This beer smells of chocolate, chicory and coffee. Poured it into my boot mug and the head was huge and strong, tan colored with lots of lacing as it receded. Color is opaque dark brown. Great stout flavor with a more sweet then bitter finish. Mouthfeel is good with ample carbonation and a good balance of malt and hops. The higher ABV is almost non detectable, this brew is pure flavor. I could enjoy many of these beers as it is very smooth from start to finish. The price was ideal, 50% off a sixer at my local mercado. I will enjoy immensely. Hope they restock.

Lost Coast '8 Ball' Oatmeal Stout @ 6.3% , served from a 650 ml bottle purchased for $5.30

A-pour is dark brown from the bottle to near black in the glass with a small tan head which is leaving a spotty lace along the pint glass

S-roasted coffee , chocolate malts

T-smooth and crisp to start but gives way to a very sweet chocolate milk finish

MF-medium carbonation , full bodied , almost has a RIS feel on the palate

Ov-ok/good beer yes I'd buy again

12 oz bottle dated 5 Feb. 2013 served in a snifter.
A: Deep brown, nearly black in the glass, with a modest, bubbly tan head that has weak retention. Moderate lacing.

S: Pleasing aroma features dark roasted malts, a hint of smoke and a touch of sweet caramel.

T: Good flavor. Solid but middle-of-the-road, and, therefore, weak on the dimensions of interesting and distinctiveness.

M: Smooth; medium body.

O: Very good but not outstanding across the board.

Wow, I must say, after skimming the other reviews here I really wasn't expecting much. Received a bottle as part of a "beer of the month" club as a wedding present. Poured a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass.

What really makes this beer work for me is the chocolate flavor. The chocolate is really smooth, while managing to not be too creamy or too bitter. Hints of caramel and definitely some coffee flavor complement the chocolate without threatening to overwhelm it. As with most oatmeal stouts, there is nothing particularly bold going on here, but it manages to avoid falling into the "watered down" territory that so many oatmeal stouts seem to live in.

My biggest gripe with oatmeal stouts in general is that they usually have a very watery mouthfeel with minimal flavor to back it up. Here, the mouthfeel is for sure thin, but there's enough going on that it's not bothering me. While it would probably be a stretch to call this beer "complex," it has enough subtle, mild flavors working together that "delicate" might be more apt. Well done.

Came in the mail as part of a craft beer of the month selection (great x-mas present).

Poured into a pint glass.

Appearance was exactly what one would want from an oatmeal stout. A nice mustache-leaving head keeps throughout.

Smell- lots of toasted malts, a touch of chocolate

Taste- Malts are balanced nicely, sweetness does not dominate or limit this to a one-trick dessert pony. Hop in the finish feels just right.

Body- Nice and full, hearty. Just right.

Overall, did the trick and I will want to have some on hand on a regular basis if I can. Hope some east coast distributors carry it.

Had it with grilled turkey caesers salad.
