Enjoyed at the brewery on 10/9

Copper color; great frothy head; slightly sweet on the nose; consistent lacing down the glass; well-balanced up front; malt-forward; good, soft and subtle pumpkin flavor; sessionable fall beer; a little 'bitey' on the back end.

Served in a nonic pint glass at the Schaumburg Whole Foods.

Do pumpkins or a particular blend of spices kill a unicorn? Just wondering... Anyway, this stuff pours a clear sunset amber topped by a finger of glowing off-white foam. The nose comprises toffee, toasted biscuit, brown sugar, and clove. The taste brings in more of the same, with a darker toasting to the biscuit and a strong spicy bitterness pervading (though it definitely reeks of clove-y and peppery bitterness, I will admit that this could be a by-product of pumpkin shell or something). Unfortunately, this bitterness not only runs counter to the smell's promise, but it also violently clashes with the sweetness of the malts and some of the spices. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a decidedly dry finish. Overall, this is by no means my favorite pumpkin ale, but it's also not quite the worst out there. I will say, though, that its inherent bitterness places it nearer the bottom of the pile than the top.

Pours a clear orange with a thin collar of head, poor retention. Nose has familiar pumpkin spices , cinnamon being the most prominent. Sweet notes come through with a bit of pumpkin flesh and brown sugar. Taste is very mild up front with a slight grain presence. A bit of toasted malts and cinnamon come next, but nothing like the aroma. The taste is bland for what the aroma suggested. Mouthfeel is light with high carbonation. Overall, this one is pretty uninspiring (except for the cool name). Would not try again.
