty much go away and we're left with sweetness. Slight lychee tanginess on the back adds some depth, but it's quite disappointingly sweet overall. Kind of tastes like an experiment in late hopping - no bittering hops, just the tangy aroma and early flavour hops. But I would also say it's evidence in favour of early hopping.

Full but fluid, with the right amount of drying. Very nice texture.

I wish I liked this more, but there's a real saccharine quality to it, and I just wish it would man up.

A relatively clear reddish copper color with a giant off-white head and
tons of chunky lace. The aroma brings a little malt caramel with astringent
mineral wheat. Kind of punchless, but okay. The flavor comes on with an odd
fruit medley and nutty malt with more sweet mineral ideas. Grassy bitterness and
some biscuit brightness and sweet celery. Very interesting with a lingering
minty quality. Medium-plus body with a pretty full but smooth feel. Not
something I would rush to buy again but definitely a good experience.

750ml bottle split with my awesome wife.
Served in a Duvel tulip

A - Pours a hazy burnt amber color with a frothy off-white head. The sinks into a thick sudsy cap with thick horizontal lines of lacing.

S - Rich bready caramel malts, caramelized brown sugar, sugar cookie dough, citrus hops, candied stone fruit, ripe pineapple.

T - Matches the nose with big caramel and breadyness, toasted toffee, crushed pecans, maple syrup, grapefruit oils, mango , papaya, and leafy hops. The middle pushes hearty barley grains, and pine comes out as it warms. Finishes with sweet barley and sticky citrus and pine notes

M - This is where the wheat shines providing a full bodied, lush creamy feel. Finishes semi dry with zero alcohol presence.

Incredible! This has more of a Barleywine twist to it than a straight wheat wine. The wheat seemed to only show up in the incredibly smooth mouthfeel. Intense candied fruit flavors that were were very complex and balanced at the same time.

A - pours a heavy foam head of the light mocha white variety; the beer is a deep orange-red; foam lacing retained

S - citrus and subtle grapefruit notes; full of hop-flower aromas; some malty sugars and hints of wheat; a bit of caramel; grapes

T - the buckwheat makes for a bitter taste up front; the beer as some toffee nut elements; a little hoppy, a little sweet; some acrid fruit flavors

M - a bit syrupy but medium-to-full bodied with the right amount of carbonation; some nutty finish qualities; hop bitterness

O - the beer is pretty busy but does a great job hiding its 10.4; I'm not overly impressed and don't feel this is an overtly quaffable offering; it has some redeeming qualities and it's certainly worth a taste or cellar spot, but I likely won't be seeking out another; the wheat-hop-bitter-mix doesn't entice.
