Poured into a pint glass from a growler drawn two days earlier at the greenbush brewery.
Appearance- pours a thick looking, oily dark brown with a huge bubbly, dark tan head. The head dissipated very slowly leaving lacing all over the place. Inpresstive soft head- almost like a nitro-tap.
Smell- A faint roasty coffee note, followed by a resinous marijuana funk, then dominated by a huge hop bomb. What an American black IPA should smell like.
Taste- roasty coffee malts and dark chocolate that fades into bitter plum, then an all out bitter hop finish. Aftertaste is like hoppy cold espresso.
Mouthfeel- Smooth and creamy with a bitter mouth pucker.
Overall. Nothing remarkable, but a dynamite representation of a Black IPA. Very well done. Beauty in simplicity.
Cheers.

12oz bottle, pours black with slight mahogany hues when held to a light, huge foamy tan head, excellent retention, some lacing. Fresh, dank, citric and floral hops - mainly grapefruit, with some dark malts on the nose. Tastes include an excellent meld of roasted malts, chocolate, biscuity grain, caramel, grapefruit rind, and pine. Very creamy mouth-feel, bitterness lingers with roastiness in there as well. Overall, I really enjoyed this offering from Greenbush. I look forward to trying more of their beers.

Black IPA. Served on-draught into a pilsner glass at Jake Melnick's in Chicago over St. Patrick's Day weekend. Reviewed from notes. Expectations were high; I really enjoyed Greenbush's porter right before this.
A: Pours a one finger rich tan colour head of good cream and thickness, and good (3-4+ minute) retention. Body colour is a solid opaque dark black. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show.
Sm: Floral hops, dark malts, and slightly buried roast. A mild strength aroma.
T: Creamy. Dark malts. Generic floral hop character. Buried yet intrusive roast. Balance is decent, but it's still an unrefined black IPA, never quite getting the mix of roast/dark malts and hoppy character to feel natural. They don't play well together here. Lacks complexity and subtlety, but it's built decently for what it is. No yeast character or alcohol comes through.
Mf: Smooth, creamy, and wet. Nice thickness. Slight overcarbonation.
Dr: Drinkable. Hides its ABV pretty well. Enjoyable, but far from the best in the style that I've had. I might have it again, but I'm in no hurry. Wouldn't recommend it to friends. Unrefreshing.

12oz bottle poured into a Greenbush snifter.
The beer pours a very dark cola brown cola, nearly black color, quite opaque with 2 fingers of khaki colored head that has decent retention and leaves a touch of lace behind. The aroma is of pine, bitter hops, lots of resinous character with some roasted coffee, mild citrus and floral character and some sweet malt character. Piney hops hit the tongue first, some fruity and citrusy notes behind it, light coffee roast, rich dark grain and some light bitter dark chocolate all find their way in. The body is nice, moderate carbonation with just a touch of prickly zip, that finishes very dry.
Verdict: A nice take on the black IPA, the flavors are balanced nicely, but don't really dazzle. It's a safe bet for anyone who likes hops or wants to find a happy medium between an IPA and a Stout/Porter.

I bought this single 12oz brown bottle at the Binny's store in Bloomingdale,IL as part of a build-your-own six pack for $9.99, making this $1.67 a bottle. No freshness date.
The beer poured a dfark brown color with 3 finger's worth of tan head. Retention was good as was the lacing.
Wow! - Huge piny hop aroma.
Pine and grapefruit hops dominate the flavor and provide 85 IBU's worth of bitterness. Under the hops there is a mild chocolaty malt flavor but it plays a secondary role to the hops..
Medium body with medium carbonation. I really enjoyed the creamy texture to this beer.
Not my favorite black ale - New Glarus's Black Top takes top prize for that, but those who like it on the hoopy side may enjoy this one.
