Presentation: 341mL bottle with no bottle on date. Serve in a short pint glass and drank alongside brasserie Dunham's "Black IPA"

Appearance: unlike some other Black ipa's it has a transparent brownish-blackness, rather than being absolutely pitch black. Appearance is slightly darker than “More brown than black IPA” from Stone brewing. Very light lacing and a head that was quick to dissipate but maintained and nice residual foam on top until it was finished

Nose: Dark chocolate, floral, very light orange rind, also some
chocolatey orange nose becomes which becomes much more prominent with a bit of agitation. Cocoa butter smell; fresh chocolate malt nose

Flavour: Not much in the way of flavour or mouthfeel, very thin; certainly more citrusy than Brasserie Dunhams Black IPA. Light body – refreshing and not overwhelming

Overall: this beer is much less complex and interesting as the other (Dunham Black IPA) color is much paler, less bitter and less assertive than the other. Nonetheless, it is a tasty beer and I wouldnt mind drinking it; despite much better versions of this style

This beer pours straight black, absolutely zero light gets through with 3 fingers of extremely foamy tan head. Head retention itself is pretty good and a decent amount of carbonation is visible streaming up the side of the glass. A very respectable looking Black IPA.

Aroma - The nose has rich roasted coffee and dark chcoloate contrased fairly well by some floral hops along with some earthy tones, nothing too dank though. and there is a hint of orange rind in the back end.

Taste - The flavor here is where it fails me. it starts off with a really bitter coffee and is followed by a peppery spice then big dose of grassy/floral hops and some extremely light roasted nuts.

Feel - Definitely on the lighter end of medium bodied and carbonation is a mix of sprizy and creamy all at once.

Overall - I'm giving this a 3.25 overall because of the appearance and nose. The flavor let me down and while Not horrible it really wasn't great. I found there were flavors of chocolate I got from the aroma missing the hop spicyness should be reworked too. It does have potential but it needs work.

Pitch black with a big off-white head.

In the nose there's roasted notes with fresh hops aroma, not bad.

In the mouth it's way too sweet. Lots of chocolate flavors but not a good chocolate. The bitterness is too subtle for it to be a good black IPA.

Nice mouth feel though

Definitely a miss for me.

Bottled Nov 2011.

Beer is a very dark brown with hints of red. Not quite black. A vigorous pour results in a small beige head.

Restrained grassy and citrusy hops, somewhat floral, with a slightly roasted malt background. Some caramel is there.

Woah. Lots of anise in the taste. I was not expecting that. Some grapefruit and other citrus fruits, caramel, slightly roasty, a bit of coffee. OK. Not great.

Highly carbonated, medium body.

Overall, not a great Black IPA. Gets better as it goes but it is not a great example of the style.

I just got this bottle. 341ml, black ipa..

into a pint, the color is dark brown/red reflexion passing throught.

small lace around the glass on top, not much foam. uninvisible bubbles.

smell: hop, citrus kind of sniff, some caramal,

this is a roasted malted hoppy beer, it taste like a stout and a ipa together. its flavorfull.

mouthfeel is similar to a original ipa, kind of oily texture..tiny effervescence.

overall, its a bitter beer with roasted aroma, it would please any amateur of strong beer, even if its only 6%, quite good!

Bottle: Poured a black color ale with a medium size foamy head with OK retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of dry hops with light green hops notes. Taste is mix between some medium roasted malt notes with light dry taste and some green slightly bitter hops. Body is below average with OK carbonation. This one is lacking focus and needs to be somewhat more robust.

Oours a dark black. Thick Head.

Smells of hops and dark malts with some almost smokiness.

Taste is dark malt, burnt and robust but not heavy.

The Hops are a bit odd I must admit. I find the flavor profile of the hops a bit at odds with the burnt crisp character. however, enjoyable and a nice beer for sure.

Dark brown, pretty much black. Very small, light beige head.

Floral hops, almost soapy. Hints of chocolate, coffee.

Grapefruit right away, then some minimal dark ale tastes, some moka. Bitter end.

Medium, bordering on light body. Slight creamy feel.

Overall pretty good. I like the idea and the drinkability is pretty impressive. The grapefruit is really pronounced in this beer, almost felt like drinking a glass of grapefruit juice – oddly not a bad thing. Was not sweet at all, which was a bit of a surprise. I was hoping for a little more dark ale/porter/stout taste in there, but what do I know.

Finally, some black IPA from Quebec Brewery. We are not IPA specialist... however I was eager to try some black IPA from our beloved breweries. In bottle, this brewery is the first one to put one on the market... in Quebec City at least.

The beer color is black, not very dark however. More like a dark brown beer. Clear too. The head is brown color and sticks well to the glass. The look is above average, but lacks in darkness. As expected due to lack of darkness, I don't get much roasted malts in the nose. Woody and resinous (piney). Low intensity, not enough kicks.

Taste is good. More aggressive too, but not enough for an IPA. Piney mainly. The bitterness is low. Again, not roasted malts in the taste. A little bit thin and watery in the mouth.

Overall, it is good. However it lacks in some aspect. Could be very good with some adjustment.

Bottle from Broue HAHA. Bottled 11/11. From notes.

A - Poured a very deep brown. Lot's of carbonation coming up. Half finger of light brown head faded fast to a film. No lace, no retention.

S - Coffee, light citrus, burnt coffee, stale hops.

T - Dark malts, rough stale coffee and off hop combo. Some low quality chocolate seems to be at play as well making this one weak attempt at the style.

M - Nice carbonation, medium body, acceptable bitterness.

O/D - Not a weel constructed black IPA IMO. Flavours didn't work well at all for some reason. My guess would be a combo of too much aggression with the malt profile and not choosing the proper hops to match. In any case, it simply didn't taste all that good and I barely finished half.

12oz Bottle

Appearance - Dark black/brown colour with an average size fizzy and frothy beige coloured head. There isn't much carbonation showing and there is a good amount of lacing. The head lasted for longer than average.

Smell - Hops, roasted nuts, malts, grapefruits, chocolate

Taste & Mouth - The beer has an average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts and some piney hops. There is also a fair amount of a roasted/toasted flavour and coffee/chocolate. It ends with a roasted malt aftertaste with a touch of lingering hop bitterness.

Overall - This brewer is definitely on the right track with this one. I really enjoy this style of beer and it's nice to see a decent option available to me locally. It's probably the best beer I've had from this brewer.
