On tap at The Rocking Horse in Logan Square. Appearance Pale golden with a fingers worth of off white head that dissipates quickly. Nose Slight grassy notes with floral teases. Hops present but not hugely noticeable. Taste quite mild with a touch of hop and dry finish. Delivers exactly what's advertised here very mild with a hop punch and surprisingly floral. More like fresh hop water following the lead of concur water with a hint of bitter elderflower. Medium bodied with a dry finish which makes new any more and more. Overall, a great session and first beer at dinner. I am not sure if all of the dipa and iipas I have had are taking a till on my palate but I truly am enjoying these session pales. Cheers.

A session type beer from Three Floyds!

Pours out a nice darker orange with 2 fingers of a fluffy, white head.

The aroma has some grassy, slightly floral, slightly citrus hop notes along with a touch of caramel and bready malt notes.

The taste is mostly hop driven with the grassy hop notes along with some floral notes a small touch of citrus and some caramel sweetness in the middle to balance it all out. There is a bit of bready malt note in the back end too.

The body is very light, almost thin and the mouthfeel is slightly creamy.

This is a very easy to drink, crisp, clean and refreshing beer. It's not overly complex, but you could put down quite a few of these during the summer. Nothing out of the ordinary, but does what it wants to do quite well.

Copper orange in color with a thick, creamy, off white head that leaves behind good lace and retention. Big floral and fruity hop bouquet. Similar in the taste but there's a nice sweetness reminiscent of raw wildflower honey. A bit of malt shows up in both aroma and flavor to give it a bit of balance. Still hop forward. And let's be honest. This isn't a mild. Its another hoppy APA that happens to have a low %ABV and IBU count. There's an interesting earthy and grassy quality to the finish. In summary, pretty sweet and sugary with lots of fruity hops. Almost too sweet and a bit cloying during certain sips. Otherwise easy drinking and delicious.

A - dark orangish amber wiht a big, soft, dense, white head that has great retention

S - big citrusy oranges with tons of orange zest

T - huge citrusy hop character, orange zest, sweet malt, faint birthday cake batter, mild bitterness in the finish

M - medium bodied, well carbonated, very smooth

This is a fantastic APA. It's very easy to drink. It's intricate, enjoyable, complex, hoppy, malty, smooth, refreshing, and definitely worth a try. This was incredible.

This brew was served from the tap at the Three Floyds Brewpub in Munster, Indiana. It arrived in a generic nonic glass, glowing a golden honey coloring. It held a two finger head of uniform white foam, showing great retention. The bubbles were sticky, clinging to the glass, helping the head remain, albeit sagging. Any loss was marked by thick sheety lacing, and was easily reproducible with a swirl. No haze or sediment was noted, and carbonation appeared to be light. The nose gave sweaty pales and lightly wheaty grain, light licorice bite, and big herbal hop bitterness and depth to meet. With warmth came chlorine chemical sourness, light adjuncts, and basic lactic acidity. Our first impression was that this was a nice pale ale, with even flavoring, and an easy sip. As we sipped, the flavoring opened with softer pale grain, light bready toast, mild caramels, saltiness, and juicy citric and earthy hop sugars, giving eventual bitterness towards the peak. The middle was otherwise occupied by floured macaroni, light metallics, and the sweetest nectary hop bite of the sip, but with evenly maintained citric hop rind bitterness. The finishing wash came with phenolic bite, faint licorice, corn flake malts, adjuncts, pales, synthetic lime, and mixing citric hop freshness. The body was light, and the carbonation was big and froth, but with soft prickle, much in line with the rest of their pale ales. There was hearty slurp, sip, cream, and froth, with coating coolness and light crispiness around the mouth. The light dryness is erased by eventual mucousy muck. The abv is easy, and the beer drinks nicely.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this beer was how sessionable it was. Through the aroma, flavoring, and feel, this guy sits very much in the same vein as Three Floyds’ other pale ales, but just a bit more toned down, seemingly for the purpose of easing and enhancing drinkability via lightness. The hops remained very fresh, but the grains cheapened up, giving more adjuncts and corn. The nose, too, is interesting sweaty and plastic, but doesn’t change the fact that this is an easy drinking, refreshing offering.

Poured from tap into pint at trolley stop Dayton. Clear golden pour with not much head but nice sticky lacing. Doesnt really look too good...
Great hop aromas..crisp and clean.
Taste is definitely mild but not in the English sense...mild American hop with some slight amber malt. Its way to hoppy for a traditional mild and too hoppy for an apa...its its luke a sessionable ipa.
Either way it a fantastic brew. Lots of flavor but deff mild so it doesn't overwhelm the palate. Nice brew.

Pours a clear, copper color. 1/3 inch head of an off-white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of strong hops, hint of floral, hint of grass, slight alcohol, slight sweet malt, hint of pale malt, sugar, and a hint of pine. Fits the style of an American Pale Ale. Mouth feel is smooth and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of citrus hops, hint of floral, pine, slight sweet malt, and a hint of alcohol. Overall, good appearance, aroma, feel, and blend.

Taste: lots of different hops, grassy, citrusy, and piney. some malts but mainly focuses on the hops. not bad but I was looking for something a little more complexity outside the hops

Mouthfeel: pretty light and very smooth. not too strong of a bitter aftertaste.

Overall: I wish the complexity came in a different manner. with this hop medley i would like stronger hop taste. glad i got to try it on tap and bought a six pack of something else.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams "Perfect Pint" glass.

Appearance: Pours a deep copper amber orange with a lot of fast rising bubbles. Huge five finger off white head with very good retention. Leaves a lot of creamy lacing around the glass.

Smell: A solid hop forward aroma that is fairly grassy with a solid malt presence. Hops upfront with a mix of herbal, grassy, and citrus hops with hints of orange peel, pineapple, grapefruit, and lemon. Also some pine resin in the hop mix. Solid balancing presence of bready malts with hints of caramel, biscuit, toffee, yeast, and cracker. A very vibrant and well balanced smell for a "mild" beer.

Taste: Like the aroma previews, a good balance of grassy and citrus hop flavor with bready caramel malts. Hoppy up front with a taste of grassy and herbal hops. Fruity taste of citrus orange, pineapple, lemon, and some grapefruit. Also some piney and floral hop taste. Solid presence of sweet bready malts with notes of caramel, toffee, biscuit, cracker, and yeast. Very well balanced taste that while is not huge, is a lot more than you expect from a mild. Very solid and tasty.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy, fairly wet, and very smooth.

Overall: A very good mild ale that is more like a pale ale. Solid hop mix with a good malt balance.

12oz btl poured into a Sam Adams pint glass.

A: Pretty appealing orangish, amber coloring. Head was adequate, just off-white, fluffy & fairly long lasting. Solid lacing.

S: Fruity citrus rind aroma jumps out first. Hops very much present, but not an overtly hoppy smelling beer. Yeasty bread.

T: Ying and yang of hop/malt seems fairly balanced. Cut/wet grass, lemon rind, a good dose of sweet maltiness. Dry & moderate bitterness on the finish. However, overall, I'm left wanting more. Malty aftertaste is neither offensive nor pleasant.

M: Smooth. Small amount of carbonation felt. Alcohol is perceived, but just.

O: Well, I guess they mostly nailed the idea of trying to come up with an "American Mild". A fairly easygoing ale with slightly lower levels of hop bitterness and slightly higher levels of malt than you'd see in a typical APA - though I'd say it still is rather too forceful to really be a session ale - hop heads sure to disagree. Unfortunately, it didn't really add up to anything too exciting for me. Great brewery, but this is my least favorite brew of theirs so far.

Thanks to Irishace9 for this one. Had once before on tap, this is my first bottle experience with this one. Poured from 12 oz. bottle into CCB pint glass.

A: This is an attractive, nice copper with some haze. Fluffy two-finger off-white head that lasts. Medium level of visible carbonation.

S: Hops (pine with a touch of citrus) and bready, chewy malt. Not a big aroma overall here - although the amount of aroma and the citrus rind aspect grows as the beer warms during the drink.

T: Follows aroma - with the addition of grassiness to the hop profile, and an almost wheat/grainy flavor on the exhale. Overall impression is a bit malt forward. Dry with a moderate bitterness on the finish.

M: Heavy-bodied for style, and chewy. Good carbonation sensation. No alcohol to speak of.

O: An enjoyable beer. I think it could be just a bit more hoppy (especially the citrus character), but this seems to be a personal preference. The wheat flavor seems a bit out of place, but I think it's growing on me. Tasty, but nothing that blows your socks off.

Appearance: Pours a nice brown color with a pretty big, bubbly head. Lookin' good.

Smell: Not too much like the taste. The aroma on this one, as the label says, has a hop nose. Super pleasant -- nice, fresh, quality hops on this one... mostly like fresh grass or pine.

Taste/feel: Doesn't taste so much like the smell, but still very awesome. The taste is malt-dominant, and this truly tastes like an APA (unlike Zombie Dust, which I feel is more like an IPA). It's hard for me to describe how this one tastes, but it's just like a gritty, malty, cereal flavor that keeps making me come back for another sip. The bitterness is there, but it's, like the style claims to be, mild. This may be called a mild ale, but it's really not as mild as one would think... a fantastic hop nose, with a delicious flavor. An underdog from Three Floyds.

Living in Chicago I am lucky to have access to Three Floyd's lineup on a first-come-first-serve basis. It's not that hard to find 3F beers in chicago...it's just that if you aren't buying it from the brewery then you usually have a limited selection. This is one of the ones that usually gets neglected when people snap up 3F at the stores. For example I heard someone at Binny's last week ask a worker if they have any 3F in stock. The worker replied: "Well, we have a few six packs of Pride & Joy" To which the costumer said: "Awwww dammit, that sucks." I've overlooked this beer, as I think many people have in our area.

The beer itself isn't spectacular. Right one the bottle it says "Mild Ale"...and yes it is mild for 3F standards. Nothing stands out. But I can see why they make it. Perfect for hipsters who want to drink 3F, but can't stand hops. With a lower ABV it is certainly sessionable, but at the $11.99 per sixer price (plus Chicago taxes) I don't see it being worth it for the price as a session beer. Now if it were $7.99 per sixer I'd be much more pleased.

My preference of Pale Ales (NOTE: I prefer the Hoppier-styled APAs)
Zombie Dust>Alpha King> ---(Then a gap)---Daisy Cutter>Sierra Nevada>Pride&Joy

All in all, I'd pass on it. Nothing special. Which I love changing up the ABV and IBUs in what I drink, but even still I just personally don't like this and wouldn't seek it out again. There are many other Pale Ales I would grab before this one.

Perhaps the most balanced hoppy beer that Three Floyds produces, Pride & Joy is both full of hop flavors, yet lets the grains demonstrate a presence as well. The major flavors are citrus, tropical fruit pulp, and grain/biscuits, which combine into a very drinkable pale ale. There is enough modest bitterness and hints of vegetal hops to give a slight nod to the English tradition as well. While I'd probably most enjoy this during slightly warmer months, the tropical and citrus fruit flavors are refreshing in their reminder of the spring and summer to come.

Pour a tall, 3cm head of fairly clean white foam, made up of medium and large-sized bubbles, with above average retention, fading in about two minutes or so to a thick ring around the glass and a thin film of foam atop the body. Lacing is somewhat substantial, sticking across the entire glass in large dollops and swaths. The body is a copper orange color, with light bringing out bright orange hues. Transparent, with fairly vigorous and visible carbonation.

Aroma of dried orange peel, very modest grapefruit, toasted bread and baked biscuit-like malts, tobacco leaf, and some withering-bitter vegetal-like hops. There's quite a bit going on here, and the result is perhaps one of the more balanced beers from Three Floyds, which is really enjoyable.

Overall flavor a bit like "Constant Comment" tea, but with citrus/tropical hops and grain/biscuit-influenced malt backbone. Front of palate is sweet, as from pale malts, with modest grain and biscuit notes, as well as contributed by a medley of tropical fruit juices. Mid-palate picks up orange peel, cloves, hop bitterness, mild tropical fruit (passion fruit, minor mango and pineapple) and citrus (orange) with a backdrop of mild grain-like flavors and some malt sweetness. Back of palate finds a more assertive hop bitterness, but still some tropical hop (passion fruit) and sweet orange/grapefruit, with pale malt sweetness and biscuit-like flavor. Aftertaste of is moderate bitterness with lingering biscuit and grain flavors.

Beer is medium to medium-light in body, with medium-low levels of carbonation, gently creating a slightly foamy, very smooth mouthfeel. Closes quite dry, with modest residual stickiness lingering across the palate.

A: Clear, golden amber color, typical pale ale color, great head though, off white, sticky, dense and frothy, .5 finger when settled

S: Amazing pungent hops, fruit and pine mixed, bits of tropical fruit

T: Actually a little mild for an APA especially from FFF, has great flavor though, just not that bitter punch I was anticipating, pine dominates flavor but doesn't taste dank or resiny, pleasant malt provides sweetness throughout, super easy to drink, but missing a touch of depth

M: Good body, easy and refreshing, carb sting up front but maybe a little flat in the finish

O: A super easy drinking APA, I love the pine and fruit combination

From the bottle:
This pours a pale golden in the glass. There’s a mild hoppy aroma to it with a nice toasted biscuit note on the nose. There’s more of that tasty hop bite on the flavor with a toasted biscuit on the finish like a treat. I found that this had a citrusy tropical fruit hop aroma and flavor emerge as it opened. Guava? Pineapple? Under the citrus it’s lemony more than orange, with a wonderful crispness to it. It has just the right amount of bitterness to round it out. Sessionable and so flavorful. What a winner!

From the growler:
This pours a clear caramel-amber in color with thin foam. There’s a nice and mild yet hoppy aroma. Makes sense since it’s a hoppy ESB. The flavor has a pleasing bitterness with a mellow
honeyed biscuit finish and a warmly rounded flavor. Caps off with a sharp pine bitter note on the end. Definitely one I’d enjoy again as an almost-sessionable (in the 5% ABV range) ale.

You can smell dark fruits, Tastes very bready, some cinnonom, some apple, some cherry but not in a sweet way, just subtle. a hint of bitterness from the hops, earthy. amazing balance between the malt and hops. This is a very easy drinking beer, not one of their poster child's but worth a try.

12oz bottle from zrab11 (thanks man!). If the numbers printed on the bottle are a bottling date, I'm sure not man enough to decipher them. Served in a Red Brick snifter.

Pours murky orange with a quarter finger pale head. A fair amount of lacing.

Smells of piney and floral hops with a touch of malty sweetness.

Taste follows the nose. A rush of subtle but flavorful hops followed by a sweet cracker maltyness. A nice balance that is nice and flavorful without ever getting out of control.

Light feel with moderate carbonation. Long flavorful hoppy aftertaste.

I have to admit that as a die hard imperial fan I was skeptical about a "mild ale". This was no joke though. They pack a good bit of hop character in such a small package. I don't "session" but if I did, I would want a whole lot more of this.

Appearance: A golden orange color for this Mild Ale/APA. Excellent lacing on glass was a very nice surprise. Head started at about a finger but died down but never disappeared.

Smell: AHHH, wonderful light tropical fruits greet the drinker. The hops are the driving force, accompanied by a caramel presence that cannot be ignored. Refreshing, reminds me of a warm summer day.

Taste: After enjoying the pleasant aromas, it was not a let down with the taste. Crisp hops at the front of the beer yield way to the tropical fruit, soon to be replaced by another surge of hops. At 30IBU's this beer really brings some high quality flavor.

Mouthfeel: Sharp taste, hops and light fruits manage to linger around for a long time on the palette.

Overall: In my opinion, Three Floyds Brewery is that their best with their APA's. Alpha King, Zombie Dust, and Pride & Joy are all elite examples of the style. I've been lucky enough to have all three and look forward to getting my hands on much more of these masterpieces. Pride & Joy doesn't quite have the pull the other two but this is still a wonderful brew. I would recommend this to anyone looking to get into craft beer as a nice jumping off point.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass; no bottle dating, but was purchased recently. Pours a very hazy golden amber color with a nice 2 finger fluffy white head with excellent retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice spotty foamy lacing clings to the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation as well. Aromas of big orange zest, grapefruit, pineapple, bread, floral, light pine, grass, and light citrus rind. Damn nice aromas with nice hop complexity and balance. Taste of orange zest, pine, grapefruit, caramel, bread, floral, grass, and light citrus rind. Good amount of grassy citrus bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus zest, pine, caramel, bread, grass, floral, and citrus rind on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic hop flavor complexity and balance; with a solid malt backbone; and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a lightly creamy, sticky, and crisp mouthfeel that is very nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent pale ale! Great hop flavor balance and complexity; and extremely smooth to drink as expected. A highly enjoyable offering.

Pours out a semi-hazed light amber color with three fingers of frothy foam and decent retention and lacing properties. Light, crisp, and refreshing texture / body with a sparkling carbonation.

Surprisingly robust floral, lemon peel, and spice hopping on a palpable cracker malt. The flavor contains all of these elements and also a spoonful of pine resin on the side. Almost the dictionary definition of a good sessionable APA.

Poured into FFF Teku glass

Appearance: Copper, orange color with a solid two fingers off white head that settled slowly to a ring of tight bubbles along the edge of the glass. It is semi-clear in that light can penetrate but it's still slightly hazy, too.

Smell: Slight hop presence but seems dominated by malt and grains. I do pick out some citrus notes although subdue for sure. Orange and bready combined.

Taste: Bready with a slight caramel sweetness followed by a mild hop tingle.

Mouthfeel: Definitely a light feeling beer that seems almost watery. A very refreshing beer.

Overall: This is one of my favorite summer beers because its so damn refreshing and easy to drink. This just goes down so very easy and is a beer that I dare say, is session able.

A - Clear copper color with a large, full, creamy, smooth, white head. Very nice retention leaving a great ring of lace.

S - Floral and citrusy hops. Nice nose with a nice bready malt backbone. Solid and smells refreshing.

T - Similar to the nose. Plenty of biscuity malt accented with a nice grapefruit and orange citrus hop flavor. Undertones of floral hops. A bit of a zesty, bitter finish.

M - Solid, but light, body. Lots of carbonation. Fairly wet feel with a strong bitter finish that doesn't linger too long.

D - Very refreshing and solid beer. Not too complicated but hits the spot for the style.

Notes: Best option at a bar I ended up with so I gave it a shot. Wasn't exactly sure what the style would be (drinks like an English Pale Ale more or less). Refreshing and solid with a great biscuity malt backbone. Nice choice for a pale.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass- pours a hazy amber/orange color with about a finger of head, GREAT retention, some nice rings of lacing. Beautiful looking ale.

Smell is interesting- pretty lemon-y. A little pale malt, not a particularly strong scent. Pleasant, but could be fuller.

Taste is also interesting- like a British bitter but more citrus-y. Lemon and pale malt mix at first, follower by some caramel, which then gives way to the lemon and slight bitterness.

Mouthfeel is excellent- medium light body, moderate soft carbonation. This ones a keeper folks. As they say, great session beer. Too bad I can't get it regularly.
