Visited 6/23/2013, 8:00 - 9:30pm
Despite looming dark grey clouds, bellies full of the days food & beer and a strong desire to "just stay-in" at our downtown Denver hotel, my wife and decided to venture out this past Sunday to Hops & Pie. We wanted something casual and "neighborhood", not a "see & be seen" trendy place like we'd visited the previous nights - H&P fit the bill.
We arrived to lighting flashes and rolling thunder and a 15 minute wait for a table, but once seated we were happy with the spot in the front window counter, just beside the main entrance. It's a small but friendly spot, with wooden floors and trim and mostly monochromatic blacks & whites, save for some colorful local artwork on the walls. The space is split in half, with a bar to the left and a quieter dining room (where we were) to the right.
True to the name, the menu features mostly beer and pizza - what else? It didn't take long for us to decide on the June "Pie of the Month" ($21) a thinnish but crispy crust covered in herbed ricotta, wild mushrooms, pickled red onions, fried capers and smoked Scottish salmon, topped with sprouts and shaved cucumber. Neither of us had ever had a pizza quite like it; the flavor is both unforgettable and crave-able! Many other pizza choices cover two pages of the menu, but we were very glad to have chosen this one.
Beers are listed on a single 20-tap page (dated "6/23/2013 2pm", though 2 options had been stamped "KICKED" in red ink) + a hand pull, split about evenly between locals like Odell, Dry Dock, Upslope, Crooked Stave and Avery and some out-of-staters like Firestone Walker, Green Flash, North Coast and Dogfish Head. Lots of bigger beers (7%+), but my mood was for a bit lighter and hoppy - I picked the Strange Brewing "house beer", called "Hops & pIePA". A pint was $5.50. Other pours ranged from $5-7, but quite a few are only 10 oz., due to their higher gravities, so be sure to pay attention to the menu when ordering.
The beer choices being good and the pizza being delicious and filling, our only complaint was service. Although "Jenny" is listed on the receipt, I'm pretty sure we had 4 or 5 servers throughout the hour+ we were seated. Although none were unfriendly, there was a curt efficiency that kept chat to a minimum and kind of made us feel rushed once the pie arrived (yes, it was nearing 9pm - closing time - but the place was still more than half full). Maybe I'm being petty, but service was just OK...
Liked the place overall (again, I'll have dreams about that delicious pizza!) and would be happy to return and recommend it.

Well, this place is a tight and narrow. Reminds me of an old time soda shop or ice cream parlor. Tables on the left and bar on the right. Beer menu is written--or scrawled--on a chalkboard (white on black) in a way that isn't easy on the eyes and difficult to read unless you're right in front of it.
A nice selection of beer, more than your average place. As a beer destination I'd give it a pass, but if you live in the neighborhood you may as well stop by here. Service is 'fast food-esque' and I'm sure the wait staff gets tired of maneuvering among the crowded lane.
I only saw pint glasses being used.
Pizza is quite tasty albeit a bit eclectic. If you just want a slice of pepperoni pie and a beer, I'd think twice.
I'd call this place a neighborhood hang out. It may have some special taps if you can read the board. The space and 'tude just isn't comfortable with me.

This place is tucked into the area between the highlands and Arvada at around 38th and Sheridan. If you don't live around there, it can be a little tricky to get to, but it's not too tough. There's a ton of parking throughout the neighborhoods around it, so that's convenient.
The place itself is pretty small. It does seem like an old soda shop or deli. There are only about 6-7 tables and a bar, so I'd imagine that on a weekend night it probably fills up.
They have roughly about 20 taps including a house "randall-ized" IPA from Strange (very Simcoe heavy, so I didn't like it). They also had some exclusive items I haven't seen elsewhere including a Hungarian oak aged Old Chub and Upslope's Doppelbock. There are additionally about a dozen bombers, although they were all pretty high-end items. Prices were a hair steep, and almost nothing on the menu was under 6.5% ABV. Still, the selection was good.
The pizza was definitely tasty. We split a sausage pan pizza and they smartly warned it takes longer to cook. That's always a good sign since a freshly made one should. I thought it was as good as I could've possibly wanted, although again, not cheap. Plus, it didn't taste like anyone else's pizza, so there's a good reason to come back if you really like it. It wasn't mind blowing, but we scarfed the whole thing pretty quickly.
I didn't really have any service issues, but I will say that the staff was a little disjointed and preoccupied with random other tasks.
Cool place and probably a great hangout for those in the area. Prices are a bit high and the beers could probably use a few more sessionable options...plus I'd imagine they're going to need more room eventually. Maybe not a place I'll trek to often, but if I'm in the general area I'll definitely remember to come back.

I'm starting to think this might be the best beer bar in town. Sure they don't have sixty taps like Falling Rock but the taps they do have are a little more interesting and change often. I had Older Viscosity and Funkwerks Wild Apricot which I haven't seen before on tap. The pizza is very good, I had a slice with ham hock, bacon and jalapeño that was fantastic. Prices are in line with what you'd pay anywhere else, older via was $8 for 10oz which a lot cheaper than a bottle. Overall, I like it a lot.

A - Loved the atmosphere of the place! Primarily because they give you the option of sitting on the bar side or a dining side. Wife and I sat bar side and had a great time chatting with the bartender/waitress.
Q - Everything was very solid. Nothing truly exceptional, but all very good.
S - Everyone was very friendly to us. Nobody went out of their way to provide us with any great service, but again very good.
S - Great selection for a pizza place. Probably, 15-20 taps and an entire binder of bottle options. Primarily local stuff, but as a visitor to Denver, that is exactly what I was looking for out of their selection.
F - Food was very good. One of the better pizza places we've been to in our travels.
Overall, a nice little spot in Denver. We were glad the people at Crooked Stave recommended it to us. We would definitely be regulars here, if we lived in the Denver area.

Great spot. Nice specialty brew on tap. Crazy food. One of the bartenders was cute but in a mood. Other than that, this is a must stop. Local spot, windows, cool pics on the wall, paintings, Irish music. Bartender started to cheer up after an hour. Nice Denver spot.

The guy at Crooked Stave told me about this place. Now I am telling you. STOP HERE! THis place rocks. Great beer selection, including some crooked stave kegs not found elsewhere. But lots of great taps, oh and the pizza is awesome. You know it is like fancier pizza, but not too fancy where you feel like a rich asshole eating it. Its very good and you can buy it by the slice if you just need one between high ABV beers.

This place is a Gem. One of the best beer lists I have ever seen ranging from RR Concecration and Pliny on tap to rare beers from Avery (Uberschwine anyone?) to countless others.
Easily the best beer list I have seen. possibly anywhere.
Pizza was freaking fantastic as well, I thought this was a beer bar with pizza, but no it is a pizza joint with beer. Best crust ever for thin crust pizza and enjoyed a bbq chicken pizza with Jalp, beans and a bunch of other goodies.
This one blew my socks off to say the least. will definitely be coming here again.

Nice well lit place ( soon to grow larger with the addition of the building next door). The service is fast (consideing how packed it can be) and knowledgeable. The quality of the beers is excellent as most are 5 gallon kegs and rotated regularly. The selection is great with 22 taps and about the same number of bottles if not more. The food is good especially the pizza. Very reasonably priced especially for the neighborhood and a good place to visit all around. Now if they would just get rid of the TVs so I can enjoy my beer on Sunday without all the football nuts crowding in!

i was there with my brother. we sat and ordered our beer, that came promptly. The food however took a long time; at least 30 min. from when we ordered. It was not that busy for a lunch and pizza should not take that long to come out.
The beer selection was good and i hope to return to try more taps.
the food was good despite the delay. I would maybe like to see different house pizzas rather then the one special and then a list of choose it yourself options. That being said, good food, good beer, like the atmosphere.
