This beer is retired; no longer brewed.
A robust Aesir porter brewed with our friends the band Amon Amarth, deep roasted malts and honey give this
beer its dark color and rich mouth feel. When Heimdal sounds the Gailar Horn for the last battle, this is the beer the gods will drink.

On tap, served in a chalice glass.
A- Black with a one finger tan head that dissipates into a thin cap and leaves some thin sheets of lacing along the side of glass.
S- Roasted malt, a bit of smoke, dark chocolate, coffee beans with some bold citrus hops with notes of grapefruit and orange zest.
T- Chocolate, coffee and roasted malt upfront, followed by some smoke and a bit of honey and finishes with some grapefruit and orange zest.
M- Medium carbonation and creamy body that finishes slightly bitter. The alcohol is well hidden, which makes this dangerously drinkable.
O- Never had a porter with this much hop presence, but another great offering from FFF. Very drinkable and a unique take on a porter.

(Served in a bowtie)
A- This beer pours a dense brown body with a bubbly light tan head that last for a good bit. It is to dark to see any carbonation.
S- The clean chocolate malt aroma has a softer char quality to the finish.
T- The slight roasted mellow black malt has a note of sweetness to it and a chocolate richness that grows as the beer opens. There is a pine wood hop bite in the finish and a pleasant skunk pungency to it. There is a mineral water flavor that comes through a the beer opens. The malt also takes on a light wood and smoke note as it warms.
M- This beer has a medium-light mouthfeel with no real alcohol heat noticed.
O- The smooth black malt flavors give it nice character and depth and the good crisp hop bite in the finish rounds out the flavor. Easy to drink especial for a beer that big.

On tap at the brewpub, 20 June 2011.
This pours almost black with a one finger tan head that sticks around impressively leaving nice lace. On the nose there is a big hop presence, maybe as big as I've experienced in a porter, along with roasted coffee. In the mouth both kinds of bitterness come out, the roasted malt and especially the big hop addition. It's almost too hoppy to me, and the profile is definitely in the Alpha King family, a bit strange perhaps. The body is very viscous, apparently due to an addition of honey, with a nice long finish.
Overall, this is a pretty good porter that, to me anyway, had a little too aggressive hop component. FFF already makes a great hoppy porter, Alpha Klaus, and while this isn't exactly the same it's in the same family.

Tried at Floyds, 11 Jun 2011. Served in an ~8 oz tulip.
Small light brown head is relatively quick to dissipate. Medium carbonation. Very dark brown, almost black. Moderate roasty aroma, some cocoa. Starts roasty bitter, some coffee. A touch of molasses and dark sugar but not terribly sweet. Medium body, alcohol is going to my head. Finish and aftertaste is roasty bitter.
Not quite sure what an Aesir porter is.

On tap at Three Floyds brewpub in an open mouth snifter.
A - Pours pretty much black with a light mocha head. Head clinging to the side and creating some nice lacing.
S - Chocolate, oatmeal, roasted malts. Very rich and pwerful. Delightful beer to smell and entices you to taste.
T - What smells like it could be a stout gives way in taste as to what it is, a nice bold porter. Coffee bitterness is apparent with a nice malty profile and smooth light aftertaste. The oatmeal taste makes the porter feel almost chewy at first. Complex taste and a great porter.
M - Heavy and thick with that dark malt taste lingering. While taste is more porter, the mouthfeel reminds me of a stout.
O - I really enjoyed this beer. Def not made for a hot day, but this is a great bold porter that doesn't disappoint. Good thick taste and a wonderful roasty smell to go along with it. Looking forward to drinking more of this rich porter come fall from the bottle.

On-tap at Three Floyds. Poured in snifter.
A: Pours a thick black with a nice 1 finger dark khaki head. Leaves quickly leaving behind a nice little lace.
S: Very malty this one is. There is some subtle sweetness in the back along with a nice dry roast.
T: Great dry roast from the malts. Nice bitter coffee and bakers chocolates and the honey adds a nice sweetness that gives it a vanilla-like quality.
M: Very smooth and creamy. Medium to light bodied with a decent carbonation.
O: A nice porter. Not my favorite, but yet another nice beer from those guys down in Munster, Indiana.

The most interesting offering I saw on the taplist yesterday at FFF. Poured on June 5th, 2011 in a tulip glass.
A - Dark chocolate brown coloring, with a creamy lacing, narrow head, and very little retention. Typical porter visuals.
S - Hmm... lots of citrus and honey with a little bit of roast and coffee underneath. This is atypical for a porter profile.
T - Big honey sweetness right out of the gates. Quite nice initial big flavor. Floral and citrus follow behind, then roasted malts and a slight dark chocolate bitter finish. Spices must be in there somewhere, can't quite pick them out.
M - A little creamy, lacking in carbonation. Long, nice finish. The body maybe lacks as well, just feels a tad thin.
D - Quite good. No abv presence. This is the most unique porter I've come across, and I would like to revisit it later on.

Imbibed at FFF Brewpub 04/15/2011
Appearance -- Deep chestnut hue with a slim stiff cap of mocha head. Quite lacy as the level dips down.
Smell -- Treacle, molasses, roast malt, and woodsmoke. Sweet and smokey. Good, but a bit simple.
Taste -- Well-roasted malt, molasses, toasted nuts, cocoa, faint citrusy hops and moderate hop bitterness.
Mouthfeel -- Medium-light body with somewhat creamy carbonation. Finish is bone dry.
Overall -- Quite good and fairly unique. I enjoyed the nuttiness as well as the citrusy notes - you don't taste that in many porters. No Topless Wytch, but still up to FFF's high standards.

A - Black beer that turns red and slightly yellow on the edges when held up to the light. Nice big, khaki head that had good retention and left some pretty great lace behind.
S - Some nice smoke over dark fruits. I really enjoy the smoked aspect of this one, which cuts into the sweetness of the fruit. The porter-smell does peak through the sweetness and smoke and consists of a sufficently roasted malt and caramel backbone.
T - Taste is good and somewhat unique. It's a fairly untraditional porter, particularly with the amount of dark fruits and sweetness that are present for the style. The smoke is present, but makes way for the fruit and caramel. The finish is a slightly oily sweetness, almost a touch lactic. It's good, but I wish it were slightly less sweet and more roast/smoke forward. Tastes like they really dry-hopped the heck out of it, which some may find a bit distracting.
M - Creamy, full bodied, slightly oily and slick on the finish.
O - Pretty interesting beer, and quite good. I drank it side by side with Ham On Rye, which was my preference, but I think a lot of people would enjoy this one more. Worth trying.

This brew is Amon Amarth. I had it at their show last night at the Bottom Lounge in Chicago. In the nose, you could really smell the smoke malts and a bit of honey. The brew had a nice light brown ,thick head. During my first sip, it felt very smooth and you could really taste the smoked malts and the hops. The nice thing about this porter was that I had three of them and wasn't full, unlike my past experiences with porters.
Overall, this was an incredible brew and cannot to have it again. Last night couldn't get any better, heavy metal with the guys from 3 floyds and this brew.

22 oz. bottle poured into a HotD tulip glass
Vintage: The one and only!
From notes. Enjoyed a couple summers back at a backyard BBQ with the usual suspects in the Mile High Knight's tasting crew. Brought by me to share with the group.
A: Deep, very dark brown. Single (mocha) fingernail head on gentle pour.
S: Robust and roasty. Loads of coffee and roastiness, hint of charred dark malt, and chocolate with a bold scent of citrus hops. Very different, but I like how it stand apart from others of the same style.
T: Follows smell and the roastiness is quite enjoyable. Hint of smokiness too which adds a nice twist. Honey sweetness is good too! I preferred this as it warmed though (cold, was a bit too muted).
M: Medium bodied with even carbonation. Real nice!
O: A hoppy (par-for-the-course with FFF) porter that is really enjoyable. Let it warm a bit though to enjoy the multi-layered complexity of this beer.

I've really liked this beer, bought a bunch of bottles in 2011. I never reviewed it fresh, only now getting to it while opening a bottle that's about 1 year old.
It pours dark brown and opaque with a really nice foam, thick mocha-colored froth that laces in huge chunks. Gorgeous. When fresh this had a distinct hoppy note in the aroma, and while that attribute diminished with age it's still somewhat noticeable. From smell alone I prefer this with age. There's a smoked malt presence in the aroma that really comes through with the faded hops. And cocoa, this smells near perfect to me.
The hops have lived on in the flavor, giving strong citrusy counterpoint to the peat-like smokiness that is my main draw. Slightly sweet, lots of roasted character but nowhere near acrid. Again, age has been kind to this beer, I'm really happy I've kept some this long.
Overall a nearly perfect American Porter, executed just as you'd expect FFF to do it, hopped up and reminiscent of Black Sun or Alpha Klaus, albeit with its own smoked malt character. Outstanding, highly recommended.

A - Pours a dark brown-black color with a finger of rothy khaki-chocolate colored head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some nice lacing.
S - Aroma is a mix of roasted chocolate malts, dark fruit, smoke, black licorice, honey, coffee, and a touch of lactose sweetness.
T - Starts off with a mix of roasted chocolate malts with some dark fruit, some smoke, and some black licorice. Through the middle, some coffee comes through with some honey, and a bit of lactose sweetness. The finish is a mix of roasted milk chocolate malts, dark fruit, coffee, smoke, and a bit of honey.
M - Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with sweet, smokey, and warming finish.
D - Very drinkable. Nice imperial porter with good complexity, body, and overall balance.

A- Pours a very very dark leathery brown with a very creamy mocha head that has great retention.
S- Cocoa, smoke, honey, and flowers. Interesting and inviting.
T- Cocoa, smoke, citrus, honey, and flowers. The sweetness works really well with the smokiness. Tasty.
M- The carbonation is smooth and abundant. The alcohol is well hidden.
O- A tasty take on the style. Smooth and sweet without being too rich. Well made.

Poured a dark brown color into a pint glass. No light gets through, a medium sized tan head with good retention and some spotty lacing.
Aroma is....hops!!! This is a hoppy beer with some roasted and smoky malts. Nice strong aroma...maybe not a typical Porter aroma, but good all the same.
Taste is very good. Roasted and smoky malts take a slight back seat to some robust hoppy bitterness. part of the balance battle is the honey which adds some riichness and sweetness to the mix.
Mouthfeel is crisp and also rich. The hops add a good "bite" / dimension to the mouthfeel, but there is also some malty and honey sweetness. No hint of alcohol.
This is a very enjoyable and drinkable beer

Thanks to IrishColonial for sharing this one the other night. Poured from a 22oz bottle into a tasting glass. It poured dark brown in color with a thin spotty tan head to it.
The aroma is very grainy and bready with some toasted malts and a little bit of caramel sweetness. It has a raw, spent grains on brew day like flavor to it.
The taste also has a big grainy and toasted malt flavor to it. I get some sweeter caramel flavors to it along with a hint of smoke. It's really grainy and bready but a little hoppiness is there as well.
The mouthfeel feels a little thin for the style with carbonation being moderate. Overall It wasn't bad but it wasn't really outstanding either. Very grainy, bready and sweet. It felt strange for the style and had definitely made me think of raw, spent grains as I was drinking it.

Citrus hops up front in the aroman. The beer is medium bodied. Notes of Chocolate and roast. Bitterness does not linger at all and is quite subtle. This porter is damn tasty!!! Three Floyds knocked this one out the park! I'm not sure of the quantaty available, but I highly recommended this beer!

dark brown with a fluffy head. Intense hoppiness in the nose with big notes of citrus fruits. The taste follows with intense hops that don't fade. This definitely isn't your regular porter with the amount of hops they dumped in. Very tasty with a light-med porter body that I expect and very little aftertaste. Definitely a tasty beer.

huge thanks to G311 for the in person swap at southampton. great to see you again!
a - opened and filled my ccb snifter. pewter 8 ball black with a greyish fizzy porter head that fizzled away within a minute. spotty lacing if at all.
s - dusty chocolate powder. smooth roast. subtle.
t/m - big robust chocolate roasted malts. big tasty flavor. richer and fuller than your average porter...but doesn't push the line into stout land. still has the cool crisp char feel and finish. really nice full bodied porter.
o - overall, a balls to the wall porter. really enjoyable. roasted chocolate fullness with a glaze of the normal porter char. great crossover porter for a stout fan. very much enjoyed this one!

Dark brown/black beer with a one inch head poured into a duvel glass. Aroma is of coffee, dark fruit, and bittersweet chocolate.
Strong malt and lightly smokey flavor. The hop bitterness blends in well and cuts through the malt nicely. There is a honey flavor present and the aftertaste definately carries dark chocolate tones. The mouthfeel is somewhat thin but manages to coat the mouth. The alcohol is well hidden. I first had this on Christmas day and will buy again until it's gone. It is a decently complex ale for the style.
Oh and Amon Amarth rules.

A: black with a nice creamy tan head.
S: light/medium roasted coffee, chocolate, dried dark stone fruits and sweetish honeyed notes. although the bottle is fresh, i don't get the big hoppy notes that i see in other reviews after having reviewed this myself.
T: SAA. medium to full sweet roasted malts are enhanced by the honey, although this could just be perceived. sweetness is varied and seems to come in many guises-brown sugar, chocolate, honey, caramel. just enough smooth bitterness and smooth roasty notes to bring it to a semisweet, but not cloying, finish. the 8.2% abv is well-hidden.
M: medium to full body. nicely carbonated...any less and this may have been a syrupy mess in the taste and mouthfeel.
O: a very well-done porter, better than alpha klaus imho.

A - Looks like a nice thin porter. Good amount of head. Not all that much lacing.
S - Really nice smell! Almost like a black IPA. Most prominent smells are citrus, dark fruit, and hops.
T - Malts and honey. Dark fruit. Then bitterness from the hops (conjuring images of zombie dust here). Quite nice.
M - Nice mouthfeel. Nicely carbonated and well balanced. Smooth drinking. Not too thick with the honey.
O - I liked this beer a lot. Maybe a bit sweet but the hops even it out nicely!

Thanks to Ehammond1 for sharing this little number
Look: Black and totally opaque with a 1/4 inch head and great retention
Smell: Roasted malt oak and honey
Taste: The beer starts out much the way you would expect it to with some roasted malt and a touch of coffee and mid palate the honey shows up and finishes with a unique bitter floral hoppy not. That kind of ruined the flavor for me
Mouthfeel: Medium body and medium carbonation
Overall: A decent porter at best. I think the hoppy notes really hurt the beer

22 oz bomber, no date, poured into a pint glass.
A- Pours very dark brown, nearing the blackness of Hel. Capped with a creamy tan head that towers as high as the giants that assault the walls of Asgaard and leaves crusty lacing in its wake.
S- Roasted malt, milk chocolate and coffee, a trace of the smoke of burning villages and Surtur's flaming sword, some leafy hops and the pines of the Scandinavian forest.
T- Big roasted flavor up front, coffee, a sweet chocolatey center, and a lot of grains charred by the Thunder God's lightning. Towards the finish the hops, leafy and piney, become more present, finishing with hoppiness as bitter as Baldr's death.
M- Medium-bodied, creamy, slightly sticky feel with a finish as dry as the dust of your bones.
O- An awesome brew, big flavors split your skull like a Berserker's axe. If you were speared in the back on the sandy banks of a river, deep in the land of the Rus, this is the kind of beer that would keep you company in your final agonies.
