Perhaps a beer oasis in the Cerveca desert that is PV Mexico. The night we went here there was a wicked storm and the streets were turned into streams, needless too say my wife and I had the place too ourselves. Small English style pub with lots of beer T shirts, Beetle Mania stuff and brewery posters on the wall. No AC and in August down here I was dripping. Just two young folks working but both spoke great English and had a basic understanding of beer and kept the popcorn coming. Half of what I asked for was sold out but even then they had plenty too choose from, 9/5 for this part of the world and would beat most of the bars in my home town of Calgary. Some of the selection was well past its date so choose wisely, I ended up with some Belgians served in the proper glassware. It wasen´t cheap in fact it was as much as I´d pay back home but I had no issues coughing up cash for good beer after so much crappy beer. I was like a kid in a candy store after drinking Carona at my resort for 5 days. I´d go back for sure and if anyone´s going to PV stop in for something other then Mixicrap.

While it may just pass as a 'decent' beer bar in the US as there are no draught beers and the servers can't really tell you much about the beers (at least in English), this pub is a refuge to Beer Geeks visiting Puerto Vallarta.

In a city where Negra Modela is generally the most flavorful brew found at most bars, the Red Pub (just 2 blocks North of the parking Garage on the main drag and then hang a right) boasts an impressive selection of bottles, expecially for Mexico.

Our party (who was jonesing for some Belgian Brews) had Delirium Nocturnom, Duvel, Gouden Carolus, La Chouffe and Maredsous 8 during our stay at the Red Pub.

As if finding those brews in Mexico wasn't amazing enough, a look at the date code provided another suprise (in a good way for the Belgian Strong Dark Ales, at least). All of the Belgian bottles were about 4 years old. Something I wouldn't be excited about if I were drinking a Pale Ale, but age a Maredsous 8 for that length of time and the result was fantastic.

So there we were, in the heart of a tourist town in Mexico, drinking cellared Belgian ales.

A defininte bright spot in the vacation.
