750ml bottle, the latest in Wild Rose's barrel-aged series - a Flanders Red Ale, which spent an unspecified amount of quality time in red wine barrels. So named via a pun on the access road off of Crowchild Trail in Calgary that leads one to the brewery, I presume.

This beer pours a clear, medium orange-brick amber colour, with three fingers of puffy, finely foamy, and yet somewhat fizzy off-white head, which leaves a few instances of rearing sea-monster lace around the glass as it gently recedes.

It smells of semi-sour raspberry and cherry fruit, bready caramel malt, a bit of earthy yeast, some weak red wine barrel notes - musty dark vinous wood and vanilla, mostly - a softly acidic lactic character, and some very tame weedy, herbal hops. The taste is bready, doughy caramel malt, tart black berry fruit, a headier oaked red wine acerbity, robust and weirdly friendly yeast, a further milky sourness, some middling sharp lemon citrus, and a weak, indistinct earthy bitterness.

The carbonation is pleasantly engaging in its arms-length frothiness, the body on the low side of a typical middleweight, and plainly smooth, with the emphasis on the banal meaning of the former. It finishes off-dry, the kind of languishing malt thankful that the various sour players - wood, yeast, and fruit alike - seem to be packing 'er in as well.

I gotta say, this comes off as a decently rendered Flanders Red Ale - the red wine barrel treatment hard to parse amongst the enjoyable mixed fruity sourness, but I suppose that's what one might call 'blended', and I mean that with absolutely no cynicism. Easy to drink, and a sign of more good things to come from this program at Wild Rose.

Appearance - Pours a medium rust with two fingers of foamy off white head.

Smell - tart aromas of dark fruits (cherries and plum), vinous aromas from the wine barrel, sweetness from red currants, bready malts, and earthy yeast.

Taste - Tart flavours of red currants, cherries and plum, along with the vinous flavours from the red wine barrels. The malts help mellow out the tartness in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Leaves a lingering tart feeling and dryness.

Overall - A nice rendition of the style. The wine barrel definitely hits the mark along with the tartness from the fruit.

I am deeply, deeply partial to the Flanders Red Ale style, and so it's hard for me to be objective about this stuff, which has the benefit of being both a) a Flanders Red Ale, and b) from one of my reliable local breweries.

Pours a dense, hazy, sludgy brown-red colour, topped with a small amount of head that quickly recedes. Smell is tart, cherries, berries, slight woodiness, slightly milky sourness, strawberries, faint grape-y vinousness.

Taste is much the same. Sour cherries, Sour Patch kids. Tart but with a balancing sweetness. Cherries, cherry pie. Berries, slight grape/wine character. Nice body, nice carbonation.

As the reviewer below put it (and I suspect I actually bought it from the reviewer below), this *isn't* on par with the Rodenbachs of the world. But it's still very, very good. I'd have a fridge full if it weren't so pricey (especially compared to the downright affordable Rodenbach Grand Cru).

750ml bottle poured into tulip 22/11/15

A hazed reddish amber with just a finger of light tan foam that leaves no lace

S dried cranberries hit me first, tart raspberries, lemon juice very faint vinegar, mildly musty, has a bit of that dank basement thing going on but it works, I'm getting some barrel notes and a hint of brown sugar and sherry

T much like the nose, a little more wood, not as musty, heaps of fruit, the sweet and sour mix works, just a little spice I can't quite place

M has some weight for 5%, gets a little airy, mild sour bite, oily on the palate, a fruity brown sugar finish

O has a fair bit going on in something I could session if I was feeling wealthy cause at 15$ shes not cheap but a solid attempt for sure

I'm not saying this is up there with the Rodenbachs of of the world but a very respectable beer and kudos to Wild Rose for taking on some obscure complex styles, and doing it well at that
