bomber poured into a snifter

A-- Poured a hazy, darker orange amber color. Nice visible carbonation and for it's age a nice 2 finger off white head that left nice soapy lacing. Not what I expected for a barleywine or compared to the first two in the series.

S-- Hops are still quite lively. Good fruit nose of Orange and grapefruit with some pine notes. Followed by the carmel backbone. Just bits of rye spices. Follows more of a DIPA ish nose really.

T-- Still quite hoppy. has held up well. Got the backbone of toasted carmel and then orange, pine and grapefruit. Just slightly grainy fruit flavors and touches of rye spice. Did fall apart after it warmed though. Lots of lemon scented pledge. Not entirely bad but overpowering lemon.

M-- Oily and full bodied. Still quite carbonated and lively. Earthy and spicy feel and dry finish.

O-- Not bad but got hard to finish as just became a lemon bomb and lost the Carmel and other fruits. First half of the beer was very nice though.

A - Pors a clear red-tinged burnt orange with two fingers of tan head. head has very nice retention and leaves a ton of lacing.

S - Big aromas of toffee and caramel, with some spicy rye and citrus.

T - Taste is a nice melding of caramel malt, rye spice, citrus hops and some bread malt. The hops add a nice bitterness, but do not dominate. Has a very smooth blend of malt, spice and bitterness. Initial sweetness fades and turns bitter on the finish, which is dry and pretty clean. I didn't try this fresh, so I don't know how aggressive the hopping was originally, but I think it is spot on at this point.

M - Medium/full mouthfeel is sticky sweet to begin with before turning dry spicy and bitter.

O - A very enjoyable barleywine that had no noticeable alcohol in the aroma or the taste. Taste was actually somewhat subtle for a barleywine, but I think it works well.

big thanks to BlessedBeBeer for hitting yet another want of mine! Gary, you rule! enjoyed out of an urthel oversized tulip.

a - poured a murky yellow that settled in the glass as a stunning orange. massive off-white creamy belgian style head that hung out for a while. as it faded, it left chunky creamy lacing all over the glass.

s - very nice caramel malt. smells a lot like a year old bigfoot. toffee is HUGE. the rye seems to have held up and are mixed perfectly.

t - vanilla and toffee malts. there is no mistake that this is an american barleywine, but the hops have certainly faded. nice splash of tropical fruit with the malt. tastes really excellent. rye works well and tastes dialed back.

m - smooth and easy drinker. carbonation held up just fine...medium bodied which is suprisingly thin for the flavoring. i'd expect it to be syrupy with such a bold flavor.

o - overall, what an excellent surprise to get to try this beer. i'm a big fan of both three floyds and mikkeller...and rye beers!!! never had it fresh, but it is nice and subtle now.

A clouded orange brew with an off-white small head leaving liittle lacing but good curtains.

Sweet smells, tropical fruits with a hint of spiciness.

Tasting sweet, apricot jam and tropical fruit soup.

Little carbonation, soft and oily, a light dry finish.

i miss the expected raw, sour and spicy ryeness, more a vinous fruit soup.

Adding another sampling of this, split it with mrand01, still amazing flavor, nice underlying citrus and rye, not too heavy, really a super super beer.

Pours a very hazy dark orange, borderline amber in color with a huge fluffy amount of eggshell white head that leaves some nice soapy lacing. A surprisingly large amount of head and carbonation for a XXX-wine style beer.

Aromas begin with a ton of spicy rye malt and equal amounts of thick bready and caramel maltiness as well; smells like a thick dense, doughy, undercooked loaf of rye bread fresh out of the oven. As I dig back in I get some light orange and lemon hops with a subtle amount of grapefruit as well; quite citrusy for the hop bill. Smells quite balanced overall at this point.

The tastes begin with a generous amount of rye malt but there is an decent amount of fruitiness as well. Not initially citrusy as the nose was; I get a more juicy fruit flavor here with plum and peach flavors. As it warms you get a bit more of the dark bready, caramelized brown sugar malty sweetness that was evident in the nose. Flavors borderline between sticky rye and caramel/toffee, but stay solidly on the thick bready/rye malty side. There is a nice solid citrus hop bitterness and flavor profile that stops this from being cloying or anywhere close to being too sweet, which is possible with aged barleywines.

The mouthfeel is full bodied with full carbonation but luckily is doesn't detract from the experience here. If the flavors were more toward the toffee/chocolate side I would prefer less carbonation, but because the malts are more bready, spicy and light caramel forward the higher carbonation works here with the lighter malt bill. Finish is full and drying thanks to the higher ABV and the spicy rye malt.

Overall, this was a real treat. I love Rye IPAs and Rye Pale Ales and have been wanting to try one of these highly acclaimed Rye Wines. Although I have nothing to compare this to as far as the "style" goes, I can tell this was well done and I imagine it was probably too harsh and DIPA forward when initially released but I feel the bottle conditioning has made this a bit too carbonated over time and so I recommend consuming any bottles you have now to avoid extreme over carbonation. Drinking great, highly recommended for Barley Wine, Rye beer fans, and fans of Three Floyds/Mikkeller's style of unique beer creation.

A: it had an orange, caramel, color with a pure white foam

S: The smell was the best part, it had a lot of peach, nectarine, citrus, apricot, and some candied ginger

T: As for the taste, it had some burnt toffee notes, citrus, tangerine, and some spicy rye notes

M: it was a bit over carbonated for me, but still tasted pretty delicious

O: Overall, it was still pretty tasty. But, honestly, the aroma was the best part along with the citrus and burnt toffee notes. It was over a pretty good beer.

A - Pours a dark orange with a small tan head that fades quickly. Lots of lacing left on the glass.

S - Sweet malts, floral - almost soapy scented.

Pours out a nice light brown color with a modest head of tan across the top that fades and leaves light lacing in its wake. Aroma is hot, loads of alcohol here with hints of caramel, lots of hops and a just a biting malt nose as well. Really a very odd profile from both sides. Very hot on the palate again with minimal balance to it, just seemed like it was terribly off balance. Flavors were all over the place with hints of everything but the kitchen sink and just an very hot, hoppy, dry finish that really did not work well for me at all.

Overall I was rather unimpressed

Pours a very pretty hazy cloudy orange with a solid white head. Smells incredible. Tons of spicy rye with some wonderful lemon and/or cities (can't quite place it). The nose is amazing. Big thanks to HOPSHUNTER for the share. It pours hazy copper with gold hues and decent enough looking off white head. The aroma is BIG and emits yum all around the room with spicy rye, crusty sticky malts, malt syrup, sludgy pine hops and a bit of floral too. The taste hits with spicy rye and grapefruit to tangelo like citrus hops. It then flows into thick maltiness infused with pine and a bit of floral hops too. Just pure yum. Loved it.

Hard-poured into a New Belgium Tulip

A: Gigantic, white head rises and slowly falls, leaving behind cloudy (altocumulus) lacing. The head looks like it belongs on top of a belgian pale ale because it is a pillowy dollop that lasts to the bottom of the glass. The beer itself is amber and has some bubbles rising slowly to the head.

S: Rye bread, orange marmalade and grapefruit peels. Some lemon zest and general spiciness.

T: Some sweetness on front of palate, orange marmalade and rye bread follow. Surprisingly, a touch of vanilla. Spice and bitterness toward the end, but they are relatively soft and subside for citrus peels, which form Ruggoop's finish.

M: Fairly heavy body and moderate carbonation. Creamy, smooth mouthfeel. Some alcohol warming.

D: I have to keep reminding myself that this is a sipper because it goes down the hatch a little too easily.

Bright copper with tangerine edges. A good finger of beige head. Oily film after it dissipated. Tight tiny bubbled lacing.

Grapefruit, Pine and dank. Sweet caramel and vanilla. A spicy toastiness.

Rush of bitter grapefruit and dank pine. Followed by a sweet burst of toasty carmelized spicy rye. Vanilla and sweet booze creep in. and concludes with a resinous bitter piney finish.

Thick and sticky. Big mouth feel, creamy. Slow deliberate carbonation. Great feel.

Very drinkable big rye wine. Complex and Tasty as fuck. Love this one.

Bottle into The Bruery tulip.

Pours a murky, dull brownish-gold, with a spectacular 3-finger, ultra-dense, rocky, creamy off-white head. Excellent retention, with ridiculous amounts of lacing. Everything but the color is literally perfect.

Nose is beautifully balanced. Big, floral citrus is bright, almost delicate, over a beautiful balance of caramel and deeply bready malt notes, with that rustic quality that is so inherent in rye beers.

Taste is surprisingly mellow. Bready malts and caramel as expected, with, with massive amounts of ripe golden fruit and citrus (grapefruit up front, oranges underneath), blending all together in a way that, unfortunately, seems to drag the whole thing down into a bit of a bland place. Certainly a rich beer underneath, there isn't much in the way of malt complexity or hop brightness to cut through it - just a slightly earthy, deeply bready body with just a bit of caramel, and the ghosts of hop additions past adding some citrus, and just a tiny bit of bite on the floral back-end, but never anything in the way of bitterness. I'm assuming a lot of the initial brightness and intensity seems to have faded at this point, and while the beer is certainly enjoyable enough, it doesn't pack nearly the complexity you'd expect out of an abv of this magnitude.

Mouthfeel is slick, very full-bodied, with a carbonation that is very reserved. A bit of lingering bitterness builds as the glass empties, but it's very much an afterthought.

Overall, a nice beer indeed, and while I can understand the point of the whole -goop line, I wonder if their talents wouldn't be better spent elsewhere. Interested in what the next could be though - Triticalegoop?

Pours amber white a small head. The aroma is citric and fruity with notes of mango, apricot and grapefruit up front. Lots of resin, pine and green herbs as well. Bread, toast, spices and caramel from the grains. Soapy on the nose. The flavor is near medium sweet, medium to heavily bitter, quite boozy, and light acidic. Citric, piny and fruity hops alongside spicy/bready rye and perhaps some toasted caramel. The mouthfeel is round and soft with light carbonation. Good balance between the malt and hops on the finish. Medium to full bodied. Yet another interesting collaboration between Three Floyds and Mikkeller although not as good as the Oatgoop (another retired brew) I had a while ago.

Thanks to unclejedi for this hand-delivered bottle as part of a fine BIF this past fall. Popped open on, hopefully, the last bitterly cold Saturday evening of the winter here in Tromso. Split with my wife.

Pours a nice fire-warmed orange, with a smell like a slightly aged IPA, all warm citrus & sweet malt. Pungent rye. An odd combo.

Ruggoop's taste, just like the smell, just doesn't quite come together. The hops arrive first & they feel past their prime; the rye kicks a spicy element in behind, clashing with the hops like a Stalin/Streisand musical. These two components really dominate & anything else in the beer is lost in the mud; there's a bit of malt backbone, & a light nickel/copper mix.

Decent enough beer, but I'm not sure quite what the brewers were aiming for. DIPA? Barleywine? Wheatwine? SuperHefe? Whatever it was, it missed the mark. Odd.

This Three Floyds and Mikeller collaboration should really be called a ryewine. This beer uses a substantial amount of rye that really showcases the spicy, grainy qualities of the rye that is sometimes hidden in other rye beers the are too hop-forward. There is a nice amount of citrusy hop bitterness and enough attenuation to leave a dry finish. I was glad to have tasted some but not really my favorite

Poured a golden yellow in color with brown highlights when held up to the light that had a thin head and left some good lacing sticking to the glass. There was lots of sweetness from the malts but had faint hop, citrus and some bubblegum character. it did seem to have slight caramel as well. The taste also huge amounts of malts but the hoppy character was more apparent on the palate abd was not supre bitter which I don't dig. It had citrusy bubblegum accents and a touch of caramel. The brew was medium to full in body with a moderate amount of carbonation which had a sweet malty, citrusy, mild hoppy, and slight boozy sticky finish. It was a pretty solid barleywine with a nice hop profile and was drinking really well. Now I'm gonna hunt down that last 2 goop brews

A: The pour is bright orange in color with a fair amount of haze and a white head.

S: There's a really big grapefruit aroma and quite a bit of tangerine and orange, too. There's a nice pine quality to it along with some bread and alcohol.

T: Like with the nose, a lot of grapefruit flavor is present here. The alcohol is obvious here as well, and there's some pine hops which provide a bitterness. Some sweet malt of toffee and bread, and maybe some brown sugar, too. Seems maybe a touch spicy. Rye?

M: The body is kind of thin for a barleywine and the carbonation is somewhat soft.

D: Like almost any other beer that Mikkeller is involved in, this was pretty mediocre. Definitely boozy and really not much malt for a barleywine.

Got the next goop beer from one of my fav breweries thanks to sbricker.

A huge rising head hits 3 fingers high and starts to fade quickly at first but slows to a medium and slower pace with some sticky lacing. The beer is a slightly hazy slightly reddish orange peach colored.

Nose brings a bit of interesting rye out right in the front with a bit of spice, some fruit behind that with a bit of tropical fruits and hops, some grassy and slightly herbal hops as well, some sweet dark malts and a bit of syrups, a slight aged hop aroma, and some bready malts, and lots of smashed hop pellet like aromas.

Taste starts slightly sweet but not as much as I expected. Lots of rye with some rye spice and fruit flavor as well, which seems to go hand in hand with the herbal grassy hop kick, which gets fairly bitter but not overly, some light fruits a bit tropical, some earthy bitterness. SOme malts and sweet syrups, but those take a back seat to the hops and rye. NO real booze taste either as it is masked well by the other flavors. Finish lingers with more of the rye but lots of herbal grassy hops, somewhat dry, fairly spicy, and a slight bit of warming booze coming through finally. Late on the palate a bit of caramel and toffee come out, but it's hard to get through all the spicy rye and hops.

The mouth is medium bodied, with way too much carbonation. This style shouldn't have that much carbonation and it takes away from the flavor and feel a bit.

Drink is pretty good, drinks a lot less than 9.5%, with a decent dryness on the finish, but the spicy flavors from the rye hit a little too much, magnified by the spicy herbal hops.

Again from 3F a good barleywine, this one with a really nice addition of the rye and hops, but lacking a bit on the malts. It also has way too much carbonation. It also seems to play with the typical 3F barleywine, where fresh it's pretty good but aging this would probably go bad, luckily this is fresh. Thanks again Scott for giving me the chance to try this one.

Listed as a barleywine, I thought it was a wheatwine.

Pours a light yellow orange with 2 fingers of white head.

Smells like a bouquet of citrus and hops. Wonderful. Not at all what I was expecting.

Tons of fruit and hops. Grapefruit lingers in the end with a pretty nice bitter. Reminds me of a malty IPA. If more barleywines were like this, I would like them a lot more!

Big thick malty mouthfeel.

Extremely drinkable, which is dangerous for such a high abv beer. Hard to believe this is 9.5%.

Purchased this at the brewery back in September. Shared as part of the 'goop vertical/horizontal at Goose Island's January BA Meetup. Served in a pint-shaped taster glass.

A - Pours with a finger-plus of off-white head that settles to a persistent cap, leaving behind spotty lace. The body is a semi-transparent golden orange color.

S - This one is still pretty hoppy. Lots of lemon, grapefruit, and pine at the forefront. There's some rye flavor in the backbone, but the malt is very low in sweetness or complexity.

T - The taste is a little more smoothed out. Starts with bready malts, a kiss of rye zest, and then a lemon/citrus hop finish that has mild residual bitterness.

M - Smooth medium body, medium carbonation, dry finish, and a touch of alcohol warmth.

D - This was the definitely the best of the three, and I'd certainly give it another try. However, I think it will go down the same path as the other 'goops. These are too reliant on hop aroma to be cellaring beers - the malt backbones just aren't very interesting. Not sure why you'd bother to make high-ABV beers based on different grains that can't last 2-3 years in the cellar...

A - champagne colored with a white two finger head. Quickly turns into a few millimeter ring around the edge of the glass, light lacing.

S - Sweet sticky, citrusy hops. Lots of grapefruit and sweet sugar. Malt profile is peeking out a little, perhaps a hint of rye

T - Starts off with an assault of hops: handfuls of grapefruit, some mango and mandarin orange. The rye is somewhat missing; I am picking up a little spicyness, which I think may be the rye in this ryewine interpretation. However, the malt profile is great - beginning has a slight caramel sweetness, then notes of cracker, biscuit and hints of nut and bread. While the malt profile is nice, the hops are king here. The finish is bitter grapefruit which lingers for a bit. Can't say the rye is very pronounced at all - its just a hoppy barleywine.

M - medium to thick body, a touch on the syrupy side with crisp carbonation.

D - Very high. I thought this may be a sipper, but was exactly the opposite. Ended up polishing off the bomber with a friend in about 15 minutes. The alcohol is wonderfully hidden and the flavors are addicting.

In my opinion, this is drinking perfectly now. My second bottle within the past 2 weeks. I think its against my better judgment, but I may wait and open my last bottle in 6 or 12 months.

A- A deep, bright rube orange liquid with just the right amount of haze to it to give it a nice crystal ball effect. The bone white head is very creamy and settles to a craggy covering. Leaves great lacing as it works its way down the glass. Perfect.

S- Strong pine, grapefruit, and grass up front with some mango, pineapple, and caramel floating around in the background. Aromatic and a bit pine heavy.

T- Lots of pine and caramel with some citrus and a touch of pineapple and mango. Very bitter and pine heavy.

M- A great body but the lingering bitterness is a bit off-putting.

D- Bitter and tasty. A bit of a sipper. I see this aging for quite some time.

This seems like a nice brew to enjoy while brewing. It pours a hazed tawny-orange topped by over a finger of tan-ish cream foam. The nose comprises mandarin oranges, ruby red grapefruit, toffee, red apples, and red grapes. The taste holds notes of grapefruit, light pine, caramel, sourdough, and light black pepper. The body is a straight medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a smooth feel. Overall, a very nice barleywine, though I was hoping for more of a spicy rye quality, especially with a title like ryewine. Still, it was pretty tasty.
