Appearance: orangey-tan, cloudy*, nice layer of off-white rocky foam, great head retention and lots of lace

Aroma: wheaty with sliced Granny Smith apples, yoghurty Brett., and herbal hops; hints of dried orange peel and possibly coriander

Flavor: mild malt sweetness and a very gentle, subtle hop flavor sets the stage for the Brett. to fully stretch its legs in the mid-taste; hints of unripe peaches; finishes very dry with a smooth bitterness and spicy Brett. notes

Mouthfeel: medium-light body, spritzy-zesty carbonation, fluffy texture, slight astringency

Other comments: Wow, despite sitting undisturbed in the fridge for two days, the bottle *spewed all over the place when I popped the cap. Lost about half a cup of this delicious elixir! The aroma is very much akin to an Orval, but the taste is much maltier than that. One of the best saisons made in the US. Great stuff!

Update: I tried a second bottle a couple of months later and that one was not a gusher.

750ml bottle.

Pours hazy copper with a two inch head of rocky beige. Tattered lacing and a partial skim coat on the surface for the duration.

Aromatics lead off with pineapple, pear, red apples, wet hay, and tropical fruit. Hints of cut grass and forest floor follow though. Fallen fruit on wet hay and cut grass after a spring rain.

Light bodied with a crisp, zesty mouthfeel.

Ripe fruit with crackery malt running through starts the palate. Apples, pears, and pineapple with a trace of lemon. Shades of honey, biscuits, cloves, and yeasty funk follow through.

Finishes fruity, dry and a bit wine-like.

Nice Saison but the brett character is a bit subdued. Love the lush fruity character though.

Bottle SB34858, Best By 02/2018

A: Pours a quite hazy medium orange. Enormous fluffy and fizzy white head. Head fizzes away fairly quickly, leaving minimal lacing - just a little skidmark here and there. Good retention too, nice little island floats around forever.

S: Tart citrus and pears/apples as well. Quite funky. Hints of graham cracker.

T: Better than it smells. Slightly tart and funky pears (stronger here) with some lemons backing it up. Sweeter pears helps balance the light tartness. Graham cracker notes up front but turns into more of a dry saltine-like note in the middle. Drying in the finish with light citrus notes.

M: Medium bodied, smooth.

O: The smell kinda turned me off but the taste was great. Excellent balance of tart and sweet flavors leaving you with a tasty and refreshing saison. Almost no black pepper at all, uncommon in a saison. Mostly fruity and crackery flavors. Very nice saison, I enjoyed it a lot, it's up there with Boulevard Saison-Brett.

750 ml bottle poured into a red wine glass

Appearance: Pours a hazy orange with a strong, well defined white head. Head retention is very strong.

Smell: The smell is dominated by the typical saison profile, with only light brett influence at this point. Some citrus character likely from the brett.

Taste: The taste is what you would expect from the smell, with the only difference being a strong yeasty character. This beer is light on the spiciness and has a more citrusy character. Very nice!

Mouthfeel: Very good mouthfeel. Nice carbonation and extremely smooth.

Overall: This is an awesome saison and I am excited to put some age on a few bottles to see how it develops! The ABV is completely hidden and the taste is great, I suggest anyone who is on the fence about saisons in general to pick up this great example.

look: 4.5 | smell: 4.75 | taste: 5 | feel: 4.75 | overall: 4.75

Appearance: Pours a hazy orange gold into a tulip. A fine two-finger white head sits on top and hangs around, leaving nice patterns of lacing as I work my way through the glass. Beautiful.

Smell: Complex – it leads with citrus and pepper, along with a little breadiness and honey. There is funk there, but it’s pretty subtle. As it warms up I get some stone fruit notes.

Taste: The citrus, primarily lime, from the Brett continues to lead, but is quickly followed by traditional Belgian pepper and spice notes. Other fruit notes lurk around, and of course there’s a barnyard element. The story for me, though, is the balance. There’s a lot going on here among the citrus and the other fruits, the Belgian pepper and spice and the funk, but it all works together really well. I love Brett and have since I had my first beer with it years ago, but this beer makes me realize that it can be just as enjoyable when it’s laying back in the mix a bit.

Mouthfeel: Very light and clean in the mouth. There’s absolutely no suggestion of the ABV, which is a little higher than many saisons.

Drinkability: See above; although this is definitely one to be savored slowly (not least due to the ABV), it’s very, very drinkable. I think I’m in love.
