First day on tap at the brewery, winter 2012. This is a seasonal red ale brewed with fresh spruce.

Pours a slightly hazy medium copper. Off-white head is moderate, but has some staying power. Complex aroma features undertones of sweet caramel malt. Low spicy hop aroma, but the spruce is the star. Piney, earthy, and adding its own spice notes. Very inviting. Flavor is similar to the aroma. Medium bitterness offsets the sweet malt. Some caramel and bready malt flavors. The spruce is up front, but not overpowering. Lingers into the finish with a slight astringency. The spruce is complex with some clove-like spiciness, pine and wood. Slight vanilla in the finish, especially as the beer warms. Medium body, medium carbonation. Very low warming from alcohol. Slightly astringent finish, but not unpleasant. Overall, an extremely enjoyable holiday ale. More balance than last years, which had much more prominent spruce.

Cheers!

On tap at Engine 15. Some spruce aroma, and spruce in taste. Spicy. Amber coloured body. Not a bad beer, though I would like them to go nuts on the spruce. nothing like an American strong as listed. As an amber, it works and is interesting.Decent drinkability.

Thin head with not much lacing. Body is clear, essentially all amber in color.

S: caramel malt with a slight evergreen/ spruce aroma.

T: caramel malt with a spruce and evergreen presence and floral notes.

M: medium body and moderate carbonation.

Overall a very unique beer. The spruce is a little odd but I actually like it. This is a true seasonal beer for sure.
