Formerly Outlaw IPA

Untamed, unpredictable and full of unforgettable character; that's a Rustler for you. This IPA's solid malt base quietly saunters in with a slightly spicy aroma, hints of sweet pine, citrus and apricot tones and American hops for a mildly bitter finish. Rustler is the likable renegade you can't help rooting for.

It's a distinctive different n flavor, not your average beer. But the spice notes make it a drink that should not be eaten with food. Otherwise it's not bad.

more of a classic, even old school styled ipa here, i may have had this when it was called outlaw, but appreciated it all over again now as an idaho resident now. still pale brassy in color, just a pinch of a richer crystal malt to this in looks, but not amber or anything at all, and nice and clear and lacy headed. aroma and flavor show a lot of balance, a bit more malt support and structure than some of their newer ones, sweetness through most of it, but the hop bitterness sets in earlier than the finish, so it never seems out of balance or heavy to me, just kind of hearty. the flavor is somewhat generic, not boring, but insanely familiar, like a recipe a million brewers have all executed about this well, but freshness is key, and so far every ipa type i have had from these guys, at the brewery or around town, has been max fresh, which really helps. a little honey note and a toasted thing through the middle, some pine and weed at the end, really satisfying and a drinker when its cold before it heavies up a little at temperature. i think i like the recoil better, as its way more unique, but its hard to argue with a solidly constructed ipa like this...

edit: this seems to be somewhat inconsistent beer, at least whats out in the market is. what i mean, is that when super fresh and ice cold, this really is a fantastic ipa, still a little old school but with distinct fresh orange character in the middle, a touch of unique almost honey sort of sweetness, and great smoothness and balance through the finish, very distinctive beer when you catch it right. unfortunately, its not always so fresh in the cans, and when it warms up even a little bit, it becomes more generic and kind of heavy. i was super impressed with this yesterday in its perfect form, a totally different beer that way. raising some scores here to reflect what its like when the stars align!

A very refreshing and drinkable IPA. A nice soothing melon is the most distinct and unique taste of the beer. The smell is different, but no less appealing with strong bread and fruity notes. The only thing I'd have against it is the strange bitter taste in the back of the tongue.

Appearance: Pours a hazy deep amber with almost no head and very little lacing.

Smell: Malt Citrus come through.

Taste: Some malts mixed in with the pine and citrus notes. Orange, grapefruit, and tangerine.

Feel: Carbonation Is a bit flat. Just a little heavy.

Overall: This is a good example of a citrus IPA. Bitterness is good and a good aftertaste.

Clear dark copper colored pour with a one-finger off-white head. Aroma is herbal with a hint of malt. Taste has a resinous bitter flavor upfront. Also has a strong pine flavor as well. Despite the strong bitterness, a good bit of malt comes through in mild nut, caramel and bread flavors. Finishes with a strong lingering resiny bitterness.

Good head disappears leaving long lacy legs
For once, when a company says it's hoppy with a strong malt flavor they were not b.s.'ing. A good solid sweetness not unlike a marzen and solid biscuit flavor followed by assertive hops that are simultaneously fruity and bitter.
Mouthfeel is gentle and definitely not over carbonated.
Overall very well done!

Snappy little IPA with just enough character to set it apart in the sea of regional choices. A little maltier from a flavor profile than your typical west coast IPA, but still light bodied. Hops are pretty robust but lean earthy, british style, but with some citrus as well. Clean finish, just a touch tinny, but highly quafffable. Picked up all the Idaho IPAs they had at the Twin Falls Fred Meyer on a road-trip to Yellowstone, of the 5, this was a top contender.
