My first blonde Barleywine. This is much more hop forward throughout, with less sweetness than typical Barleywines. As it warms the alcohol comes out, but is masked early on. A terrific beer than I would gladly drink again!

Orange wax bottle. Alcohol smell was non existent. Fruity notes remained in the nose. Poured a very hazy copper color. Taste was dark fruit. Cherry, plum, prune with a nice sweetness. I greatly enjoyed this. The hops obviously faded and this almost resembled a quad, but it was fantastic nonetheless.

Had this on tap as a 9 oz pour that in beer equivalent may have cost as much as my left nut, but

Definitely a hop forward barleywine but I really enjoyed it. Pours a dark amber with a thick creamy head.

The hops are very pronounced and the alcohol heat is present but tucked behind the hop burst. A great med-full full body mouth feel. Overall a good barley wine, even if it is slightly off the "traditional" flavor profile and more along three floyds hop forward MO.

I got this beer for the first time this year at the brewery. I allowed it to age a few months but I just couldn't wait any longer to rip off that purple dress!

A - Deep dark amber. Pours thick. Big fine white head erupting out of the elixir with great lacing.

S - Initially the citrus hops just dominate the stage. There is some malt, caramel, and fruit but the hops are big and fresh. Very much more like a DIPA than a barley wine but I love it.

T - On the palate this beer is terrific it hits hard with the rich malt character you would expect from the style and then the pound of hops hits the middle of your tongue. On the backside there is the caramel and dark fruits but the hop bitterness hits the ringer. I'm sure that without the pungent, delicious hops there would be an alcohol tone but it is totally overridden. As it warms to 70 degrees the hops try to give way to the behemoth of the barleywine with the sweet malt, caramel, and raisins.

M - High mouth-feel with moderate carbonation. It is heavier on the palate but with all of the hops on the front end and the quenching bitterness you can enjoy your fruitcake and eat it too.

Overall, this beer stays true to 3 Floyds' mantra of hop first ask questions later and this is by far my favorite barleywine. Though this beer is more like a DIPA I give it it's due since it does have the rich malt character that you would expect from a barleywine but just with a ton of hops to go with it. If you want a true maltier experience I would not get this but if you like hops and the accompanying barleywine character then I strongly suggest when this becomes available to grab some!

Absolutely delicious Barleywine. Balanced and unique.

Dark amber with lacing that covers the entire glass all the way down. A full 4 finger head via vigorous pour. Takes about 5 minutes to subside and still remains about a half finger.

The smell is distinguishable from several very feet away. Bubblegum, pine, wine, cherries, hops and grapefruit.

The taste and feel are exactly what I expect out of a hop forward Barleywine. Full bodied, bursting with flavor that begs for another sip. Alcohol is present, but not overbearing. Just right.

Better than Bigfoot in my opinion, absolutely worth a purchase if available and one who enjoys American BWs.

Very good beer, has the delicious notes you except from a fine barley wine such as toffee, raisins, dark fruit, has an unexpected touch of fruitiness in there reminiscent of apples and/or pears. isn't overly sweet or boozy. Slightly metallic in the finish. very good take on the style, just not quite sure i'd go through the effort and expense it took to get it again.

Appearance - deep honey, hazy apple cider with loose carbonation. Rich, foamy, caramel colored head.

Aroma - Prominent citrus hops with bready malts. Very fruity.

Taste - the aroma matches up with the taste. Fruit, hops, malt. And alcohol on the back end; mild for the style - these guys know how to brew.

Feel - Bitter and sweet. Sweet and bitter. Feels so good.

Overall - great barley wine. Hoppy, fruity, dangerously strong.

This beer isn't bad, I'm just not a fan of the hoppiness. As I figure out my tastes, I can easily say that strong citrus hops aren't my thing. As far as hippy beers go, this isn't awful.

This brew was served on tap at the Three Floyds Brewpub in Munster, Indiana. It arrived in a stubby generic chalice. It showed a deep apple cider coloring, sporting a half finger tall head of burnt caramel foam that was gone by the time the glass settled onto the table. In its wake a single sheet of tan lacing was left. Chill haze reduced clarity, and punctate sediment was noted. Carbonation appeared to be a bit high. The aroma warmed the soul, offering flashes of intense citric hops, corn and cola syrup, pale and deeply roasted caramel malts, green grassiness, milder piney resins, black pepper spice of harsh booze, sawdust, burnt amber grain, red hot steel, Styrofoam, soft phenolic plastics, and leather polish. Following through the taste buds was freshly poured concrete, bubblegum esters, immense vodka booziness, corny adjuncts, fusel chemical and Magic Marker phenols, white chalk, pineapple and nectary fruity and citric hops, heavy caramel roasted maltiness, daisy pollen florals, mild wheatiness, and green pea vegetal twinge. The aftertaste breathed especially of biting green grassiness and dusty banana bread esters. The body was heavy and syrupy with every sip, while carbonation sat moderately high. Nice slurp and smack accompanied this feel, but creaminess or frothiness was rather lost to the mouth swirl. Massive chalky dryness turned into involuntary puck across the mouth. The abv was big, but stylistically appropriate; it warmed you more and more with each sip, which occurred at a slower pace.

Overall, this was a surprisingly and remarkably hopped beer aromatically. I guess we weren’t quite sure what to expect for a “blonde barleywine”, but for some reason a major hoppy component wasn’t it. It was pleasant, translating well into flavoring. Sadly, it remained way up front in the mouth, getting battered by waves of sharp booze and heavy grain. This introductory taste actually made us think of a “Super Zombie Dust”. It was so hopped!! Again, however, you then hit this monstrous wall of bitters, puckers, and chemicals. All that said, we’ve had DIPAs that are bigger malt bombs than this barleywine, but the booze keeps you in line with your thinking; at least this works when remembering style. This beer wasn’t bad, but it just kind of took us for a loop following that description. If you want a big, big beer that isn’t afraid to show you what it is, then this is the ticket for you, our friend.

Appearance- Pours a dark, murky reddish amber in color with a 1 inch thick white head that slowly fades to leave a nice thin coating across the top of the beer.

Smell- The nose is very hop forward with pine and citrus. Hints of dark fruit and a barely perceptible malt presence.

Taste- Starts off with toffee and graham crackers and rockets its way into orange zest, plums and pine. Finishes with a spicy heat.

Mouthfeel- Heavy body, medium carbonation and somewhat dry.

Overall- An exceptional representation of a barleywine in my opinion. FFF always seems to hit home runs for me.

2013 Orange Wax. Color: Nice deep amber, ruby tonez. Smells like caramel and rye spice, maybe red fruits on the tail. Smell follows on through the palate- nice caramel sweetness balanced by that rye spice, with something like apple acidity, fruits. Bit of booze, but I suspect the age has mellowed it considerably.

I'm just not getting this as a Barley wine. I smell the signature Three Floyds hops, but it isn't as sweet as a BW usually is. The nose is nice for a big, hoppy non-BW. Confusing.

The taste is, once again, bit fat hoppiness typical of the brewery- sharp and tangy. I'm STILL not getting this as a BW. A bit too thin, though the mouthfell is fine, for anything other than a BW. I get the malts, but can't pin down any caramel notes on this.

If you're looking for a sweet, thick BW- go elsewhere. If you're looking to sample thru the Three Floyds taste catalogue this one is a tick worth trying. Once.

I'd say this would be a good candidate to age or have as a barrel aged brew. As it is, it is a hop bomber that hits just a bit strong for the style.

2008 bottle; about 6 years old, cellared at 55 degrees F.

Dark amber color, pretty, with no head.

Smells like caramel malt, sweet grain, and touches of fresh golden apple and pineapple; quite attractive.

On the palate, a cohesive blend of sweet malty and hoppy flavors. Caramel, earth, light tobacco, light fruit. Good depth of flavor and assertive bitterness. Long, bitter, earthy finish. Balanced and tasty.

Cushy, slick, silky texture.

Seems to have aged well; no overt oxidization. Good stuff.

Deep amber body with only a thin off white head that quickly dissipates. Big hop notes on the nose along with some brown butter/burnt caramel. Definitely an american barleywine. This is like a DIPA with the malt bill kicked up for added body and sweetness. It works very well. This is surprisingly drinkable and almost refreshing at such a high ABV. Definitely worthwhile for hopheads out there.

Orange wax, 2013 vintage. Tasted 24 May 2014.

Pours a rich rusty amber-brown. Half a finger of yellowish head, okay retention and good lacing.

Smell is big and beefy. Caramel malts, hops, and alcohol. Leathery, herbal, and biting. But all in a nice way.

Taste is bruisingly strong and bitter. I don't find much else in there, unfortunately, as the bitter of the hops and the alcohol mask any pleasant flavors the malts might bring. Tastes like a hopped-up barleywine, but not anythig I really want to drink all that much of.

Feel is good. Medium-heavy body, enough carbonation, lasting.

A decent hoppy barleywine. The big problem is that it's lacking anything particularly interesting. No flavors that really grab me, not particularly well balanced. It's what I'd expect, but nothing more.

2013 Orange Wax

A- Pours a deep amber with ruby and orange accents coming through. Dense dirty white head that does everything it can not to fade. Terrific lacing

S- Caramel, toffee, toasted bread, and charred malts all come through amidst the fruity, floral notes. Delightful, yet not robust.

T- Some time has certainly helped smooth this one out. Flavor profile is similar to the nose in that it is tempered but becoming. Starts with the rich, charred malts before moving on to a layer of sweet, chewy caramel and tropical fruits

M- Probably the weakest aspect for me. While the booze is mild, the body is on the lighter side. A rather pathetic carbonation level. Sticky though.

O- Not bad. Everything seems to come together nicely, but nothing really "pops".

Blue wax to tulip.

A. Dark copper with amber hues. Cloudy. 2 finger egg shell head that retreats to a fine bubble rim. Nice laces.

S. Moderately fragrant. Big time floral hops w/ a citrus finish. This beast is certainly going to be a hoppy barley wine (big surprise).

T. A little sweet, a lot bitter. Strong hops flavor with a certain presence of barley wine = apples, plums, figs, malts, pears, and persimmons.

M. Very thick. High carbonation. Fairly smooth.

O. Very nice. This is certainly a 3F ale in respect tot the level of hops. Which are very high. This is a great ale to share. Very strong and very well crafted. I certainly recommend this ale.

On tap at Tipsy Cow in Madison, WI. 10oz poured into a tulip glass today, 3/25/2014.

App- dark brown body with a one finger white head, decent lacing nothing special

Smell- citrus, grapefruit, orange, and some caramel. No mistake though this is hoppy as hell and not close to being true to the style.

Flavour- super hoppy, dank and bitter with a lot of grapefruit qualities and a fairly minimal caramel toffee contribution. This is not subtle at all.

Mouthfeel- medium bodied, good carbonation, nothing special. Fairly bitter nothing much else and very sweet here. Dry and sweet finish.

Overall- not that special of an American barleywine. Overly hopped as you'd expect from a Three Floyds beer.

2014 – Blue wax

A: Poured into a snifter the head built a modest half finger tall. Off white, khaki looking, fell after about 30 seconds. Swirling the beer produces slow falling alcohol legs. The beer is a very haze, dark woody mahogany color with a reddish tint. The lacing left on the side of the glass is just a few small streaks.

S: Fresh smelling hop aroma with citrus and musty pine. A noticeable sweetness coming through from fruity yeast esters and malt character. Caramel and stone fruit with some ethanol.

T: Strong grapefruit and citrus hop bitterness gives way to a sweet malt profile. Toffee, syrup, candy sugar and caramel notes. The hop flavor evolves on the pallet to a more dank pine flavor with some tropical fruit (citra?). The balance is down the middle surprisingly, if this wasn't so fresh I think the malt would win the balance game, but I'm liking the balance of the fresh Behemoth.

M: Big thick body with much residual sweetness. Alcohol warming is there but not overpowering. Carbonation is lower with some stickyness left on the tongue.

O: Don't know why you would age this beer, fresh is the way to go. Fresh hop aroma, great bitterness, it's bassicly a DIPA with a bigger malt body.

2014 vintage (blue wax). 22oz bottle poured into a snifter. Pours a deep hazy auburn with some sediment; fluffy khaki head that slowly fades leaving great retention and sticky lacing. The aromas are hop forward. Smells like a DIPA. Some tropical notes with pineapple leading the way. Lots of fresh citrus. Lots of grapefruit and orange. Some berries. Some caramel and cocoa too. The flavors are on the sweeter side, but there's still a nice bitterness to this one. Lots of sweet fruits. Some dark fruits are in the mix as well. Some raisins and plums are noticeable. Subtle hints of toffee and butterscotch. Solid malt backbone blends harmoniously with the hops. More caramel and cocoa in the flavors. Slightly spicy. Some resin. There's an extremely subtle warmth to this one, but it's perfect. It's definitely not hot or boozy. Very smooth and balanced. The mouthfeel is very nice. It's full-bodied with creamy active carbonation. Fluffy stuff. It's dangerously drinkable.

This is a very impressive brew. It's definitely hop forward and has alot of DIPA characteristics, but there's no question that it's a barleywine. It's pretty pricey, but it's well crafted. I really like this one fresh, but age will not hurt it.

Orange-waxed 2013 bottle pours deep red-amber with a decent head.
Attractive aroma is a bit too flowery, giving a hint of perfume.

Alcohol is partly hidden, but still drinks like 10% ABV.

Feel: a little hot on the tongue, this would no doubt benefit from some aging.
Medium body and carbonation.

2012 vintage consumed in Jan. '14.

Hazy but still translucent copper-colored liquid, with a small off-white head that retained as a thick ringlet and dotted the glass with lacing. Aroma of thick sweet malts, and somewhat off-putting old resinous hop oils, some neutral alcohol. On the palate, caramel malts, brown sugar bubblegum, some candied fruit and more of the resinous notes detected in the aroma, hints of acetone. Hmm. Medium bodied with a bit more carbonation than expected. It was good, but not overall what I expect from a barleywine, and I wasn't really sold on it.

22oz blue wax bomber 2014 series

Pours a nice copper amber color a very thin head

Smells very sweet almost burgundy like apples

Not as fruity as it smells a bold first impression the hops and barley hit simultaneously but the hops as 3f hops tend to stick around burnt caramel, heavily hopped but hard to determine variety

Bold character masks high alcohol content, reminds me of a Rye PA I've had in the past but much stronger

A great barleywine for hopheads not sure what to pair it with great by itself but by the time I'm done with this bomber Ill be bombed.
