I was on my lunch break from jury duty, so I didn't feel at all bad about having a second beer with my lunch. The name "Pigmeat Markham Smoked Rye" sounds strange, disjointed, and somewhat intimidating (like a noticeably unwashed hobo with a limp that seems to be following you), but I wanted to try it anyway. The first impression isn't at all intimidating, with a deep amber color topped by a quickly-diminishing, creamy off-white head. The aroma is likewise quite subtle yet welcoming, with a dull caramel sweetness that is punctuated by bits of earth and wood.
The flavor is more pronounced and distinctive, with a sweet, fruity woodiness being featured, and the smoke progressively building underneath. The smoke isn't as potent and jarring as it can be in many smoked beers, but it is rather sweet and enticing (not unlike the smoke emanating from a wood-fired barbecue pit). In addition, the very-fine carbonation creates a substantially smooth, resinous texture that allows the flavors to linger. Overall, the beer is different and flavorful without being too assertive.

My favorite of the beers I tried at Bull City.Poured into a nonic a deep rich amber with a thinner but creamy white head,it was nice to look at.Aromas of light smoke and subdued tartness,a noticable pine note came thru as well.Smokiness was the first thing I tasted with a more assrtive rye tartness as well, somewhat dry and earthy in the finish with a light smattering of pine.A solid rye beer that's not over done with smoke.
