Ruckus Brewing - Hoptimus Prime - Bomber

Shared this brew with da_beers.

Look - Pours a clear filtered copper amber with a rambunctious soapy head that leaves rings of chunky sticky lacing.

Smell - slightly sweet malt with sour apple cider and pineapple citrus, Simcoe hops. Not DIPA aroma really, had me worried at this point.

Taste - No. This is pretty much a perfect example of how NOT to make a DIPA. Malt heavy, sweet apple slight hop citrus.

Mouthfeel - At least the hops are present somewhat here. Sticky malts, warm and boozy, medium bodies, decent drinkability.

Overall - Just OK, not sure what they were going for here. Apparently having a cool name does not constitute a good beer. Drinkers who prefer malt in your DIPA might enjoy this brew a bit more than I did.

After being supremely disappointed with my first two reviews of the night, I pulled this out of the fridge to save the day... and it didn't.

A - Clear dark copper color with four massive fingers of chunky white head. Beautiful appearance, star of the show.

S - Not very hoppy. Sweet malts with pineapple notes. Not your typical DIPA smell at all. Slightest earthyness at the end with an apple cider note.

T - A let down here. Very malty with a confused apple/citrus feel. Simcoe hops are faint, I would have like much more. Needs less malt and more hops.

M - Sticky, leaves nice aftertaste. Pretty drinkable for a DIPA, but again, not a typical one.

O - Not to excited about this one. Was pumped by the name and graphics, expecting a hop blast - not at all however.

Great name and label for a double IPA, though despite a bit of a gimmicky exterior, it's also surprisingly drinkable as well. I went about a year in between having this beer, and enjoyed it substantially more the second time around. Simcoe is the star of the show here; and while it probably won't win any awards, I would say this is probably one of the more enjoyable "New York" DIPAs I've had.

Pours a slightly crimson-amber hue, and looks inviting. Smell is pleasant, but does not promise the amount of hops the name suggests. There is light lacing apparent after a few sips. The taste is more malt than hops, with the alcohol coming in late. A very drinkable double ipa, a good addition to any Wednesday evening.

Bomber poured into glass give medium sized creamy, almost pure white head. Head recedes so a small amount around the edges, with heavy lacing. The color is a bright, clear copper. Smell mostly of malts which are pale and caramel-ly. Also a light smell of orange and grapefruit, maybe a bit of lemon. Interesting smell, but weak.

Taste follows the nose, with more pronounced fruity hops. Caramel malt start but give way to orange and grapefruit, with a pinnaple and lemon finish. Taste is more pronounced than the nose, but still a little muted. Medium to heavy body, creamy, low carbonation.

Served on-tap at Texas Arizona in Hoboken, NJ

A: Pours a very lightly hazy deep golden peach in color with light to moderate amounts of visible carbonation and orange + amber highlights. The beer has a finger tall dense foamy light beige head that slowly reduces to a thick film covering the majority of the surface of the beer with a thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of citrus/grapefruit/orange hops over the top of a lighter aroma of caramel malts.

T: Upfront there are moderate flavors of caramel malts that impart a decent amount of caramel sweetness but that is quickly overtaken by the strong flavors of the hops - citrus/grapefruit/orange really stand out with a very light hint of pine. Moderate amounts of lingering bitterness and just a hint of alcohol in the finish.

M: Just heavier than medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Sticky.

O: This beer is pretty big with fairly intense hop aromas, hop flavors, and ABV - making it a sipping beer not a session or easy drinking beer. Moderate amounts of lingering bitterness and hints of alcohol in the taste make this one you need to slowly enjoy.
