"Imperial India Pale Ale." Less than three weeks old. 1 pint 6 fl oz brown glass bottle with interesting label and art and distinctive colorful branded pressure cap served into a conical Samuel Smith's pint glass in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Acquired in a trade with the very gracious tcman128 - thanks again, buddy! Expectations are quite high given the brewery and its reputation.

Served cold, straight from the fridge. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: Pours a four finger beige colour head of nice soft complexion, good thickness, nice cream, slightly frothy consistency, and good (~4-5 minute) retention for the high ABV. Sticky consistent even lacing clings to the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Body colour is a transparent yellow-copper. Vibrant. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. Spot-on for the style. I'm looking forward to trying it.

Sm: Floral hops are dominant, with some accompanying light grapefruit and soapy hop character; this may have spent too long in primary. Pale malts. Caramel is a bit too present. Some piney hop character. No yeast character or alcohol comes through. Tangerine. Mango, pineapple, other tropical fruit hop esters. Not ideal choices of hops for my particular tastes, but decent for the style. Clean and pleasant. An average strength aroma.

T: Mango, pineapple, tangerine - all tropical fruit hop esters, and not to my tastes for the style. Too sweet, with a caramel malt undertone. Light grapefruit. Hop bitterness does come through, compromising the balance. Clean. Not a fan of the sticky malty aspect blended with the sweet fruity notes. The pineapple in particular really kills the flavour profile for me; I'm not liking the hop choices made here but I can see where others with different tastes would really enjoy this. Pine. Light bready malts. Old orange juice comes to mind. I'm really just not big on this type of hop character.

Mf: Smooth and wet. Good thickness. Overcarbonated. Sticky. Chewy. Suits the flavour profile decently. Clean. Decent presence on the palate. Sugary. Good body.

Dr: This one just wasn't for me personally, but I don't doubt that it's brewed well. It's largely redolent of old orange juice mixed with tropical fruit notes that don't at all appeal to me - whether in an imperial IPA or not. I didn't find it well-balanced and I won't be having it again, but it does hide its ABV well and I'll happily finish this bottle by myself. Glad to have tried it, but it's just not suited for my personal tastes. Disappointed in the beer, but not for any issues with the quality of the brewing. Looking forward to trying more Three Floyds' IPAs which are hopefully more what I'm after in an imperial IPA.

On tap at Apex for Gigantic Beer Week

A: Golden color with a semi-opaque look. Fluffy white head.

N: Pineapple, mango, pine, and caramel. Pretty solid nose for hops but it's not terribly complex either.

T: Fairly sweet once again. Lots of dried pineapple and some pine, but there's no mid-level to this. Biscuit and a slight bitterness. Better balance to this, but it's missing a certain...special..something.

M: Dry and medium-heavy. Sticks to the palate without destroying it.

O: A good beer I'd drink again, but it's not outstanding in its style.

very bitter. very malty. overpowering fruit and citrus taste. Almost overwhelmingly fruity taste at the beginning. slightly mild after taste. alcohol very well hidden. Delicious beer; I would definitely recommend trying this one. I head it is 10x on-tap.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from bomber into a Russian River pint glass.

A: Apricot in color. Very hazy with some "floaters" typical of many high IBU beers. Forms a two-finger white head, moderate carbonation.

S: Biscuit malts, grassy hops with some mild tropical fruit and resin character.

T: Sweet bready malt (minimal to no caramel flavors), tropical fruity and citrus (grapefruit) rind hop bitterness. Bitter in the hang with just enough balancing fruity sweetness.

M: Lighter body for a DIPA. Good carbonation, and the alcohol is quite well-hidden.

O: Not the freshest bottle, but I'm impressed. Definitely will want to revisit a time or two. Recommended.

Pours a cloudy amber, with lots of sediment. Seems to have been on the shelves for too long. No lace, either.

Still, the aroma is wonderfully hoppy. I get big citrus and tropical fruit like mango and floral notes. Exquisite!

Taste is quite hoppy, as expected, with more tropical fruit and tangy wet citrus. Malts are strong, too, and even if this wasn't too fresh, it's still a formidable beer.

22oz bomber

A - golden. Pours a pretty large amount of white foam, 2.5 inches or so, sticks around for a good while. Medium to large amount of lacing.

S - Lots of citrus peel and some tropical fruit, mangoes mostly. Plenty of floral hops in the background.

T - Loads of bitter orange and sweeter tropical notes. As it warms up the malt shows up a little bit, very neutral with a sweetness to it. Lots of citrus, grapefruit and lemons in addition to the orange. There is also a good bit of peach and maybe apricot (which is mentioned on the label, so maybe thats just suggestion) Finishes with more bitter citrus.

M - really good. Medium thickness, light/medium carbonation.

O - a great IPA. For whatever reason, I want to dislike 3floyds, but its undeniable that their beers are great. You can see some of the bloodlines of zombie dust here, but really packs a bitterness whallop that ZD doesnt have. Overall, a great IPA.

Pours a beautiful cascading effervescent golden amber. White head and sticky lacing throughout.

The aroma is fantastic. Big tropical citrus (papaya, grapefruit, guava, mango) front and malt.

How do we go from such a tropical smelling quaff to the flavors of onion and garlic. Got the sweet malt and a piney bitterness going on.

Carbonation is low and bitterness lasts.

I'm not getting the high IBU count here. Took this on the advice that this is close to Zombie Dust...quite not true. Not seeing the hype here, matter of fact I'm disappointed. Now I know why this is always on the shelves throughout Chicagoland. Dreadnaught is better at a lower price. This is not a juicy grapefruit, but rather a pine cone bomb in an onion patch. One good thing though--it is drinkable. This reminds me of Stone's Enjoy By brews. I will not be buying this in the future.

Poured a rich orange with a slight half finger of white head that quickly dissipated leaving slight lacing. Scents of citrus hops, malt, slight white grape and hints of molasses. Flavor begins with a hit of dry malt, overwhelmed by bitter hops, moves into grapefruit pith and citrus hops and finishes dry with a bitter grapefruit pith flavor and aftertaste. There is a slight sweetness from the malt but it is overwhelmed by the hops. Definitely a hop bomb. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with moderate carbonation, quite easy to drink. It hides it's alcohol fairly well. A very good hop bomb IIPA. An even more hop forward Hop Stoopid, beyond Hopslam, Ruination, Hoptimum and 90 Minute and it even comes across as more hop forward than 120 Minute, as it lacks much of the sweetness. A great hophead DIPA, I am glad I finally got to try it. Just a shame about that distribution.

Appearance: Peachy orange. Great lacing and color. Very murky like a witbier. Unusal for an IPA...let alone a double.

Smell: Pine, cookie, honey, and fruit (lime?).

Taste/Mouthfeel: Grapefruit and tons of bourbon. An excellent gateway for IPA drinkers looking for somthing stronger but still familiar. Bourbon makes this a bit too light-bodied for a double.

Overall: Surprised I haven't heard of this more.

Decent short lived off white head with some lace. Golden with lots of haze and particulates. Aroma of baked bread, passion fruit, with a bit of cattiness. Strong carbonation with a medium body. Earthy/herbal hops with a fair amount of sugary sweetness. Strong bitter finish with a noticeable amount of alcohol.

This is my first APW, thanks to mpayne5! Wow! I am loving this stuff! It feels like the wolf on the label just bit my face off. This stuff is not for beginners! A true citrus-hop bomb indeed. Pours a hazy orange-copper, with a thin creamy head that dissipates fairly quickly which is fine with me. Where do I start with the aroma? The only way I can describe it, is like freshly sliced fruit salad sitting on a bed of pine needles. I gotta say, this is one of the best smelling DIPA's I have ever had the pleasure of drinking. To say this beer is a hop-bomb is an understatement! Big hop's way up front, yet sweet and malty on the finish, and it tickles my nose like champagne. I can't say enough good things about this beer, If you see it, get it! If you don't get it in your area, trade! I know I am gonna, again!

well...here we go. FFF - couldnt resist the purchase.
purchased this bottle for $9.99 at Joes in Richmond, Indiana. Its a bit dusty...no date on the bottle.
Poured into tulip glass. Pours a slightly hazy golden copper...thick white head.
Crazy peach and fruity hop aromas with a big malt backbone. Like a DFH 90 min...but more fruity..
Taste is big fruity hops...light fruit like peach or pear with some citrus or pineapple notes; followed by a bit of a malt finish - like vienna or something bready. Big fruity finish...
Its a very easy drinker and you really dont notice the ibu or abv here...not an amazing DIPA...just too malty for me to be amazing. I cant get through the bomber so i switched to a two hearted ale...so much better...
This is a brew where i dont get the hype...

Appearance: Pours a rich, hazy golden orange with a big three fingers of creamy, fluffy off-white foam.

Smell: A wonderful bouquet of soft, ripe mango, juicy pineapple, and faint strawberry greet the nose. There's also a light yeasty, cracker-like aroma hiding under the blanket of fruity hops. Quite heavenly.

Taste: Bright, tangy grapefruit, tangerine, orange marmalade, pine, some fruity esters and a touch of honey with a caramel malt backing. Sugary with maybe just a little white wine characteristic lurking about.

Mouthfeel: Medium to heavier bodied and lightly crisp with incredible smoothness. Sort of creamy and a bit oily and chewy.

Overall, this was an exceptional imperial IPA from famed brewery Three Floyds. I had this back to back with their Dreadnaught and Arctic Panzer Wolf came out the clear winner for me. It has a wonderfully complex, fruity aroma and flavor with unbeatable smoothness for a 9% beer. Juicy, sweet, and well-balanced.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a Three Floyds Teku.

A- pours a hazy golden with a 2" white head. Big wall of lacing remains on the glass.

S- honey, caramel, big citrus (pineapple, orange), with some citrus rind

T- caramel, light toast, honey, pineapple and grapefruit, citrus rind and pine.

M- medium body and carbonation. Effervescent feel.

O- very good dipa. Surprised I have never reviewed this beer yet! Very nice sweet and citrus balance.

Celebration drink this. Poured from a 22 oz bomber into a large snifter.

A solid pale, orange juice color. Very hazy and full of cloud. Just less than a finger thick head with good retention. Good enough lacing on the sides. Some minor bubbles. Totally opaque.

Aroma has almost every hop note that i have ever noticed - ok not every but almost all. Earthy, herbal. A lot of flower notes and good amount of grapefruit. It is like a sap coming out of hops.
If you take out this wonderful and enticing aroma that reminds a lot of hops it could be mistaken for grapefruit or orange juice.

Flavor is just awesome. Hits hard with citrus and earthy notes. A lot of herbal character in the beer. Grapefruit is abundant as well. Malt in the middle but the ending is super bitter. Excellent bitterness overall as such. Justifies its 100 IBUs. Very well hidden alcohol. Seems like i am drinking some kind of citrus juice. Bitterness is palate wrecking. So make this your last beer of the day/night. Hurts the tongue not very severely mainly due to controlled carbonation, but the bitterness is still huge. Aftertaste lingers on forever. A bit piney towards the end.

Feel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Very slight alcohol warmth. Excellent brew for a hop head like me. Some oily and resiny touch.

Go for it. It is big and bold. You won't be disappointed.

Pours hazy orange with a small white head. Smell is earthy, bready, buttery, slightly citrusy. Taste is also buttery, lots of pine, some orange, some mango some apricot, thick texture with a nice bitter bite. I'm a big fan of all things Floyd's but I would rather grab a dreadnaught any day, this is a great beer, very intense thick buttery hop profile. This been lives up to the name, worth a try for sure

Appearance- beautiful amber color, 1 finger loose head. High Density suspended particulates.

Aroma- Deep citrous Forrest, breakfast marmalade on a English muffin, slight pine. Tiny hint of the gravity to come.

Taste: Front tongue bite, followed by pine & citrous, slowly rolling front to back in volumptuous smoothness, leaving the tongue numbed & hopknockered.

Mouthfeel- Full bodied but not to viscous. Slowly gives way to the generous hopnessouty. Very conforting two row blanketing of the tongue.

Overall- A definite object of future beer searches. The 2-row & dextrose give way to beautiful hop notes right when your ready for them.

Poured into snifter

Appearance: Slightly murky orange with a little peach thrown in. A half finger white head that did not last long but a film lasted.

Aroma: Apricot, floral, and pine. Some white wine. A slight tropical fruity smell. Some citrus. And sweetness as well.

Taste: Floral, piney apricot. Very slight citrus. A little pineapple. Picked up a white wine characteristic, too. Sweetness with a slight bitterness throughout. As it warms, flavors become more piney apricot/peach with malts pulling through.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied. Carbonation is just a slight below medium. Bitterness in the finish is not as aggressive. It feels light for an Imperial IPA. It goes down smooth with no residual sticky or oily feeling.

Overall: A good Imperial IPA. It would please any hopheads.

22oz. bomber bottle with the usual kickass Three Floyd's label. The label was done by a tattoo artist and it shows it. This bottle had a bright red label with a large arctic blue wolf ripping right through the label. This isn't an ordinary wolf. This wolf looks like a hell hound. Don't stare directly into the wolf's red eyes. You will regret it. Above and below the wolf in arctic blue lettering is the name of the beer. Flanking the wolf is the Government warning and the beer's ingredients. I wish there was a bottled or brewed date on the bottle. Poured into a Cycle Brewing Snifter.

This arctic wolf was not arctic blue in color, but a beautiful hazy apricot orange. It was so hazy that I could barley see the silhouette of my fingers on the other side of the glass. On top of this orange brew was a small 1/4 of an inch bubbly porcelain white head of foam. Mediocre retention that left behind a small number of rings and spots around the glass. Nice color, but the head of foam was less than desirable.

Pouring the beer into the Snifter unleashed the strong scent of grapefruit and pine. It was more pine than grapefruit. Behind the pine and grapefruit wall was more citrus fruits and lightly bitter citrus hops. The citrus fruits consisted of some tangerine and a little lemon. I could detect some malt trying to come out, but the grapefruit and pine quickly covered it up and said "what malt?"

The taste wasn't hugely hopped up. It was hoppy, but not overly hoppy. The taste kicked off with the citrus hops. The hops then gave way to the grapefruit and pine resin. It loved the pine! The pine resin lasted for a while before some lemon, tangerine, and apricot moved in. After the fruits had their moment in the sun, the beer then finishes with a faint taste of toasted malt. Finally the malt was allowed to come out and play.

The mouthfeel was light to medium bodied and featured a nice lightly hoppy crispy aftertaste. I found more citrus hops, pine, grapefruit, lemon, and apricot in the aftertaste. The hops don't linger on. I guess the hops had some place to be.

I would like to thank lionssoccer for giving me the opportunity to try this Three Floyd's beer. I'm sure I don't have to tell you this but this was another nice Three Floyd's beer. It wasn't hugely hopped, but there was enough hops in this beer to keep you on your toes. This wasn't a beer that relied on a cool label. The beer was just as cool as the kick ass label.

Great IPA that serves as a great example of the style.

A - Golden yellow with lots of carbonation. Pours with a good head that fades quickly.

S - Warm (not sharp) initial smell that fades into a heavy caramel

T - Very smooth, with caramel overtones. Not a huge amount of bitterness, but a very satisfying, thirst quenching finish.

M - Great. Like I said, very smooth but quenching. Doesn't have much of an after taste - or just doesn't change as it fades away. Fades somewhat quick.

O - Really fantastic beer actually. Its simply really pleasing. It satisfies my thirst for an IPA's bitterness but doesn't stick around too long. Each taste is incredibly consistent. The smooth feel works well with the caramel. Fantastic beer.

Poured from a bomber into a chalice. Hazy, golden goodness with a finger of white head that dissipates quickly. Very nice lacing. Looks like a fantastic DIPA. Let's have a smell.

Very nice. Nose is juicy-fruit, lemon, fresh-cut grass, pine. A little malty breadiness as it warms. But how does she drink?

Wow. Hop explosion on a Friday night. That's what I'm talking about. Time to wake-up those taste buds on siesta since my last Sucks four days ago. This stuff good. Delicious. And hides the 9% well. After 22 oz. of this it may be hard to move-on to something else.

Medium mouthfeel. Easy to drink.

Overall an excellent beer. As usual, the Floyd's have not let me down. Think I'll have more.

Poured from a 650 ml bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice.

Appearance: Pours a somewhat hazy golden orange with a moderate amount of rising bubbles. One finger of white head that settles into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a good amount of lacing around the glass.

Smell: A lively citrus forward aroma with a nice complex mix of fruit esters. Big hop scent upfront with hints of citrus orange peel, pineapple, mango, grapefruit, apricot, tangerine, and lemon. Also some grassy hops and pine resin spice. Some subtle undertones of white wine characteristics with a hint of grape. A fair amount of sugar. Bready soft malts with hints of cracker, biscuit, caramel, and yeast. A little scent of honey is also in the mix. Very good aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a ripe and juicy taste of citrus hop fruit esters. Big taste of ripe and bitter hops upfront with notes of citrus orange, mango, pineapple, grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, and apricot. Along with the citrus is a taste of spicy pine resin and grass. A little hint of white grapes. Soft bready malts with notes of cracker, biscuit, caramel, grain, and yeast. Some sugar and honey adds some more sweetness. Very citrus forward, tropical, and juicy. A great West Coast style IPA taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium to heavy bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy, chewy, and fairly oily. Alcohol heat is hidden very well.

Overall: Another great imperial IPA from Three Floyds. Great tropical citrus hop flavors.

Into my chalice from the bomber:

A: clear golden colored body leaving a half centimeter white foamy head. Light foamy lacing coats and slides to spider web movement.

S: citrusy and slightly grassy coming through in a dry earthy sort of way, hops are there a bit.

T: citrusy combined nicely with the malts and hops.

M: medium with barely any sharpness on the tongue, big wow, here, nice and smooth yet crisp as the beer goes down. It leaves a bitter and sticky aftertaste and a dry finish. I'd say this is fairly sessionable despite the fairly high ABV on it, I'm not feeling the 9% just yet, or tasting it.

O: this is my first one by Three Floyds and I'm really looking forward to trying the rest. This is superb for its style and spectacular to me. As it warms, its really a citrus forward DIPA, in my opinion.

I guess. Another IPA, another problem. I mean, Raul knows that it is palatable, but on a daily basis of drinking Pliny, Nelson, AleSmith IPA, Ruination, Racer 5, Sculpin... Blah blah blah blah! I can sip on it, but why should Raul care? Raul agrees, but he ain't stoked.

Appearance: Murky orange in color. Served with a finger or two of white head. Amazing lacing and awesome retention/cling. 5/5

Smell: Grapefruit, pine, orange juice, lemon zest, tropical citrus, pine and herbaceous, fresh grass. 4.5/5

Taste: Juicy tropical citrus hop bomb! Orange, grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, and mango. Ample lemonade and bitter pine. Sharp lemon-zest flavor. Faint hint of onion. 4.75/5

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, medium carbonation. Juicy mouthfeel. Bitter, slightly sweet. The mouthfeel here is directly comparable to Ghandi Bot. 4.5/5

Overall: One of the best IPA out there when fresh. I prefer this over Dreadnaught.

Cost: $10.99 for a 22 oz (bomber) bottle.
