A nice little place tucked away from the from the normal college atmosphere bars that litter Iowa City. We went there because they had the Left Hand Milk Stout on tap and found some other good choices. They get in some good beer from time to time. Though not a great spot for craft beer lovers, they offer a better selection than most downtown Iowa City bars, and the atmosphere is 100% better. I would recommend to anyone that wanted to escape the downtown frat scene of Iowa City.
Nice location close to other great Iowa City beer bars like The Sanctuary (best in town) and Orchard Green that has some great tap offerings as well.

The Hawkeye Hideaway is, literally, a hideaway relative to the crowded, noisy, kiddie bar scene that dominated the downtown Iowa City area until recently. It is an excellent alternative across the parking lot from The Vine and Old Capitol Brew Works for beer lovers and penny pinchers looking for a chill atmosphere and good selection of beers on tap.
Most of the time I walk in and there are only a handful of regulars hanging at the bar or playing the games in the back, including a couple staff members who have the night off. The huge, antique wooden bar is, I think, the same one used when the place was known as Fitzpatrick's. Along with the stools at the bar, there is a line of booths in the center of the building and a number of booths and high tables along the walls. On the north end, toward the bathrooms and kitchen, is a coin-operated (I think) pool table and a couple arcade games. When the weather is warm, a wide patio with iron deck tables and chairs (the kind you can rock and lean back in) is open on the west side of the building, next to a little creek. The trees and fence are lined with white party lights, and the patio is an excellent place to sit on a perfect spring evening.
The beers on tap are always rotating, and, besides the usual macro swill, are pretty choice. When I was there last night the tap selection was Miller Lite, Left Hand Milk Stout, Fat Tire, Peace Tree Double IPA, Guinness, Pilsner Urquell, Sea Dog Blue Paw Wild Blueberry Wheat Ale, Coors Light, John's Generation White Ale, Goose Island Seasonal (which is currently Mild Winter), Stella Artois, and Bud Light. I had a pint of Milk Stout and the bartender gave me a generous sample of Peace Tree Double IPA when I asked about it. The Hideaway has a good selection of bottles, too, but I do not recall seeing any kind of lineup. Then again, I have always had draft beer there.
The Hawkeye Hideaway hosted the 2010 Iowa City Brew Festival, which I heard was really awesome. I hope the location at a local, IC-owned bar had a little to do with that because it is a nice establishment. The food is pretty good, too. However, the vegetarian offerings are only a grilled Portobello mushroom sandwich and an "ultimate" grilled cheese sandwich I could put to shame in my own kitchen. Since the lack of veggie options is not something most beer drinkers need to worry about, my friends tell me the burgers there are good.
