On Independence day, my husband and I figured, what better way to celebrate than with fish and chips and a pint?
After seeing Red Lion Grog House mentioned here, we figured we'd give it a try.
They had 3 Sun King beers on tap - including 1 seasonal. The cook/manager was happy to let us try a sample of the Norwegian Blue. Great beer, complex, but not what we were looking for with food. They also had a couple of Upland on tap and a very good selection of British bottled beers. Other local/regional bottles on the list too. We weren't disappointed with the selection.
Since it had just been 'too long', we both got a pint of Guinness. Hey, we just saw "Historic Pubs of Dublin" and were missing a nicely poured pint!
We both have a thing for Scotch Eggs, basically we're trying to find the best in existence. We split an order of Scotch Eggs, and for my taste these are so far the winner. Nicely seasoned sausage, and some kind of dipping sauce that helped bring out the spice and didn't overwhelm. Went nicely with that pint.
Fish and chips was the priority - so we split an order. Nicely battered cod, and you can get curry dipping sauces (hot or mild) for your fries. We tried both.
The hot curry was a red curry, and a very good one at that. The mild curry was a green curry kind of yogurt based sauce. Mmm...
They have a lot of pub classics on the menu, and though they don't have doner kabobs, they do have a chicken tikka on the menu. Next time we eat here, and oh yes, there will be a next time!, we're trying the curry.
Service was good, we came in at the same time as a table of 7+ (a family celebrating something, as they were taking photos =) ) so we were prepared to relax with our pint and wait for our food. It wasn't a long wait.
There are around 5 flat screens at the bar, one on Sci-Fi (Firefly marathon, yay!), one on Spike, one on soccer, one on baseball and one on CNN. Something for everyone to watch.
We will definitely stop back here again, as we're in Indianapolis fairly often. Might I suggest combining a trip here with a trip to New Day Meadery? It's just a quick walk less than a block from here, and mead and cider fans will find something to please them there =)

The Red Lion Grog House is an excellent pub to hit if you're on the south side of downtown Indy. It's quite cozy (not large at all) and well kept, clean and well lit without being overly bright, it's a nice bit of England for those of us Americans who really don't know what English pubs are like.
Service was excellent, both the server and bartender were polite and prompt. They even had a decent, if not grand, knowledge of the beers they have available.
Excellent fish and chips, truly top notch.
Decent beer selection, with a nice few tap selections and good bottles available. The selection score is a bit higher than the quantity would usually allow, as they have Sun King seasonals on tap, as well as having a few English brews (Oxfordshire) that I've not seen anywhere else.
Had a great time with good food and good beer.
