341ml bottle, part of a mixed pack currently available in Alberta. Brewed with mocha coffee and cocoa beans, in homage to the beer-loving porters of the London docks back in the day.

This beer pours a solid black abyss, with ever so slight basal cola highlights, and three fingers of billowy, puffy light brown head, which leaves some sudsy chain lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.

It smells quite prominently of bitter, earthy coffee - sort of espresso-like - dry, flaky chocolate, roasted malt, and some watered down Kahlua warming notes. The taste is more forward with the bittersweet cocoa powder, the milky cold coffee character staying fairly solid, some toasted caramel malt still barely playing second fiddle, with a dash of spirituous heat, and some flat earthy, leafy hops.

The carbonation is pretty sedate, just a dull hum if you really look for it, the body a mostly sturdy medium weight, with a straight-up smoothness - a bit of milkiness aiding the cause. It finishes on the sweet side, the chocolate overload continuing its run, the zingy cuppa-Joe essences holding fast, and everything else just kind of completing their own private fade-out.

An agreeably tasty stout, beefed-up as it is with the dug-up relics of the original recipe. The coffee and cocoa flavours are strong, yes, but spread well enough around to even be appealing to those of us who avoid coffee shops like the plague, but still share the general public's affinity for all things chocolate.

Props to joemcgrath27 for including this in our latest trade.

A - Pours pitch black, finger of head with some retention and no real lacing.

S - Rich milk chocolate, hints of fresh roasted coffee, marshmallows and graham crackers.

T - Much like the nose, loads of milk chocolate, the marshmallows come through alongside hints of espresso and a lingering burnt sugar and cocoa sweetness. Unique s'mores like aftertaste lingers on the palette.

M - Medium bodied, smooth and wet.

O - A very tasty coffee stout, definitely more on the sweeter side, which some might find offensive, but not me! Would love to have this stuff readily available, but that's a pipe dream.

12oz bottle from J.A. Moisan Epicier (Quebec City). 2.79. Best by 03/13. Served in a Southern Tier snifter.

Pours black with one and a half fingers mocha head that leaves small clumps of lace.

Smells of roasty creamed coffee and chocolate syrup.

Taste follows the nose. Very sweet chocolate syrup, creamed coffee, roast malts, vague dark fruit and an ever so slight hop-like pine bitterness on the back end. Flavor never deviates far from that initial syrup and sweetened coffee.

Medium full feel that approaches creamy with decent carbonation.

This stout is what it says it is but Sourhern Tier need not fear being replaced/usurped. The flavors seem just a little too artificial. I finished that bottle and feel there's no need to ever revisit this one. Ticked.

Thanks for another great Quebec beer, Papat444. I can't believe I haven't been to Quebec yet! Must go soon.

Appearance. Pours black with half a finger of brown head.

Smell. Coffee liquer and a bit of hershy's chocolate syrup. along with a little malty roastyness.

Taste. Lots of bitter dark coffee, some quality dark chocolate, just a bit of fruityness, cardboard, and smokey dark malts. Just tons of flavour.

Mouthfeel. Medium+ body, medium+ carbonation. A bit sticky.

Overall. Tastes like a bunch of coffee went in to this one. Good stuff.

Got this at Intermarche St-Roch in Quebec City. Really good grocery store for craft beer in the city. Go there if you're looking for something.

From a bottle into a snifter

APPEARANCE: A black pour yields a small, medium looking, tan or light mocha colored head with decent retention. Head quickly fades to a faint wisp and ring. Black body with zero carbonation evident. A splotchy wisp and ring remain leaving dots of lacing down the glass.

SMELL: Roasted malts, nice mocha coffee aromas, and some good dark chocolate. Some vanilla caramel notes show up along side the mocha coffee. Bold enough, and interesting.

TASTE: Not nearly as good as the nose. Watery flavor. Some roasted malts, then some watery coffee flavors come afterwards. A mild and persistent aftertaste with watery coffee, some cream, a touch of chocolate, then some weak bitterness limps in as well. Watery and not enjoyable at all. Did I mention this is watery and lousy?

PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Creamy enough, goes down fine and finishes dry on the palate. Feel is okay, but the flavor is just garbage. Slightyly atringent in the end.

OVERALL: Lousy. Watery, stale coffee with an overly astringent finish. Beer doesn't have to be like this. It can be good. This is not a good example of a coffee stout, so pass on this and try something else.

341ml bottle poured into tulip 29/3/12

A dark brown with cola at the edges, massive half glass of soapy mocha foam that lasts well down the glass leaving partial rings of lace deep down the glass

S chocolate milk and milk chocolate, mild char and smoke, chocolate covered cherries and raisins, smells pretty nice

T lots of coco powder I didn't smell and a little booze, everything else is still there just toned down a little

M enters fairly silky with the bubbles quickly fluffing it up leaving a creamy feel, big aftertaste of charred wood lasts for a while

O I almost loved the smell and I liked the taste, pretty decent stuff

I'm a little surprised this one didn't get a little more local love, pretty decent stuff at the end of the day, I suppose the price would determine if I drank this often or not. Thanks hoser for the opportunity

Bottle from Broue HAHA. From notes.

A - Poured black with brown one finger head. Carbonation coming up the sides leaves no lace and a film of retention.

S - Huge coffee notes with roasted malts too.

T - Less coffee, some cola, roasty, grainy, and some herbal hops.

M - Good carbonation, light to medium body and some bitterness.

O/D - Good aroma but not a highly drinkable stout. Average but acceptable.

A pretty thick looking beer as it pours. Very nice looking in the end; opaque black with a medium brown puffy head and some decent lacing.

Smell reminded me of Peche Mortel at first, but maybe I just haven't had a coffee stout for a while. Regardless, plenty of roasty coffee, milk chocolate, slight woody character. Very nice.

It starts out relatively bitter, almost a hint of astringency (possibly from the coffee?), but then sweetens quickly into a smooth, sweet, chocolatey finish. Slightest sour note, but it doesn't detract much.

Very thick and rich feeling beer; could pass for one that's 1-2% stronger.

Maybe I'm just deprived off coffee stouts right now, but I really enjoyed this one (and liked their new IPA too). I'm gonna be paying attention to this brewery.

Pours a black body with a thin cover of mocha-coloured head, leaving some lacing.

On the nose: roast malt, light molases, wheat, alcohol, boiled vegetable water, wet cardboard and cigarette ash tray. I think what was supposed to be coffee is made up of the cardboard and ashes. Not too pleasing to the nose.

The bottle states this is brewed with cocoa beans and the chocolate element is fairly distinct; lots of dark, earthy chocolate comes out right away in the mouth. Right alongside is decent filter coffee, creating a pretty accurate mocha flavour. Roasted malt is a little weak but adequate. Hints of vanilla, lactic sweetness and alcohol.

Medium body with moderate carbonation is alright.

The cocoa bean character is pretty interesting, not typical as part of a coffee stout. Other than that I might say this beer is one to pass on but would be worth checking out just out of interest. I feel like I enjoyed this at 3.5 but will give it a 4 to up the score a bit, it wasn't so bad.

Bottle: Poured a black color stout with a nice light brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of floral coffee notes is nice and well balanced by lactose and roasted malt notes. Taste is a nice enough mix between some floral coffee notes without too much astringency and lactose notes. Body is about average with good carbonation. Not necessarily a style I cherish very much but still well brewed and balanced.

Appearance - The beer pours a black/brown colour with an average size fizzy light brown coloured head. I can't see much carbonation due the darkness of the beer and there is some fair lacing on the sides of the glass. The head lasted for 5 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Chocolate, malts, smoke, roasted nuts

Taste & Mouth - The beer has a low amount of carbonation and it feels thin and watery on the tongue. I can taste chocolate, malts, and some smoke. There is also a surprising amount of hop taste. It ends with a malty/chocolate aftertaste.

Overall – I was on the fence with one.. it seemed to get worse as it got warmer. The chocolate taste just seems off.. like they used a cheap/low quality chocolate syrup in it. Anyways, it wasn't a complete waste of money, but I wouldn't buy this one again. (maybe I had a bad bottle..)
