In February 2015, Crooked Stave released Progenitor, a 6.2% ABV dry-hopped Golden Sour Ale. Progenitor NOIR is a little bit of a different take, using dark malts to create a "Dark IPA," for lack of a better term, while still being primary fermented with Crooked Stave’s mixed culture of wild yeast and bacteria.

"Progenitor NOIR arose from the idea that Dark IPA is tasty, so why not a sour version for the darker months we are enjoying." -- Chad Yakobson, Crooked Stave Owner/Head Brewer

While both Progenitor and Progenitor NOIR received ample dry hopping, Progenitor NOIR was concocted to have a fresh, resinous hop bite. Thanks to great hops like Amarillo, Citra and Simcoe, Progenitor NOIR is a hoppy sour worth seeking out fresh to enjoy the full citrusy, resinous goodness!

On tap - Brighton Blvd. taproom

A - Slightly opaque brown with thick white creamy head.

S - There is the expected sour lactic qualities, but the first thing I notice is the uniquely FRESH hoppy aroma. The way the hops presents itself in the aroma is absolutely stunning! I'm blown away.

T - Everything comes off well in this dry sour. Medium tartness, with pleasant hoppy flavors that follow from aroma.

F - Medium body for a dry sour. Creaminess from the head is nice.

O - A unique fantastic beer. The aroma alone earns it the score. A top beer this year so far.

No label information. Progenitor Noir is brewed in the style of an American Wild Ale, dry hopped and available in 12.7 oz. bottles and on limited draft. One-off variant entry in an experimental series.

Poured from a 12.7 oz. bottle to a tulip glass.

(Appearance) Pours a crisp, foamy head of an ecru-tan shade over a dark burgundy brown body with high clarity and light carbonation. Retention is average and lacing is light and patchy. 3.75

(Smell) Malt body of toasted bread and soft pale malts, very little roastiness or earthen tones. Very little perceived sourness as well. Hop profile is aromatically present, with citrus and tropical fruit notes forward and a very light bitterness. Potency is moderate. 3.75

(Taste) Smooth bread malt body with a very light body, a modest drying sourness and very light acidity, and a nice hoppy back end of citrus juice and prickly pine with a light bitterness. Overall, it has less vibrant spots than the ordinary Progenitor, however, I enjoy it more as there are more subtleties to detect and more spots of desirable brightness despite nothing being over-the-top. While the malt profile isn't as intimidating as it may seem, the sour qualities of this beer are equally meek, and the hops on the finish come through nicely. 4

(Mouthfeel) Texture is smooth, clean, lightly tangy, medium dry. Carbonation is light, generating a mild frothiness and a modestly crisp finish. Body is medium for the style, medium+ overall. Balance is nearly even sweet to sour and acidic to hoppy bitter. Alcohol presence is low and there are no off characters. 3.75

(Overall) I found this to be a more enjoyable beer overall than Progenitor standard, as the malt profile did generate some richness without being overly sweet, the bacteria strain used generated an enjoyable, but not overbearing amount of sourness, and the hop profile, despite the enhanced richness of the malt profile, was distinctive and more evident. It's quite good, but I'm still overall not too impressed by this series, and think there are superior beers in Crooked Stave's lineup that integrate quality malt, hops and souring bacterium together much more gracefully. This one comes off a bit light overall. 3.75

not normally a fan of the darker sours but this is rather tasty. progenitor is such a wonderful brew and this really is the dark version. the dry hopping is still there boasting juicy hops over the unmistakably crooked stave beer. makes for a real interesting and flavorful brew. one if the better dark sours but I would still take the golden progenitor over this every day of the week.

Served from 375ml bottle

A — Pours Into the glass with a dark ruby hued black color, almost green around the edges, kind of bizarre looking but it does have an off-white colored head that manages to leave some nice legs along the inside of the glass.

S — Smells of dark dank piney hops, pine, forest floor, peppery vegetal. Balanced with a sharp kick of house yeast and lightly sour funk to round everything out.

T — Tastes like the nose, but its more focused on the dank pine than it is on the dark rich roasted malts, any roasted or charred character is overtaken by the lemony, tart, and sharp yeast presence.

M — Nice and bubbly, almost chewy as it warms.

O — Very nicely done, I give the slight edge to plain Progenitor but both have their places.
