newish russian imperial over at renegade. pours oil black into a 10oz. snifter with a very small tan head with almost no retention. no light passes through, and it looks thick. smells like a combination of black coffee and bitter dark malts. no booze at all in the nose. flavor is well balanced but pretty mellow compared to a lot of other russian imperials. nothing stands out from the coffee to the booze as majorly invasive, and in fact this tastes like a normal english stout to me. its smooth and creamy on the mouthfeel, fuller bodied but not heavy at all. moderate carbonation and a bitter chocolatey finish. overall a very relaxed russian imperial, different from any other i have tasted. will order this again.

Got in a trade with the The-Adjunct-Hippie. 12 ounce can into snifter, no can dating. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger dense khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice soapy lacing clings on the glass. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, fudge, caramel, toasted dark bread, herbal, wood, and pine; with lighter notes of raisin, fig, date, licorice, molasses, smoke, char, and roast/smokey earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and moderate earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of huge dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, fudge, caramel, toasted dark bread, smoke, char, herbal, wood, and pine; with lighter notes of raisin, fig, date, licorice, molasses, roast/smokey earthiness. Moderate roast/char and woody/piney hop bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, fudge, caramel, toasted dark bread, smoke, char, herbal, wood, pine, light dark fruit, and roast/smokey earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great roast/hop bitter/sweet balance, and zero acrid/astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from roast/hop bitterness, increasing through the glass. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready, and sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 9%. Overall this is a great Russian imperial stout. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to sip on for the ABV. Really spot on style example. A very enjoyable offering.

Poured from can to pint. Black and opaque, but a few fingers of mocha thick head that's up and down. Minimal spotty lacing. Aroma is roast malt, coffee, and anise. Some booze, but doesn't become too present until it warms. Flavor is roast coffee and dark fruits, fig, plum.

Picked up a single from TW Arrowhead for $3.99. Received at TW 1/26/16. No canning date.

Beer poured black as night with a nice tan head that is leaving some lacing behind.

Nose is mocha and light chocolate with some coffee.

Taste is very well balanced. Mocha, light chocolate, and coffee meld nicely with the large malt base and ample hopping to balance things out.

Feel is medium bodied and pretty smooth.

Overall a very nice relatively lighter impy stout that is easy to drink. Something I would try again!

Bought a single 12-ounce can at Spirit World in Omaha about a month ago and finally opened it last night on 7/21/16.

Bottle chilled down to 35 degrees in my bar refrig and poured in to a 12-ounce snifter glass. Beautiful pour of a very dark brown in color with about a 1-finger creamy/foamy egg-shell white head. A decent amount of lacing was seen when sipped that was ring-like. Aroma is of burnt roasted malts with a hint of licorice even. Taste follows close to the nose with a hint of cocoa and even caramel. Doesn't taste like the 9% ABV that is listed on the side of the can at all but more like a 5-6%er. Very smooth and doesn't taste 'boozy'. Medium-bodied with perfect carbonation. Overall a very tasty brew with perfect rating.

Appearance : Cola brown pour with a development of dark chocolate to black. Head is not large and dwindles to a ring in short time.

Aroma : Black licorice and burnt malts are apparent right away, with hints of molasses and blackened grease. Dark chocolate and potted dirt finishes out this nose.

Taste : metallic to start, but that falls off quickly leading to rich dark chocolate, roast malts, and some bright morning coffee. Flavor leaves off a hot, steamy mild coffee flavor with lingering bitterness of licorice, malts, and dark chocolate. The flavor doesn't mesh well with the smell, so one would benefit from not taking deep whiffs while imbibing.

Feel : Sticky and hangs in the medium to large bodied territory, with carbonation welling up halfway through and ending musky and dry with bites of acid from coffee I assume.

Overall : A solid RIS, just not as memorable as the greats in the business. Regardless, I'll take great joy in finishing this and plan on buying more.

Picked up from the 'discount bin' so-to-speak... Pretty sure this has been store-aged, as I have had this previously and was somewhat unimpressed because it was simply too boozy tasting for a 9% beer.

These cans I have taste incredible now though!
Must have at least a year under their belt.

The booze has lightened immensely and brought forth a considerable balance of roast and dark fruits to the forefront. Nice bitterness and slight smoke to it. It's reminiscent of Old Rasputin now, in the best way possible.

I had a feeling these would get better with time, but now I will certainly be securing more of these and throwing them in the basement.

Appearance: Arrives pitch black, with a sturdy head of three fingers depth; excellent retention and a spotty wall of lace

Smell: Really roasty, with chocolate and char; just a hint of caramel and date

Taste: Rich chocolate fudge, hints of caramel and date, and a wallop or roasty char; mellows out a bit, through the middle, with some coffee tones and earthy hops elements, but the char comes back in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: Never quite had an RIS with this much char and, at first, I was a bit put off; I came around, however; this beer verges on a smoked beer but never crosses the line
