Pours a dark brown clear brew with virtually no head. What head is there is lacy and tan. There is a light aroma of sweet malts. The flavor is also very sweet and malty with a very light body and low carbonation. The finish is quick and ends with a sweet watery end.

On tap at the brewpub in a sampler glass.

A: dark, jet-black color, no head
S: milder roasted malt nose, on the sweeter side for a stout
T: nice balance of roasted malt and hops but lacked character
M: decent beer but lack character overall for an oatmeal stout

A: The beer is very dark amber in color. It poured with a finger high dark beige head that died down and consistently left a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface.
S: Hints of dark malts and chocolate are present in the nose.
T: The taste has light flavors of semisweet chocolate and hints of cocoa nibs.
M: It feels medium-bodied and very smooth with hints of creaminess on the palate. There is a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is very easy to drink and has a pleasant smoothness.

A: Pours extremely dark amber in color just on the border of black with a finger high tan head with lots of tiny bubbles in it. The beer has good head retention and some lacing on the glass.

S: This beer has aromas of toasted malts, dark malts, and a hint of chocolate.

T: The flavor of this beer is very light but includes semi-sweet chocolate and cocoa nibs.

M: Medium bodied and very smooth with light carbonation and hints of creaminess.

O: Very drinkable but the flavors were a little on the light side for my palate, overall a pleasant experience.

Bottle poured into a tulip

A: Pours very dark, almost black. It's not quite as viscous as heavier stouts but is still reasonably thick. Head is essentially nonexistent with the exception of a handful of tan bubbles on the surface.

S: Aroma is faint with dark roasted malt, a bit of chocolate and a bit of smokiness, not strong by any means.

T/M: It's lowly carbonated with an initial malt sweetness, hints of chocolate and a faint bitterness possibly from residual hoppiness. Oats don't lend nearly as smooth a texture as it wants to be but it definitely has an impact on the low carbonation.

A decent effort all around but not groundbreaking.

Had this with dinner a few nights ago at LBC.

Came to me with a small, foamy, chocolate brown head. Laced very well. Smelled of the traditional stout coffee and chocolate aromas, more coffee than chocolate on the nose.

The taste was pretty complex. I remember coffee and burnt malts off the bat. Then came a bit of sweetness, and chocolate undertones. A little bit of a hop profile right at the end, but finished with the coffee and burnt flavors coming back. Very little carbonation in this one. Felt almost milky in your mouth, a little more than stouts I have had.

Overall, I really liked this one. Next time I go to LBC I'll probably try a few others, but probably come back to this one in the end.

Poured a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass.
A- The head was thick and lasting with bold lacing. The color is a dark brown.
S- The aroma was understated. I think that this is about 5 degs too cool. I picked up some roasted malts.
T- The taste was good. I like oatmeal stouts and this is a good example. The smooth taste of roasted malt and the creamy edge of oats are blended well.
M- There was a nice thick mouthfeel. Perhaps a bit too much carbonation, but otherwise good.
O- This is a very enjoyable stout. I will drink this again, perhaps at a higher temp.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass

Pours up black with no light shining through. A one inch tan head on top, which dissipates to a skim.

Aroma is bitter, a bit of smoke notes, coffee, chocolate, and cream.

Taste is mildly sweet at first before it is taken over by chocolate notes, then coffee, then a bit of earthy hops in the finish with a lingering roast bitterness.

Mouthfeel is super smooth and creamy, medium body.

Overall I like this a lot. My second beer from them and it's another good one. I will probably get this again.

Poured an excellent deep brown/black, with excellent head and some very nice lacing. Nice deep roasted scent with a nice oatmeal sweetness in the nose. Excellent roasted grain flavors, with a slight chocolate flavor and a wonderful oatmeal thickness and sweetness. Goes down extremely smooth. This is an excellent oatmeal stout. (On tap at LBC)

Had on tap....

A- Poured a deep dark brown almost black color. Half finger tan head comes and goes rather quickly. Some light spots of lacing on the sides of the glass.

S- Roasted malts and a light coffee aroma make up most of the nose. Some light anise in the middle lingers for a bit before a smoked meat aroma hints toward the ending. The aroma although sounds kind of weird actually works well together.

T- Roasted malts in the front of the beer are nice. A nice cold coffee tastes stands with this one. The middle has a darker fruit and anise flavor that balances the front roasted part. Smokey flavors in the ending of this beer tie everything together just like in the aroma.

M- Medium light mouthfeel. Carbonation a little on the weak side. Roasted malts left on the palate. A roasted smokey flavor is left in the aftertaste. Alcohol has a light drying effect on the palate. This seemed a little watery at times in the mouth. Flavors were balanced pretty well for the most part.

D- This was a good drinking stout. Nothing really standout about but a good drinking beer. I would have a couple of these before going onto something else. First beer I have had from this brewery and to be honest I was a little impressed with them.

Thanks to thirdeye11 for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours a dark brown color with a very small tan head. The aroma is pretty heavy on the coffee but also has some chocolate and roasted malt notes. The flavor is coffee, chocolate, roasted malt and tobacco. Medium-thick, slightly creamy mouthfeel and low carbonation.

Aroma - Sweet and roasty with just a hint of alcohol in the nose too

Appearance - Dark brown with just a thin creamy head

Taste - Fruity sweet with a decent level of roasted flavor. Just a basic smooth oatmeal stout.

Notes - Unfortunately I found the mouthfeel a little thin for what I consider is appropriate for the style

Bottle thanks to heliosphann.

Pours nearly black with one finger of light tan head.

Scent of anise, chocolate, roasted malts and a hint of smoke. A good scent, but it could stand to be a bit more robust.

Taste of roasted malts, anise, a hint of chocolate, some smoke, and some ink. As with the scent, there is something about this that is slightly off, but it is still a solid beer.

Mouthfeel is is medium bodied and oily with good carbonation.

Poured from a bottle to a glass. It poured a thick black. Produced a very short tan head that faded fast to a thin lacing around the glass. This stout smells very smooth, creamy, with a hint of alcohol. This does not remind me of an oatmeal stout. It lacks the smooth mouthfeel. More of a bitter taste and watery mouthfeel.

Thanks to Heliosphann for this 12 oz bottle. My tour of Indiana beer continues...

A: The oatmeal stout is appropriately black, a moonless midnight color that sits still in the glass. Atop it, a white head stands in stark contrast to the dark body.

S: The nose has a lactic aroma, smooth and creamy. The stout side isn't a pushover though, adding roasted coffee and chocolate just behind the lactose and oatmeal.

T: Funny, this doesn't seem like an oatmeal stout. The stout part, check. But the lactic, oatmeal smoothness? Not so much. There is, however, a bit of a smoky flavor running alongside the stout. The stout aspect, disregarding the smoke, seems thin.

M: The mouthfeel never quite gets going. THe smoothness of the oatmeal never really comes through. Instead a thin stout body and hint of smoke struggles to make up for its absence.

D: I don't have a problem with the drinkability; I'd just like a little more oatmeal stout.

i dont get this one. i work at a liquor store in the same town this beer is brewed and more than once, people have returned a five pack stating 'there's something not quite right about this beer'. claiming on tap is delicious. im not sure if they don't have the bottling process down yet or it's just bad. well, we had an indiana beer tasting the other night which i was very excited for, FFF, backroad, oaken barrel, and of course, the lafayette brewing company. this was a pour out. usually there's one guy in the room claiming 'i don't know about you guys, but i like it.' not on this night. i heard claims of dirty river water and smells of sour malt. not good. i enjoy the brew co. there food is great and i know from experience that the beer has potential. so im at a loss on this bad boy.

Thanks to Beerman207 for this offering. Pour is from the bottle to a snifter and from notes taken on 12/10/2009.

Appearance: Pour is a dark brown, near black; no head whatsoever, just a thin, light tan ring around the surface; spotty and loose oily lacing here and there; body is entirely opaque.

Smell: Deep roasted malts; very oaty and raw; nice coffee-esque scents.

Taste: Pretty thin, actually; fair amounts of that raw oatiness; a little bit of a bitter roastiness. Overall I'm pretty much unimpressed.

Mouthfeel: Nearly flat, which isn't necessarily bad in some offerings, but in this one it's just bad; body is isn't really "thin," per se, but it's not really thick like I'd expect from a nice stout; a light coating, but overall the finish is strangely clean.

Drinkability: Low, not really a decent offering or something I would ever seek out again. I guess they can't all be winners.
