Weihenstephaner is famous for it's history. Their beers are still highly rated after being invented hundreds of years ago. Their brews are readily available in many locations in the US, but many people pass them over for the rare finds. It is when I review their beers that I am reminded how amazing they are.

This beer smells really good. This beer has a lot of really good esthers and malt. I recommend really pulling in the great balance and clean smell.

The flavor is also excellent. The Hefe-Dark is a very good example of flavor following the smell consistently. What you smell is what you get.

Needless to say, this is an amazing beer. I'm glad I got around to reviewing it.

500 mL bottle from the LCBO; best before 02/07/2013. I have been seeking this one out for a while - dunkelweizens aren't necessarily my favourite type of wheat beer, but past experience with Weihenstephaner suggests this will be nothing less than a superb example of the style.

Pours an amber-orange colour, clouded up with suspended sediment, and topped with two fingers of fluffy, creamy, sparkling white head. As with most of the beers I've had from this brewery, the head retains itself nicely, lasting well into the glass, smearing the sides with lacing before it dies down into a bumpy cap/collar. The aroma is fresh and yeasty, very reminiscent of their flagship hefe - lots of toasted wheat malt, some banana, bubblegum and clove spice notes, with a few added twinges of dark fruit or brown sugar. Pretty enticing for sure.

Most of the features from the nose follow through into the flavour - lightly toasted wheat malt provides the backbone, with the usual accompanying notes of banana, bubblegum, yeast and cloves. Much like the aroma, the taste certainly reminds me of their regular hefe - though this one comes across with toastier malts, more of a caramel/brown sugar sweetness amongst the banana, and perhaps a bit more spice toward the finish. The aftertaste is of wheaty malt and spice, and doesn't cling to the palate for very long. The mouthfeel is silky smooth, with moderately high carbonation that gives it a prickly feel on the palate. On the light side of medium-bodied - a little watery, but all of the sediment gives it at least some thickness. Very easy to drink, but as with any dunkel I doubt I'd be up for more than one or two glasses per night.

Final Grade: 4.35, a solid A grade. Although I have always been a pretty big hefeweizen fan, dunkelweizen acceptance has eluded me - probably because there have never been any particularly good ones available locally. Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Dunkel changes all that for me, as it shows the same level of quality and craftsmanship as their flagship hefe. Even though I probably like the hefe a bit more, this stuff is still a strong contender in the wheat beer category, and undoubtedly the best dunkel I've ever had. This is a delicious brew, and no fan of German wheat beer should hesitate to try it. A magnificent selection for my 400th review on BA, one that I will assuredly pick up again soon.

The beer pours a fiery dark orange, bordering on amber, with a massive, cream colored, two fingers-width head and medium sized, creamy bubbles. The body of the beer is dark orange and hazy, with a proper Hefe-haze, and a light carbonation moving through the beer. In the glass the beer is really quite lovely, and reminds me of corn syrup. Lacing is thick and fluffy on the sides of the glass, leaving almost-full rings. On the nose the beer smells richly creamy with banana and a good nip of clove spice. The darker wheat malt seems to give the beer some caramelly hints, and the esters suggests plantains as well as bananas fried in brown sugar. There is even a faint citrus note coming from either the light hops or the yeast, and further adding to the complex smell.

The beer tastes of subdued banana, spicy clove, and sweet wheat grain. It begins surprisingly light with hints of plantains, before opening into unripe banana flavors with spicy clove notes, and then folding into a thick wheat grain and spice flavoring that lasts in the mouth. In the middle of the taste there is also an almost-pear flavor alongside the banana esters of the yeast, and there also rich caramel notes alongside the wheat grain in the aftertaste. On the mouth, the beer feels creamy and smooth, with a medium body. Carbonation is velvety, and the tongue is left sticky in the back with malty saliva, while the rest of the mouth feels quite dry. Overall this is a lovely Dunkelweizen. I feel that some of the rich banana esters from Weihenstephan’s Hefeweizen are lost here in the darker malts, which is too bad, but the addition of heavy wheat grain flavors is nice. The smell is definitely more complex than the taste though. This beer is a classic and definitely worthy of a taste, though I hold their Hefeweizen up as a better beer than this.

Poured from a large bottle into a Weihenstephaner wheat beer glass.

Gorgeous head, beautiful medium nut brown color with golden edges, huge lacing all down the glass.

Smell of cloves, banana, nutmeg, wheat malt, and sugar.

A taste for the ages, beautiful banana flavors, with dark caramel, nuttiness, sugar, wheat, baked baguettes, absolutely delicious.

Mouthfeel is thick, but super sessionable.

Poured from a pint bottle into a Guinness imperial pint glass.

Appearance- Very hazy amber/orangeish color. Two fingered fluffy white head that left no lacing.

Smell- Absolutely incredible. Lemon, orange, coriander, yeast, malts. Very pronounced aromas.

Taste- Yeasty/breadyness up front, some light citrus, not much roasted malt character. No hop profile either.

Mouthfeel- Smooth with a good bit of carbonation.

Overall- This is a good beer, but not my favorite style.

A: golden amber, with heavy carbonation and minimal cloudiness, with a very rich head that comes with the style. I would had preferred darker colors on my dark hefe, and a bit more cloudiness, but this is not bad at all
3.75/5

smell: the smell is dominated by cloves and phenol spice, as well as the familiar and rich smell of wheat malt.
4/5

taste: a very balanced, but minimilistic taste, that leans heavily on the clove side vs the banana and bubblegum flavors I much prefer. For the color, and the said "dark" hefewisen, their is not hint of darker, roastyer flavors. I jsut tastes like a more middle of the road hefewisen, and I cant say I'm very impressed .
3.25/5

mouthfeel: this is where the beer really shines. rich, creamy mouthfeel that is easy to drink and easy on the mouth, benefiting greatly from its heavy carbonation.
5/5

overall: to be honest, I was expecting more from this beer, as the reviews where high, and the brewery's reputation is VERY impressive, but really, it did not come off as the beer I was expecting, which was, a slight above average regular hefewisen with a amber color instead of a straw color.

On tap at St. Veronus in Peterborough.

Cloudy light brown in colour with a big white head that gives way to a fair amount of lacing.

Smell is mostly banana and spice with a bit of breadiness behind it.

Tastes of citrus with a little bit of banana and hops, very, very smooth.

Medium carbonation and body, this is just a great tasting beer. Not long after having it on tap, they had some bottles at the LCBO and I picked up a bunch of them.

A- dark brown clear body with a huge white head that leaves little lacing. Chunky settling.

S - unripe bananas; yeast, cloves, malt.

T- big wheat, caramel, clove, belgian spices. Delicious and fresh and drinkable. Demands many sips and gulps.

M- low carbonation; medium high mouthfeel

Overall a delicious, fulfilling brew. Like their hereweissbeir but more flavorful.

Poured from a 500 mL served in a Notorious BIG pint glass

A- Pours a murky orange-brown body with a 3-finger off white head.

S- Not too potent. Mostly spice with a little bit of banana and cloves. Maybe some dark fruits trying to peak in.

T- Quite similar to the nose with a lot of wheat up front. Not as fruity as I was expecting, but spicier. There seems to be a bit of a disconnect between the different flavors at a colder temperature but it becomes much more enjoyable as it warms.

M- Medium feel and decent carbonation. FInishes quickly overall and a nice little tingle sticks around on the tongue

O- I'm no expert on the style, but I'd say this does the style justice. Easy to drink but I'd still take their regular hefeweizen over their dark.

Served on-draught into a 500ml hefeweissbier glass at the Delirium Cafe in Brussels. Reviewed from notes taken June 2011.

A: Pours a two finger head of nice soft cream, good thickness, and above average retention. Colour is a nontransparent dark brown.

Sm: Roasted barley (in a dunkel?) Floral hops. Heavy caramelized malt. Some nuts.

T: Caramelized malt dominates the first half, but the second half feels empty. Slight nutty character on the fringe with hints of cream. Quite imbalanced structurally, with radically different halves. Very strange build compared to most dunkels I've had; I have to wonder if the tap is set up correctly. I wish the flavour early on remained for the latter half.

Mf: Smooth and wet, complementing the flavours of the body.

Dr: The caramelized malt is overdone. The balance is off. The price is fair, and she drinks pretty easy. Worth a go, but better out of the bottle.

500 ml bottle poured into my perfect pint. Batch 7102 is printed on the back of the label.

Appearance: A slightly hazy light brown beer. The beer itself does not look too nice but the head is glorious at a foamy three finger size that leaves splotchy lacing.

Smell: Wheat, bananas, and some cloves and general spiciness.

Taste: Similar to their regular hefe, except slightly more toasted. Toasted grains with wheat leading the way, a slight fruity note and nice spiciness backing it all up.

Mouthfeel: The carbonation is a little piquant, while the body is thin to middling but really smooth. The flavors do coat the mouth all around nicely.

Overall: I do like this dunkel, but was not wowed by it. Maybe my palette is off tonight. I ought to give it another go.

500ml bottle into hefe glass

Pours murky yellow/brown, not an entirely pleasant look especially for those unused to the style. Big fluffy off-white head but smaller than the normal hefe. Smell is spicy bananas. Taste is dry and spicy and yeasty, very dry finish and a bit of boozines (strange for the lowish abv). Malt is a bit more prominent than in the regular hefe and adds some sweetness. Mouthfeel is dry, spicy, and highly carbed. A smidgeon heavier in weight than the standard hefe.

Not as good as the classic Weihen hefe but still a very good beer, more yeast and malt flavor but doesn't seem to pull together as well as the classic.

Review #100! Pours a swamp-like hybrid color, dark copper and dark tan, opaque and murky with an off-white head that plumps up big time and looks super thick and creamy. The head is long lasting and easy to conjure up from nothing due to the volatile nature of the brew. Nose hits just like you'd expect with an initial bubblegum hint, quickly surrounded by clove and some other kitchen spices, maybe coriander. Both malty and fruity on the tongue - bananas are, of course, the most prevalent, followed by plums and grapes. Yeast sinks into the tastebuds and provides a nice, toasted-bread-like backbone for the sweet fruity malts to stand upon. No real apparent bitterness here, and hops aren't noticeable unless you try extremely hard (and even then, it's probably all in your mind). But this brew was meant for the malt! Thin-medium body with a great deal of carbonation, leaving a nice snap on the tongue up front and through the finish.

Another amazing brew by Weihenstephaner. Hits all the marks and traits you'd expect from a hefeweissbier - bananas, cloves, breads, yeast, toasty malts, etc. Remains simple while exceeding at everything it does. This is a must-try, and the best part is that it's readily available in most places.

2nd of the five bottles of the gift pack. Poured the 500ml into traditional hefeweizen glass that came with the pack. Excellent, though not as inviting as Hefeweissbier.

Pours with a huge three-four finger thick off white head. Has good retention. Decent lacing. Color is copper-brown. Against the light, the top is darker compared to the bottom. A lot of cloudiness as is typical of wheat beers. Not very dark. Slightly less number of bubbles.

Smell is more banana and cloves, with the former dominating. Slight hints of dark malt and some sweetness. This one is more banana than hefeweissbier.

Taste is very much similar to the nose, with dominant wheat beer taste. Slight hop presence. Bready taste. Not a lot of sweetness. Overall taste is well balanced. No hints of roasted malts.

Mouth feel: Light to medium bodied feel. Moderate on carbonation makes it much more drinkable. Refreshing but not as much as its hefeweissbier brother.

Overall style wise it scores 4.25-4.5 Personally It is a good beer but nothing that i am a fan of. I did not like it much. 3.5

Amber and brown in color with a slight chill haze. Poured with a huge, billowy off-white foam with excellent staying power that leave thick sheets of lacings on the glass. Sweet banana and clove aromas with an earthy sweet toasted malt aroma beneath. Creamy smooth delicate feel with a clean crisp finish. Combination of sweet banana and light toasted malt flavors up front followed by spicy clove flavors through the middle that usher in a light hop bitterness toward the end. Like the feel the flavors finish clean and crisp with a sweet fruity banana aftertaste. Fabulous, earthy, delicate aromas, flavors and feel.

A: Pours a hazy medium brown in color with some golden and orange highlights when held up to the light and moderate to heavy amounts of visible carbonation. The beer has a three finger tall beige head that reduces to a thick film covering the entire surface of the beer evenly and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light to moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate aromas of banana and clove along with some lighter notes of wheat, darker malts, yeast, and spices.

T: Tastes very similar to the smell with wheat and darker malts upfront and moderate to strong flavors of banana, clover, yeast, and spices.

M: On the lighter side of medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Refreshing and smooth.

Drank from a one pint, 0.9 fl.oz. bottle purchased at Cambridge Wine & Spirits, Cambridge, MA
Served in a weizen glass

The initial pour yielded a hazy, copper-mahogany body that was topped by a five-finger, light tan, billowing crop of foam. The head was super dense and creamy and it deposited drippy patches of lacing along the glass. When the sediment was added to the beer it became turbid. A dramatic plume of yeast cascaded down through the liquid, reminding me of when cream is slowly added to iced coffee.

The nose was fantastic. Spice notes dominated. Clove, nutmeg and allspice were quite apparent. Crisp, powdery and yeasty. Bubblegum came through strong. Semi-sweet overall. A hint of smoke was noticeable as well.

The flavor profile was a half step below the aroma but very impressive nonetheless. Like the nose, the it too was very spicy. Clove and nutmeg were the most dominant spice notes. The beer was wheaty and tart in the center. Yeasty and phenolic with strong bubblegum and banana notes. The finish was crisp and dry. Supremely balanced and drinkable. Toward the end of the glass, some earthy hops began to appear.

The mouthfeel was super slick and creamy. Lighter bodied but remarkably smooth.

Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Dunkel is an outstanding offering from an fantastic brewery. I love finding beers this good that are neither expensive nor that difficult to come across.

Special thanks to my girlfriend’s parents for bringing me back a Weihenstephaner gift pack straight from Bavaria. They’ll never see this, but I just wanted to mention them!

500 mL bottle poured into a Weihenstephaner weizen glass at fridge temperature.

L – Hazy deep amber color with a big 5-finger cream-colored frothy, billowing head. Excellent retention but not much lacing unfortunately.

S – All the usual Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier players are here with bready and grainy malted wheat, banana, and cloves. The new addition is the toasty, caramel aroma from the Vienna/Munich malts. Really nice.

T – Follows the nose nicely. It is sweet all the way through with bready and grainy wheat coming in first, then bubblegum and banana, and then the toasted and caramel malt flavors. There’s a nice spicy yeast finish with peppery and clove notes.

F – Medium-bodied with great carbonation, a crisp but creamy mouthfeel, and a spicy and dry finish. Spicy yeast lingers for a great amount of time.

O – This beer is no different than the rest of their offerings – Weihenstephan is the king of German wheat beers. The beers from this brewery define their respective styles. Not much more needs to be said.

Weihenstephaner's Hefeweissbier Dark (henceforth "Dunkel") pours a dark, hazy tawny body that is slightly more translucent than expected when held up towards a dim ceiling light. The head on this beer is big and has tons of staying power. I can't recall the last time I had a beer whose head stuck around this long. I very gently swirled the glass as the beer reached the half-way point, and was delighted to see an eruption of slightly off-white foam.

Cloves dominate the nose at first, though notes of sweet roasted malts and floral hops do manage to assert themselves. As the beer warms, flavors of banana, golden raisins, and apricots move to the fore.

The taste follows the nose at first. At first sip the taste of sweet, roasted malt is just a touch too strong. But as the beer warms, and as the palate grows accustomed to the malt, the bittering hops emerage, and the sweetness recedes and integrates into perfect balance. The last 2/3 of this bottle were perfect. Golden raisins and unsulphured apricots accentuate aromas of clove and ripe banana. The roasted malt and buttery yeast play an important role here. In great Hefeweissbier, buttery yeast and lightly roasted wheat malts generate banana flavors. In this Dunkel, the roasted malt is toasted just enough to create the illusion of a brown-butter braise. The best sips of this beer taste of brown butter braised banana seasoned with a few golden raisins, apricots, ground cloves and just a hint of nutmeg.

It is difficult to imagine improving on the mouthfeel. At first, the carbonation is a bit sharp, just like the spicy clove flavor that dominates the palate. As the beer warms and richer notes of banana and sweet dried fruits come into balance, a gentle swish around the tongue transforms this beer's medium-full body into a mouthful of creamy, viscous foam. A perfect complement to this Dunkel's toasted, buttery flavors.

The fact that Hefeweissbier Dunkel is not my favorite of Weihenstephaner's beers ought to evince my admiration for this brewery. Each of their beers shows the kind of elegant balance that most breweries can only dream of achieving. Do yourself a favor and pick up a bottle.

Taste is great, wonderful balance of yeast spices with banana, clove in the highlights, malt flavors from the wheat and hints of chocolate or toast.

Served from growler into a sampler shaker. Poured a very hazy yellow-orange with a half finger white head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, bread, banana, fruit, and subtle clove. The flavor was of sweet malt, bread, banana, fruit, clove, and spice. It had a light feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a fairly good brew. I really liked the spice aspect going on in this one as it added quite a nice touch to all of the typical bread and fruit flavors you would typically expect from the style. It was very easy on the palate and fairly well balanced throughout. Definitely worth trying for the curious and the fans of the style alike. A must try.

(4.0) A: Attractive caramel tinged amber colour with a very tall creamy and dense foam head. Very good retention with decent lacing as it recedes.

(4.0) S: Dark fruits (plums, cherries), banana, fresh grains, subdued caramel, tart apricot, clove, yeast, and honey. Picking up a honey graham cracker aroma (like Golden Grahams cereal) and it smells good! Well rounded and definitely inviting.

(4.5) T: Grains, banana, cloves, and herbal elements of a hefeweissbier joined with honey, graham cracker, caramel, and some dark fruits (mainly plum). This still keeps a relatively lighter taste profile even with the darker characteristics making this very drinkable. A wide range of varying tastes that compliment each other very well. Outstanding.

(4.0) M: Medium bodied with a moderate fizzy carbonation. Slightly chewy with a certain dryness and a faint bitterness.

(4.0) D: A solid Weihenstephaner option and a nice style to enjoy this time of year, while mother nature transitions from summer to fall. Great stuff.
