Notes:
A Belgian Strong Golden Ale, brewed with hibiscus flowers, ginger, thai palm sugar and local Chicago honey. Huitzi is a winter beer that doesn´t wallow in the dark cold days of this season. Like it’s namesake, the Aztec hummingbird god Huitzilopoctli who smashed the winter to allow the sun to return, Huitzi looks forward to the brighter promise of spring. We think of it as a winter cooler. As all our creations, this beer has it’s own Latin twist as it is brewed with flor de jamaica (hibiscus flower). The idea for this beer came when thinking about food and family gatherings. In Latin America, all family gatherings have something in common, “aguas frescas.” An agua fresca is fresh fruit or flowers diluted in water and (sometimes) sweetened. They are typically served at lunchtime in almost every restaurant in Mexico and Central America. The term means fresh water and their creativity and simplicity appeals to us. Aguas frescas represent a time with family, colleagues or friends as they gather and share a meal. A time to disconnect from the daily routine and enjoy food and conversation.

Appearance: Similar to Firestone Walker Barrel Ale, something I had in this same tasting. Honey-golden with excellent crystalline carbonation and nice lacing. Rosy tint as well.
Smell: Tangy sweetness and bitterness with a hint of hibiscus. Also some chamomile?
Taste/Mouthfeel: The first thing I taste is ginger, which creates an excellent bite in the mouthfeel. Very clean beer. Zesty herbal ginger subsides, and some herbal sweetness takes over. Definitely some hibiscus in this.
Overall Drinkability: I was very happy with this. One of the best beers I've had recently.

750 ml bottle has 8.7% abv.
Pretty orangey pink hue with good Belgian style bubbling. Pretty quick head, but there's a thin layer of off-white foam that sticks around pretty well.
The aroma is a good blend of soft floral, herbs, spices and somewhat tart fruit.
Some fruity tartness upfront with delicate floral notes. The middle has a somewhat spice and soft herbal laden backbone. Palate has some winey texture, but finishes pretty thin. The carbonation I see is not the carbonation I feel. I still think this is a tasty beer I will buy again.

(Served in a tulip)
A- This beer pours a hazy reddish-brown body with a bubbly white thick head that last for a few sips before becoming a thick band.
S- The aroma of hair perm and hibiscuis flowers gives way to a woody caramel malt note in the finish.
T- The fruity tart flavor of jamaca juice has a light herbal finish with some ginger spice and a bitterness mixed with fruit punch that lingers after each sip. The dry herbal spice flavor grows and clashes more with the other fruity flavors as it opens.
M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel with a tight fizz and some alcohol warmth enhances the bitter herb bite.
O- This beer has lots of different flavors but they are all odd and seem to fight each other and there are no malt or yeast character flavors to anchor it. Just odd and a bit weird.

750ml into a tulip.
A: Pours brownish-amber with a soapy off-white head.
S: Very earthy, flowery aroma. Honey, herbal, apricot seed, light grassiness, molasses, subtle ginger.
T: The taste lets the base BSPA shine through a bit more. Cakey pale malt, estery clove, honey, light floral bitterness, a bit of peach.
M: Light-bodied with zingy carbonation.
O: Although the smell was a little off-putting, this tasted pretty nice. Nothing too special, but decent.

Bottle purchased at Capone's in Chicago poured into a tulip. Pinkish gold hue with a small white head that dissipates. Smell is alcohol and belgian yeasts. Taste is tart at first from the hibiscus- I was hoping for this and happy to find it right away. Tartness breaks to some sweetness, ends with yeast notes. First brew I have tried from 5 Rabbit and I'm not disappointed- this is unique and not at all bad.

Served in a tulip glass at Fountainhead.
Gotta admire these guys' commitment to the whole Aztec mythology schtick. This stuff pours a partly cloudy sunburst auburn topped by a finger of white foam. The nose comprises sweet flowers, ginger, clove, banana, light wheat, Belgian candi sugar, and a touch of mild lactic sourness. Everything comes together merely cosmetically (as far as the nose can perceive cosmetic scents, o' course), with no true chemistry bringing them together to overcome a common adversity. (I may or may not need to stop watching Major League and Mighty Ducks...) The taste really showcases the ginger and flowers amidst a sorta bland Belgian pale ale backdrop, one that consists of wheat, clove, light black pepper, banana, and a touch of orange peel. There's a lingering sweetness throughout, detracting from any Belgian-style character the yeast may or may not have been vainly imparting the whole time. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a slightly grainy feel. Overall, an alright brew, but one whose use of flowers and herbs and whatnot seems to detract from what could have been a decent BPA (...or they covered up a mediocre one...). Not my cup o' tea.
