We happened upon this place while wandering around Williamsburg and Greenpoint this past Saturday night (we had left The Gutter and were heading to Greenpoint to find Polish food and some Zywiec). What a pleasant surprise! It was a cool, crisp Fall night - right as we entered, we were greeted by a large fireplace right in the center of the space. It's a very large room, with multiple bars, and an Italian wood-burning oven. At 9pm on a Saturday, we had no problem getting a seat (with choices at the bars or tables). The beer list is impressive, with about 20 drafts leaning heavily towards Germans (Mahrs, Schlenkerla, Ayinger, Gaffel, Hofstetten, Kostritzer and Jever) with a smattering of good Belgian and American selections, among others. Our group had a Porterhouse Oyster Stout, Firestone Union Jack, Mahrs Ungespundet and Schlenkerla Krausen. All tasted very fresh and were served at an appropriate temperature. There is also a good bottle list, although we didn't try any. The food is also very good, with an emphasis on pizza (from the wood-burning oven) and sausages. We tried a selection of three different sausages and Belgian frites. All were great. The service was pretty good - at first, we were worried we were going to get the 'indifferent Williamsburg hipster' attitude, but they warmed up to us quickly. I'm looking forward to my next visit.

So, it’s a large long open cavernous space with blind spots around brick pillars pieces and the like; the perfect place for fierce Velociraptors to set up on my shit. 2 bar pieces to the rear; the one to the right, a white marble topped horseshoe, copperish sheet paneled base and piping foot rail, with seating for 2 dozen on stools. Bar island in the center with tiered boozings on the stretch and a wraparound row of 50 taps (25 unique taps duped), on the end. Not really sure why they need to show like they have twice as many as they do but they do. Is curious, yes. The one to the left, a smaller wraphalfwayaround bar similar to over there (me, pointing) seating a dozen and a half. 25 taps there duped, as well. Once on the end running the corner, and another row of 25 on the stretch with nondescript handles. Boards above, no, wait, they’re not boards, it’s just a glass wall, with draft selections listed, and some cocktail choices. Bottled selections displayed shelved, and boozings just below on the wall. Drop bell lamps tracing above the bar.
Subway tiling over the order & pick up grillings to the rear in between the bar sections. It’s a pretty serious sausage/brat zone, with a slew of condiments & sauces, and fries & pretzels otherwise. They’ve got (like) 10 of them to choose from. Good stuff. Traditional, some specialty brats (duck, rabbit & veal, venison), and artisanal wares; served on pretzel buns. B&B got all sausaged up, claims of “They were very good” abound. And when I looked up, I discovered that they had very selfishly eaten all of their fries before I had a chance to woof on them. Very selfish.
Large wall of windows up front opening out over Nassau, and to whatever’s to the side, and a mural on the far wall. Brick looking floorings. Pillars down the center of the room; brick bases with iron cross pieces connecting each to other, and drop gumball lamps in rows from cross piece to cross piece. All sorts of tablings, round, rectangular, and banquet; dozens in all, and something, um, like a wood plank thing on wheels with a few pillows. The banquet tables are on wheels on tracks. Do they roll? And to where? And why? A stack of wood back there for the grillings and more on the backside of the front & center fireplace we are now sitting alongside of. Probs should mention the far bathroom corner of single stallings, with a cool foot pedal wash basin.
We were sold on 100 taps, but it’s really 25 taps duped 4 times throughout, 1/3 of which are German (Jever, Ayinger Celebrator Dopplebock & Brau Weisse, Radeberger Pils, Weihenstephaner Vitus Weizenbock, Erdinger Weissbier Dunkel, Gaffel Kolsch, Licher Weizen), and the remainder being a few other imports (Ridgeway Lump of Coal, Mikkeller Ris A La M’ale, Dentergems Wit, Duvel Single, Staropramen Pils), and then a pretty even split between craft local/regional (Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, Blue Point Blueberry Ale, Sixpoint Sweet Action, Ommegang Rare Vos, Victory Headwaters Pale Ale, Allagash White), and beyond (Two Brothers Cain & Ebel, Founders Centennial IPA, Lagunitas A Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’ Ale, Stone Smoked Porter, Green Flash West Coast IPA, Left Hand Milk Stout). I drank the Victory Headwaters Pale Ale, Green Flash West Coast IPA, & Weihenstephaner Vitus Weizenbock.
42 bottles & 9 cans, including 7 ciders & 2 N/A’s. ¼ of the bottle selections are German & Eastern Euro, but they’ve got some of everything. Okay, the sours are absurdly priced. Jolly Pumpkin Luciernaga (the firefly) for $40 = someone seriously smoking shit; Liefmans Goudenband for $30, BFM Abbaye De St Bon-Chien (2007) for $55, Panil Barrique for $40, I don’t know what they’re thinking. A few others, too, but definitely the sours. And a dozen wines, should you need to stray.
Diggin’ the tunes, Animals “It’s My Life”, Talking Heads “Psycho Killer”, Stones “Ruby Tuesday”, Bowie “Suffragette City”, and on and on. I have seen this place jammed; it is not that now, Sunday early afternoon. B&B really liked the place, its openness, all that. But when we came back a week later for D’s party, we found all the larger tables reserved (Bullshit!) No option for the group but a shortyier far side table grumble grumble. Phil (drunkenly) raved about this place being a blend of old neighborhood (Euro beer) meeting new scene (American craft); I felt it’s just a place with something of an identity crisis, but maybe he’s right and it’s just something for everyone. Comfortable lazy afternoon place, good drink, great eats.
