Bomber into a matching FFF teku. The brew appears a very dark brown color with a finger of khaki head. Rising bubbles of carbonation maintain a thin film across the top of the brew. As the cap fades, it leaves some spots of lacing effect on the glass. A swirl revives about a finger back to the surface. When held to the light, the brew shows a brilliant color of ruby clarity through the body.

The aroma is a bit nutty blending with a grainy quality and a suggestion of chocolate covered raisins. There is almost a lactose sort of milky sweetness across the backend of the nose that fades into a faint oxidized touch. As it warms up, a bit more focus on dark fruity aspects emerge (plum, dates, more raisins) but it never smells like it is the listed 10% abv.

The taste pretty much reiterates the aromatics. Chocolate covered raisins, a hint of coffee bitterness blends into almost a milk chocolate sweetness. Some raisins, plums, prunes and dates. Some nutty grain flavoring persists into the aftertaste. Each time I take a sip, there is a hint of fruity alcohol flavoring but it never comes out in a way that suggests it is as strong as the label lists.

This is a medium to fuller bodied brew with a moderate amount of carbonation. It is pretty darn easy drinking for 10% but is lacking a bit in character. I am surprised by how linear this brew is. Pretty much just a strong brown ale with not much else to offer. I dont know how I let this much time slip by before opening this, perhaps it was better when fresh?

Brown body, short light beige head that leaves a collar. Nice lacing left behind.

Almost a hazelnut aroma. Slight oxidation on the nose.

Malty sweet, roasty. Potpourri-like concoction of floral notes, but better tasting than that sounds. Low hop profile, again with the "aged" flavor. Well hidden alcohol for 10%abv

Smooth mouthfeel, lower but adequate carbonation.

Everyone enjoyed it. Dont know if you'd want to hang on to Popskull any longer though. Shared with two huge FFF and DFH fans.

I had this beer poured froma bomber into a snifter.

A: Deep Brown Hue, Passes Very Little Light, Off White Head, Some Lacing

S: Bourbon, Maple, Raisins, Molasses

T: Raisins, Mild Bourbon, Mild Molasses

M: Decent Carbonation, Medium Bodied, Mildly Boozy, Somewhat Watery

Overall, A decent brown barrel aged beer but the smell was better than the taste.

Just tried the popaskull and it was lovely. I'm slightly confused about why this beer pours a deep brown with the previous beer being a light belgain pale. The nose is toasty caramel with almost no spice and the taste follows. The aftertaste is a slightly milk chocolate with a toasty finish. Very nice, but not as good as the popaskull

I picked this one up through CrazyNelson a couple of years ago and decided that it's time to pop the Popskull. Review is from notes taken on 3/16/2012 and poured from the bottle to a chalice from New Holland. I'd like to say that the smell is so robust that I didn't even get the cap the entire way off and I could still smell it... This. Is. Going. To. Be. Awesome.

Appearance: Pour is a dark cola brown and it starts with a one finger tan head that fizzles almost immediately to a thin wisp on the surface; body is murky and pretty much opaque, but there are some lighter mahogany highlights near the edges of the glass; where I can see into the drink, there is still plenty of carbonation;

Smell: Smell is nice and strong -- kind of musty and mulchy, bit of leather; a lot of strong and sweet malt with a toasty graininess to it.

Taste: I think that if every brewery did brown ales this way, it would be one of my favorite styles. Big flavor that is bold, robust and distinct -- some cocoa and powdery chocolate, bit of a malted milk flavor as well; mulchy and grainy presence with just a touch of soft, smooth leather; perhaps a very faint hint of dark and dry raisins; very faint presence of alcoholic vapor on the breath, but for being 10% alcohol, it's really well blended.

Mouthfeel: Body is just shy of what I would consider to be medium in weight; carbonation is present, but not as strong as I thought it was going to be (not disappointed though -- it's not like it's flat or anything); a pretty slick and sticky coating is left on the palate and it hold all of the wonderful flavors well into the aftertaste; belly is left warm.

Overall: This beer is fantastic and they need to bring this big boy out of retirement. Great smell, even better flavors -- this is a year round beer. Bring it back! Bring it back! Bring it back!

A: Very dark brown, big bubbly head that quickly went away

S: Tons of barley, deep roastiness, malt and malt in chocolate
leather

T: Hits with a mouth full of leather, thin booze,
cigars leaves, tons of malt and barley with chocolate
coming through, spiciness

M: Medium but comes across thin.

O: Hit all the right malty roasty notes for me. Not overly hopped. Very drinkable
