I most recently had this brew at a biergarden while out on the town but, I can (and do) get the same bottle every day at the party store at the entrance to my neighborhood.

A - Poured a hazy medium brown with a 1 1/4" head that dissipated pretty quick to light sticky lacing that marked each drink I took down the side of the big weizen glass it was served in. Beautiful!

S - Banana bread. Plain and simple. No hop or malt aromas. Typical of the style. Makes you want to tip the glass RIGHT NOW!!!

T - The banana bread smell is manifest in full on the palette with no noticeable hop flavors and has a clean finish. Dangerous!

M - The mouthfeel on this one is medium for an unfiltered wheat beer.

D - WOW! This one could be dangerous on a summer day, make that any day, when you've got a good thirst built up! If you like weizen beers, this is a MUST TRY!

16.9oz brown bottle purchased at McKinnon's in Salem. Pours a murky brown-red body with over an inch of khaki-colored head. Smells fruity, with ripe banana, date and nut. Tastes like banana, nut, spice, caramel, toffee, with chocolate and coffee notes in the background. Ample carbonation compliments a medium to full body to make this a super-drinkable super-complex beer. I'm beyond impressed.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 1 pint 0.9oz bottle into a Weizen Glass. The abv is listed on the label at 5.3% and there is no freshness date.

Appearance: It has a deep hazy orange amber body with visible carbonation. A quick pour fills the glass with foam. After a minute to settle I very slowly finished pouring and ended up with a nice three finger head. The light beige head hangs on well and makes lots of cool lace patterns on the glass.

Smell: Big German yeast notes rush up to fill my nose. The aroma is all about the classic banana notes with some mild clove and bready sweet malt.

Taste: The best way to describe this beer is that is like banana bread with nuts and chocolate chips. The palate is a firm medium body with nice active carbonation.

Notes: Outstanding!!! This beer is a work of wheat beer art.

This brew (along with everything from this brewery) is just another example of what excellent beer is all about. Nice chocolatey-looking color as you would expect from a dark weiss beer and the taste is nothing short of outstanding. Very smooth, not at all harsh or "too strong" even for those not accustomed to this type of beer. Generally, I prefer Hefe-weizens to their darker cousins but this is an outstanding exception as this ranks as one of my all time favorites.

Appearance: Pours a beautiful medium chocolate color with edges that are a shade lighter. Cloudy as all hell, with lots of bubbles racing to the top of my glass. It's head starts out massive and shrinks down to a steady 1-inch cap.

Smell: Fairly spicy with suggestions of apple, banana, clove, tart wheat, lemon, and bubblegum.

Taste: Dark wheat beer perfection with a glorious balance of the fruitiness from the banana and apple flavors, the soft spiciness, and the tart freshness from the wheat. All of the flavors intermingle well with each other, without overpowering and taking over control of the palate. This is the blueprint for what a Dunkel Hefeweissbier should taste like. Unmatched...

Mouthfeel: At first, the yeast in the body fools you into thinking it's thicker than it really is. But as it warms in your mouth, it shows it's true colors: a thin-to-medium body with a crisp and tart, yet soft and round mouthfeel that just begs for another sip. Then another...

Drinkability: As high as they come. I could easily drain glass after glass of this nectar in the summer...oh, who am I kidding?! This beer is amazing in any season.

Absolutely world-class. If you're curious what wheat beers are 'really' supposed to taste like, this and it's lighter brother are German Wheat Bier 101. Take a seat, 'cause class is in session!

I bought a bottle of this by mistake, thinking I had grabbed two bottles of the regular hefe. I certainly wasn't disappointed in my blunder when I poured this beer into a hefe glass. Nice coloring, a dark khaki almost and of course hazy. Smell is incredibly robust. There is a sweetness in the aroma that is very difficult to describe and something I haven't really found in any other weisse beer before this one. This beer tastes phenomenal, hints of fruit flavors and very smooth. It was a little to easy to put down a 16.9oz bottle in no time. If imports didn't cost as much as they do, this would always be in my refrigerator.

Gorgeous color and a whipped cream cap. Really pleasing aroma, low on banana and high on a sharp sour fruit flavor. Flavor is awesome! This is my kind of dunkel. Good soft wheat and a sharp cut of sour fruit. High level of carbonation feels nice and the body feels light and airy. This is really good beer! Hint of berry and slight mineral. Love it!

Bottle poured into a glass

A: A hazy orange-brown with a white, half-centimeter head. Good retention of the moderately thick and moussy head and beautiful lacing signature.

S: Banana, pineapple and clove in the nose. Good balance and presence of phenols and fruity esters. Perhaps some bubblegum tones. As the beer warmed, banana bread was noted

T: Banana and clove very prominent in this one, with low malty notes. Roasted malt character comes through as the beer warms but maintains it supporting role in deference to the yeast's symphony. A nice tart and dry finish.

M: A fluffy fullness (not big or full-bodied nor with overpowering flavors) that finishes relatively lighter. Good and rich carbonation.

Notes: I am on a dunkelweizen push right now. Aventinus on tap was probably my favorite because of its darker fruit tones. The Moosbacker was also a favorite because it shared the dark fruit character. As far as hitting the mark for a catagory, this beer (and brewery) does it very well.

Poured from a 16 oz bottle into a Weihenstephaner weizen.

A - Pours a deep coppery color with some red-orange hues throughout. The head is a thing of sheer beauty, thick and fluffy with long lasting retention. The bubbles slowly rise showing solid carbonation. The weizen glass truly showcases this beer perfectly. Lots of lacing.

S - Banana, bubble gum, yeasty, green apple. Incredibly clean and refreshing scents, especially as you imbibe in the first sip, intaking a strong whiff as the beer hits your lips.

T - Bubble gum, banana, cloves; yeasty with darker malts showing up at the end similar to toffee or some kind of caramel maybe. Hops are barely present. I should add that there is some kind of citrusy taste present which adds a nice touch. Absolutely delicious.

M - Incredible smooth and soft with a light to medium body. Carbonation is in complete check. Finishes very dry.

D - I could have this anytime of year, though I prefer it during the colder months. Easily my favorite dunkel, which should be no surprise considering its ranks among the style.

I purchased the 16.9 fl. oz. bottle, which gave me nearly two pints of this outstanding beer. Once in the glass, the hefe-dunkel showed a dark orange/red color, quite nice, with a huge top of creamy, off-white foam. The beer leaves virtually no lace on the glass, and once the head finally dissipates, a thin layer never leaves the liquid. Aromas of sweet wheat, clove, honey and a touch of pepper cross the nose.
The taste of this beer is all malt, creamy and slightly sweet, with a hint of smoke and pepper in the aftertaste. Just the slightest tight hop essence can be discerned on the inner cheeks, but it’s not nearly as fruity as normal hefeweiss beers, with minimal tastes of apricot or grape, although these tastes are slightly more prominent as the beer warms. The mouthfeel is near perfect, a slight fizz on the tongue but almost not carbonation in the back of the mouth, perfect for the creamy texture of the brew. This beer succeeds at staying somewhat easy drinking, almost light, and can be enjoyed in summer, but has more taste and body. This is a perfect choice beer-wise toward the cooler weather and the wonderful fall and Oktober selections to come.
This beer might possibly be the best dark wheat beer I have come across. It only gets a drop in drinkability because I'm not a huge hefe fan.

Everything about this beer is exceptional, as is the case with nearly all things Weihenstephaner. It pours a beautiful cider brown, with a massive, puffy white head that can pile high over the rim of the glass without spilling. Carbonation is visible in the glass, and it is as intense as it looks. Smell? Cloves, apples, bananas, flowers, spices - it is not possible to smell without being to compelled to drink immediately. Taste is like the smell but more intense, and the strong carbonation dances on your tongue and adds even more fun. Tartness from the wheat is present but not at all overpowering. I could go on and on about this beer, but I won't because I'd rather run out the market and buy more.

If I had to pick a "favorite" beer, this could easily be the one.

Poured from the standard size bottle into my Weihenstephan weißbier glass.

A - a great dark brown, though not completley translucent (as it is only a bit hazy, like its brother the regular), it has a great fluffy white head that fills the top of the glass; there is a bunch of lacing that only makes the beer look even more delicious. there are some bubbles, but not as much as the original or hefe; far more like a champagne that has sat out for too long. the head also dissapates quite quickly.

S - I smell almost the same scents from the original, very wheaty, and a slight bit of lemon zest, or some kind of spiciness that I am incapable to define; however, it is most certainly different from the clove spicy scent and taste of the hefe.

T - phenomenal! the spice is a bit like the bite from a good ginger ale/beer. the after taste is primarily wheat, which pinches the cheeks when one first drinks; and a bit of yeast which accounts for the musty/'rusic' taste; this is something hard to describe, and I shall leave it to my elder beer compatriots and people with a better vocabulary for their own palate (I only have the experience in expressing the taste in pipe tobacco, although I am young for such a habit!). This is simply an amazing brew: the yeast/malt combination, as I believe, gives a slight nuttiness that is something like an almond and cashew mix with a few pistachios mixed in (though very few!). there is a definite dryness to the beer in the finish and aftertaste which is most admirable IMO, as the alcohol is most subdued.

MF&F - the carbonation makes a crisp clear drinking beverage, that is more than smooth to drink. though not overwhelming, the carbonation is a prominent effect in the finish and tasting process. I find nothing wrong, whatsoever, with this beer's feel or drinkability. it is wholly amazing an to be awed at, admired, copied, and respected.

Appearance- Cloudy, light brown with a thick head that fades but never dissapears.
Smell-Very pleasant with wheat, dark fruits, banana, and some spices.
Taste- The wheat is the first tast that hits you. Esters from the yeast are also very prevalent with banana, dark fruits, caramel/toffee, and a yeasty characteristic.
Mouthfeel- Moderate mouthfeel, very smooth and pleasant. Medium carbonation but it is not overpowering the rest of the experience.
Overall Impression- A very good beer. Good body, not too light but not too heavy. Wonderful flavor profile that makes this a great pairing with dessert.

500ml bottle poured into a Stella challis.

A - Huge, pillowy eggcream white 4-finger head that falls slowly, leaving rings around the glass. Cloudy and dark dried apricot orange.

S - Ripe bananas on the pour. Banana custard in the glass. Bazooka bubblegum. Hints of clove, dense and moist fresh bread, and lightly toasted malt.

T - Whole grain banana bread with a good touch of clove along the sides of the tongue, providing a great balance between sweet and spice. Sweetness of a thick banana and caramel cream with wafers dessert lingers on the finish, but it's not cloying. Spend some time between sips and tastes like peaches and nutmeg appear.

M - Somewhat fizzy, with a smoothness that follows. Good carbonation. Excellent body for the style. Refreshingly snaps off at the swallow. Finish is longer than expected, and a tad dryer than the sweetness of the taste suggests it would be.

D - This is one very delicious dunkel. I'd love to find this on tap someday, or pair it with some grilled brats and sauerkraut. Has all the exceptional quality of its regular brother with a bit more character. I could easily drink several of these and still wish for just one more. Simply outstanding.

I picked up a bottle from Hyvee Wine & Spirits in Pella, IA.

Appearance --- a burnt brown with free flowing carbonation, nice two finger off white/yellow head

Smell --- malty, banana bread, with a little spice

Taste --- malty, wheat, banana bread, yeast, possibly apple, very mild hop flavor

Mouth feel --- bubbly carbonation, soo smooth, light to medium bodied, possible tartness

Overall --- The hefeweizen from Weihenstephaner was the first “good” beer that I had many years ago, so I have been looking forward to giving their other offerings a try for quite some time. All I have to say is wow-wee-wee-wah, I just want more and more of this. I am generally not a fan of wheat beers, but this blew me away. I highly recommend this to anyone that wants try try a great dunkel weizen, or any type of very good beer.

Pours a rich creamy deep brown color. Super fluffy marshmellow sweet tannish head. Very balanced banana, toffee malt sweet smell. Taste was unbelievable. Balanced sublte hops, followed by sweet malty body of bananas, cloves, hints of vanilla, and crisp delicious wheat and malty sweet finish. Make sure you swill the bottom of the bottle to get all the yeasty goodness out. Medium to thick bodied, great finish, malty sweetness throughout. Very delicious by itself or with a meal.

Found this at a small German-themed restaurant/bar in Glendale, AZ. My brother-in-law and I ducked in there while our wives were doing the post-Thanksgiving shipping ritual. This dark wheat beer was presented in a 23oz Weihenstephaner weissbier glass. The beer was a beauty for the eye: cloudy, almost muddy, brown with a ton of little streams of carbonation rushing to the underside of a massive, pillowy, 2" thick off-white head that left gobs of webby lace down the sides of the glass.
The smell was a rich and inviting blend of bready malt, clove, and banana. I was constantly sticking my nose into the glass to enjoy the aromas. The taste was classic German weissbier: banana and cloves abounding atop a solid yeasty malt backbone. The addition of some mild caramel notes enhanced the flavors. The banana taste was strong but not overpowering or causing the overall taste to seem imbalanced. The feel was light-bodied, clean and crisp. Very refreshing.
Drinkability was off the chart. I quickly polished off the first glass and ordered up a second which I savored at a less greedy rate. I just couldn’t help it with the first glass - it was just so damn good. This dunkel wiess is a stellar offering from Brauerei Weihenstephan, to go with their superb hefeweizen.

"The World's Oldest Brewery!" With a slogan like that, you would expect to be getting the most evolved and damn near perfect beer on the planet! and guess what? It is! I was in the mood for something light, something quenching when i picked this up. I did not expect to be blown away with both refreshment and deliciousness.

Poured a dark copper with a lot of yeasty haze. The head was big and is still hanging around. I doubt it's going anywhere either!

Smells of baked goods!! there's yeast and spices, and almost a dried fruitiness to it. Not a strong bouquet, but e very deep one.

The taste is near perfection. It's a heffeweisen so it does have that yeastiness to it. But it is well balanced with the malts and spices. Not much to speak of in the hops other than the fack they were perfectly balanced to keep this beer from being too sweet. Uhh.. I don't know what else to say other than, near perfection!

Glad I picked this one up. This is my second beer from this brewery and it's got me wanting to try more German beers!

My first beer review.

Before anything else, I opened the bottle and smelled the vapours escaping. Just in time, I managed to catch the wonderful bready, yeasty smell that filled the immediate surroundings.

A: As I poured this into a pint glass, I noted the beer's murky brown colour. I also observed the wonderful two and a half fingers of creamy foam that appeared uninterested in dispersing for quite some time.

S: I became immediately aware of the banana smell that filled the air. Every smell produced an aromatic burst of bananas. The yeast still made its presence known, although to a lesser extent. Mixed in were other fruity flavours and just a hint of clove. As the beer warmed, the clove became more apparent. I smelled this one over and over in the process of exhausting it.

T: Did the brewers brew this with bananas? It certainly tasted of them, along with some yeast in the finish. Cloves and other, more vague, fruitiness also attacked my taste buds. There was no mistaking it -- this was delicious and truly true to the style.

M: This appeared to me a very smooth beer. The carbonation did not make itself overly noticeable.

D: I thought this brew to be immensely drinkable.

Wheat beers are not my favorite. I don't dislike them, they're just not one of my favorite styles. Because of that, this beer had a strike against it before I tasted it. BUT, the fact that it won me over so well speaks volumes.

Had this on top at Jacob Wirth's in Boston - served in a nice, large weizen glass.

The color is a murky dark brown with some haze. I wish the head was larger (could have been the bartender's poor pour), but what head was there retained well as I drank it.

I love to smell a serious malt in a weizen style. What a great juxtaposition compared to the heffe's we all know too well in America. Behind the malt there were notes of banana, and a hint of clove.

The taste mirrors the smell, but there are llayers upon layers of flavor - it's one combined flavor balanced very well. Some nuttiness comes through at the end, as well as some fig/rasin. The hops are very far in the back.... Not absent, but agreeably not a big factor.

The Mouthfeel is easy, smooth, and on the thinner side while still feeling creamy. There is a dry finish without a bitter aftertaste.

I don't know if it was the mood I was in, or the day, or the gorgeous sauerbraten I had with it, but this beer hit the spot and just seemed so perfectly balanced and restrained in the right areas.

Can't wait to have another.

The first time I had this beer(years ago) was on a trip around Germany, but at the time I did not know enough to appreciate as much as I do now.
Now I get it whenever I see it for sale.
A....this is what originally made me try it, cloudy reddish brown ith a beautiful fluffy offwhite head
S....very attractive smell of bananas, bread, yeast
T...banana, malty, citrus, yeast...
M...medium heaviness, satisfying like its more than a beer, perhaps a meal full of nutrients.
D...I can drink this any time, any place and it brings me right back to the place that I first had it in a pizza house in Germany, excellent drinkability.

This reminds me of that movie beerfest when the guys brew the secret recipe and take one sip and start crying. The discussion of wanting to put one's dick in it and vice versa is fully realized after the first sip. Clean, flavorful, malty with traces of banana and vanilla, this beer has it all. The first time I tried this was at Schnitzleplatz in Addison, il. I drank a 2 litre "das boot" of it and every drop went down smooth. Those bavarians know their beer, but what else can be expected from the worlds oldest brewery?

Pours with a mammoth head of 5+ fingers in my weizen glass. The color ranges from a light to dark copper in different parts of the glass (different diameters). The first pour is clear and shows quite a bit of bubbles; a later pour is more cloudy but still relatively clear. The tan head is creamy and lends to great lacing and has a good retention.

Aroma is strong and has the characteristic fruity esters (bananas) and phenols (clove), along with bready malts and wheat grain, vanilla, and sweet dark fruits.

Taste is a malty delight - rich, dark breads and caramel sweetness are front and center, with fruity and banana elements, plus spices such as cinnamon and allspice. Bitterness is low.

Mouthfeel is clean and crisp with a high level of carbonation on a medium body. Finish is malty sweet and fruity, but not too sweet - its just right.

Overall a excellent, world class beer and highly recommended!

Now Quaffing: Weihenstephaner Dunkel (draught)

When I first saw the tap handle, I thought it must be a dream. Poured a deep, tawny brown with a nice familiar opaqueness. There was a nice, dense off-white head, which receded leaving minimal traces of lacing. Aroma is dominated by sweetness and accompanied by a pleasant yeast smell. Taste is also sweet, with the malts being the dominant one in this complex relationship. There is a light citrus in the flavor and a perfectly placed crispness from the carbonation. The mouthfeel is medium and incredibly smooth. I don't usually drink wheat beers in session, but this one would be the one I would choose. One of the strongest features is that this beer is very smooth and easy to drink which makes it perfect for people testing the waters of better beer. It also has enough character to please the veteran beer advocates.
