Notes:
3 Floyd’s flagship beer, Alpha King is a big American pale ale that pours a deep amber with a creamy head. This ale is brewed with Centennial, Cascade, and Warrior hops giving it an intense citrus aroma and a crisp hoppy finish.

I have actually had this beer at the Three Floyds brewery. Doesn’t get much closer to the source than that! As a matter of fact, when we were leaving they were bottling beer that would literally be sold inside the brewpub. So yeah, it was fresh! I like this beer a LOT too, so I am stoked this is on the list.
The brewery is located in Indiana. It’s just south of Chicago, so if you are ever in the windy city stop by the brewery. It’s actually funny; it’s located in an industrial park. It doesn’t fit at all. And when you walk in, the place does not look like a place for beer but rather narcotics and marijuana. (I say that in the nicest way possible. If you have ever been there, you know what I am talking about.)
The beer smells incredible! There is so much going on. It’s the epitome of complex. For a beer that is often referred to as a blond, it’s not very… blond in the glass. It’s almost red, but once you take a sip it doesn’t matter what color it is.
The beer hits your palate and does somersaults down your throat. There is SO much going on, it’s hard to keep up. Perhaps I shall have another drink and try to explain what you experience here. At first, it’s a bit carbonated but that is quickly replaced with a sweet, almost dry mouthfeel. Then you are hit with sheer utter bitterness. But that’s okay… that is what makes this beer so darn good.
The beer itself is pretty low in alcohol content, which makes this a dangerous beer to fall in love with. But it’s got such a good aftertaste, I will drink until I can’t drink no more! Plus, the logo is sick. Sick and creepy! This is a great beer, and not what you expect from a beer made right here in the Hoosier state. Funny thing is, their Dark Lord is oftentimes voted as the best beer in the world. It’s also nearly impossible to get.

Poured from a bottle into my Hill Farmstead chalice.
A: Pours a hazy copper color with an inch of head, just a touch of lace.
S: Aroma is sickly sweet, unpleasant to me.
T: Very malty, unbalanced.
M: Sticky, tough to drink..
O: Really disappointing!

One of the few survivors (along with Gumballhead and Rabid Rabbit) of a shipment from IN to OK. My bottles of Dreadnaught and Panzer Wolf were not so fortunate to make it through the rough UPS ride. Sad...
A- One of the meanest looking pale ales i have seen. Pours a dark copper bordering on amber into my Spiegelau IPA glass. Creamy as can be light tan head of 1 finger. Lacing that is sticky as hell. The retention is equally impressive as a layer sticks around the whole time. Looks like I am in store for a great beer.
S- Tons of citrus notes all over the nose. Grapefruit, orange, lemon zest. Some bready character underneath. Touch of carmelized malts as well.
T- Hops all over again as the nose indicates. Toasted bread malts come through with a nice round of sweet caramel to support the hop platform. Nice amoutn of bitterness in the finish, but avoids any harsh astringency. Actually finds some way to be slightly clean and smooth.
M- Mid body makes this one a bit heavy for the style, so the drinkability is average at best. Fantastic carbonation though. Crisp and clean. Dry as expected.
O- Hoppier than most APAs, but quite enjoyable. A standard for the style. If there were no lable i would have assumed this one were an IPA.
