Appearance: Pours with a light body. About a finger of creamy lacing, which dissipated quickly. In the glass has a dark red, lighter brown color. Low carbonation.

Smell: The front is a dark fruity aroma, comes off with a deep cherry flavor. Rye malt comes through in the body and has a nice mixture of sweetness. Caramel and molasses continue to brighten the aroma.

Taste: The front is some active carbonation and milk chocolate. Some medium sweet malt hits in the body but quickly fades into a chalky oaky flavor. Dark fruits pop up in the body as well. The finish is hallow caramel and earthy tones. Medium dryness, but pretty unspectacular.

Mouthfeel: too light for a scotch ale. Chalky feeling is left lingering on the palette.

Overall: Probably a below average scotch ale. Not the complexity or darkness I look for. The aftertaste is forgettable and leaves something to be desired. A unique twist for a scotch ale more sure.

Thanks to Boilermakerryan for this one!

A - Pours a deep dark mahogany brown with nearly a finger of chocolate/caramel head. Retention is a bit weak, lacing is nearly non-existent.

S - Woody/sweet scotch flavors, chocolate malts, roasty/toasted malts, biscuit, mild grassy hops, and some raisin/fig type dark fruit flavors.

T - Sweet toasted caramel malts and quite a bit of dark fruit (plum and figs) initially. Woody flavors and slightly bitter grassy hops kick in along with the dark fruit flavors follow. Aftertaste is malty sweet and scotch like flavors.

M - Lightish bodied, a little too light for my liking for this style. Fairly heavily carbonated. On the other hand it is quite drinkable for the style.

O - Fairly simple flavors but well balanced and quite tasty. Not fantastic but nothing to scoff at either.

12oz bottle in a pint glass.

A- pours a dark amber color with deep red tones. 1-plus finger of creamy off-white colored head. Big rings of lacing. It has the "nitro" look as the head forms, cool.

S- earthy and roasty. Very strong malt nose with hints of toffee, coffee, caramel. Some sweets, some peat. Very Scottish!

T- it is malty sweet. Not as roasted as I'd have thought, yet the malts carry the beer. Some sweetmess from dark fruits as well.

M-Syrupy, very little carbonation (as observed in its appearance). Lots of body, hearty, not heavy.

O- I like tyhe style, I like this take on it.

Thanks for the extra bottle, Todd. Poured into a a nonic pint glass from a 12oz bottle. Had this before, but that bottle was slightly oxidized, so this is a better one.

Pours a deep reddish brown tinged color with about 1.5 fingers worth of head in the glass. Head retention is surprisingly low, descending rather rapidly in the glass and laving nothing but a thin ring behind by the end of consumption. Some bubbles, almost like cola or ice cream, pop at the top as it descends. Lacing is almost inexistent, as are bubbles. While it loses points on those factors, it is, I admit, and excellent color and take on the style, and is viscous and thickened enough to count as eye candy on its own. I've found this to be true of all FFF beers thus far, no matter how bad head retention usually is from their bottles.

The aroma is pretty awesome, consisting of sweetened, juicy red and dark fruits, ranging from raisins, plum forwardness, pruned dryness, figs, as well as slight earthy notes from the hop profile. The malts provide, as they should, a caramelized toasted sweetness that big and bold, but it does get a little too syrupy as this warms up. It actually eventually counteracts with the alcohol and makes things even *more* sweet as a result. As always with FFF, this contains a pungent hoppy, very grassy profile that adds a lot of character to the beer, which would otherwise be way too much on the malty, syrupy side.

The flavor consists mainly of a lot of the malty syrupy thickness and sweetness combined with brown sugar, slight molasses, prunes, raisins, dates (!), and a tad bit of orange peel and grassiness lurking underneath. Very juicy on the mouth, often to the point where this is very meal-like in the bottle - although definitely more "dessert-like" the more the sweetness continues to linger about. Honey and brown sugar are at the back, to point of providing a sweetened, caramelized flavor to the rest of the beer. Very thick and hearty, with excellent carbonation, to the point where the fruitiness is far more juicy and accentuated as a result. A little too sweet, syrupy, and boozy at the finish, but the feel is spot-on and pretty easy to drink.

A solid offering of FFF, although gets way too sweet even with the finer fruity and malty textures that it has to offer. I haven't had too many Scotch or Scottish ales from the Midwest (other that Founders' Dirty Bastard, and maybe one or two more), but it's definitely a region that makes them the right way, and I think because the hoppiness is pungent and earthy enough to round up the assertive malt bold properties. While I could do without the excessive sweetened, boozy finish, I could definitely have this again. Pairs very well with all kinds of food. Recommended for fans of FFF.
